TEST Team Note - 06/09/09 02:46 AM

Test Team A.K.A. Regulator Dogs:

When providing your feedback by Private Message, please make sure you send it to me and cc Renee or send to Renee and copy me or just send it to both of us...no one else

Renee is actually collating all the feedback for my reference

Now get busy with it and send in that feedback. I already appreciate what has been sent in...very insightful

Thanks again for playing an important role in our knife development

+1. If the Regulator tests run as long as the Killa Zilla tests are supposed to run, I hope we see one or two more Scrap Yard releases between now and the time the Regulators show up in the store.

So, the test team has been testing for a little while now. Since none of you tsters can talk at this time, can Dan maybe chime in and let us non-test-teamers have some insight into how things are going for the Regulator in terms of feedback? Something maybe a little more than "good". (I know I am setting myself up on this one...)

I've not done anything too extravagant with my Regulator, but I'd like to think I put it through the paces of how *I* would use a knife that size.

Can't wait until I can share the results, as I've got lots to say about the knife.... guess you will all have to wait six months

I was on the original "HEADHUNTERS" team in nam....we didn't get that name for nothing.... To receive "credit" for a kill , you had to produce 1 of 3 items....documents...weapons...or "parts". This was the problem, if all that was left was ..say a left ear... my CO wouldn't count that as a kill. So a dufflebag full of heads got his attention..and our unit name. We were THE scariest unit to the enemy. We had heads on pole surrounding our hooch area. The smell was....pungent to say the least. We fought on the enemies level...and lower(more). Won't send photos...but my knives were my weapons of choice. Tools of the trade , weapons of war , sinse the beginning of time , knive are our most primitive tool.

Archangel: If (make that WHEN) you wright your book, please please please let us here know. It's one thing to occupy one's mind with fictional trivia, quite another to fill it with fact! I spent 20 years in the Air Force, never went to war, but DID get involved in some scarry (international reprecussions) stuff working at the 5AF CAF in japan. And as YOU know all to well, the truth can be unbelievable. Thank you for your willingness to BE THERE AND DO THAT. Re: TEST Team Note - 06/27/09 05:33 PM

Light in the hand is more a question of balance than actual weight. The M9LE, despite being a longer knife with more steel, feels lighter in the hand than an NMSFNO, for example.

Re: TEST Team Note - 06/30/09 09:12 PM

There isn't a whole lot the Test Team can tell us about the Regulator except whether they like the knife or not. We already know it can chop concrete blocks, and dig out wood with the point. And those who have handled it like the feel of it. It's a nice Bowie. I can tell you that. Some don't care for the flex in the quillion, but I think it does its job of keeping one's fingers off the edge. Personally, I just don't have a single suggested change for Dan on this one. BTW: the famed SOG Bowie is about as thick.

Re: TEST Team Note - 07/02/09 06:41 PM

I meant top of my list of favorite knives... Not best all around or most practical or most efficient chopper, just my favorite - that's not just a question of performance but the way the knife looks and feels. The sar4 might be a great performer but I know just looking at it that it doesn't speak to me

I handled a LOT of various busse models at BLADE and not one of them put a grin on my face like the regulator did when I picked it up.

Actually not so much - most of the other knives that are near the top of that list aren't really bowies. Just this one particular Bowie that I like so much.

Some other contenders, off the top of my head...

BM-E
Uncle Mojo / Mofo
M9LE
Battle Rat
Camp Tramp

I haven't handled any of those except the M9LE, but from the appearance and reports I've read on their feel in hand and performance, I am drawn to those blades a LOT - they can't OFFICIALLY take a place on that list until I've gotten my grubby little hands on them, but those are some blades I really really dig.

The Regulator I HAVE handled, and I suspect its place will remain near the top of that list for quite some time. Especially considering the cost of some of those others on the second hand market

Re: TEST Team Note - 07/02/09 08:29 PM

The Bowie , whether Regulator....or other/most Busse Family of blades incorporate the basic spirit of the American Bowie fighting knife...While some models are better for military or "fighting" than others...the style is still present and accounted for. Overall , other mgf's bowie designs(which I have not been a fan of)...have left a durability/strength issue for me when I deployed their use for various tasks...until Busse/SwampRat/ and the ScrapYard were produced. In my "circle" of brothers , we used KaBar,Gerber , Buck , Randall...and others which we found lacked...durability , dependability and overall strength to hold up under our expectations.!!! Now not to say they couldn't cut....they just couldn't hold up. Some of us REALLY USED our blades...so broken tips , edges ,hilts and handles don't CUT it...hence the search , not just for a PERFECT knife , just a good , useful tool that would perform and hold up...when we stake our lives on our tools. The Busse Family of blades WILL do that. So I will bet MY life and ALL that depend on me , on my ScrapYards.

There are Times(night,storms..)...Places(the Jungle, mountains,etc..) and Things(my Knife, poncho liner, bible, etc) that bring a certain comfort to me. My knife gives me most confidence and comfort for the most part....and my DF,DM and SoD , will make that a done deal.

Ya...remind me to never piss you off...

I (of course) WAY prefer satin blades anyway. I do thank Dan for bringing us "most" knives with a satin option.

Unfortunately, historically there have been VERY FEW satin SR-101 blades - whether differentially heat treated or not.

The M9LE was one of the first in MANY years.

I WISH they always provided satin options (at reasonable up-charges), but historically, they have not - especially in SR-101.

Anyway, as much as satin looks WAY nicer to me just in general, Differentially heat-treated SR-101 is a BIG extra bonus in looks!!!

Re: TEST Team Note - 07/08/09 06:52 AM

The times I've honestly put either SR101 , or SR77 to the "fire" , they have BOTH did OUTSTANDING in performance , durability and execution. I do know that I've sharpened very little on the SR101....and used it heavily. My SR77 has withstood every task and I've touched it up more frequently. Given all scenarios, the SoD would be my general combat/utlity/survival blade.

Re: TEST Team Note - 07/08/09 07:02 AM

The DF would be my choice over the Regulator...tried by fire...lots of fire.

Re: TEST Team Note - 07/25/09 03:30 PM

There was some question from the guys who picked theirs up at Blade what the wording of the non-disclosure was. Here's the wording from what was emailed to me...

"I agree to not sell, trade or put any pictures or reviews, either on the forums or in private e-mails, of any of the Scrap Yard Regulator Bowie Test Team Edition blades for a period of 6 months from the time of purchase. All reviews are to be sent directly to Scrap Yard by email to patti@scrapyardknives.com and renee@scrapyardknives.com respectively."

Re: TEST Team Note - 09/07/09 08:03 AM

I've been marveling at how far Scrap Yard has come while still staying true to its roots in the last few posts, so why stop now?

Back in the day, I commented that the Blue Grass Bowie (V72) from Busse (http://homepage.mac.com/zombiekiller/badmojo/variants2.html) was really sweet on a wishlist post or something. What a joy to come back to probably the greatest knife design IMO from Scrap Yard since the Dogfather. Looks even better than the dream V72!

I'm super pumped about the Regulator and cannot wait for this to be released, so people, PLEASE, don't buy 'em all up when it comes out before I can snag one! I look forward to hearing more about it when the public commenting floodgates open... or if there are any leaks, cough cough

Re: TEST Team Note - 09/07/09 08:26 AM

By the way, for the Test Team (and any other interested party), how would a black on black, non-logo'd Regulator be as a companion to the Dogfather? Would they ever be carried together in your opinion?

Or does one having a logo and the other not having a logo not really bother anyone else? (Probably my only gripe with the Dogfather-- the Scrap Yard logo is so good that it would've been perfect had it been applied)

The Test Team is for the Regulator by Scrap Yard and a kukri by Busse Combat. Best I can tell all you had to do was purchase one at the time they were offered and sign an agreement (which has been stated in this thread). The purchase window has passed so no new test teamers can be added.

The agreement was six months - that puts Blade East purchasers at six months right around December. I have a minty fresh regulator but am not sure I want to let it go. I guess it depends on what changes, if any, they make with the release version... and whether the release version is available in Bama Clay

Re: TEST Team Note - 10/26/09 03:39 AM

I only got the one, and plan on using it. I've carried it on a couple hikes but never needed to use it and the folks I went hiking with weren't down with sitting around while I beat on the thing. I haven't had an opportunity to put it through it's paces, and that's my own fault. I'm not worried about the Scrap Yard team not getting my notes, I'm sure what my limisted experience has to say is not going to be very helpful anyway. I was just excited for the opportunity to get a pretty sweet new blade.

Can I ask why "December"?

Re: TEST Team Note - 10/26/09 03:46 AM

December is six months from the initial release at BLADE Atlanta, so that's when the first group of "test team" members' agreements will be expiring.

I sent my report in to Dan I think less than a month after getting the knife. I've used it since then but my initial impressions haven't changed.

I've actually had such a constant rotation of new steel coming in that I've not used the regulator as much as I would have liked to. I really dig the knife but I think the fact that I'm not allowed to show pictures has kept me from taking it along as much as I would otherwise. But since getting the Regulator, including stuff I got at the same time at BLADE, in "large knife" sizes, I've gotten a SoD, NMSFNO, Killa Zilla, Desert Dogfather, Mr. Mojo, and the FSH... all of those have gotten their turns to be taken out and used. And now with the possibility of trying to snag a SAR8 and a Bushwhacker, who knows when the regulator will be going out again...

This stuff is addicting I need to camp more often

I believe it goes without saying, at least for the majority of folks in here, that if it is pointy, sharp and built by Scrap Yard then we will like it. Even if improvements are suggested by the test team, it's still a Scrap Yard knife. Nothing wrong with stating the obvious.

I'd still like to get a green one one of these days.

The green one IS nice!

+100 that is the color that drew me to this blade, unfortunately the second test team didn't get this color option. I really really really really hope this is offered as a production option.

Re: TEST Team Note - 11/06/09 04:58 AM

I guess the green was the non-black one from BLADE? (color blind)

If so, I'll trade you my green one if you want it, Seth... although I can't guarantee what condition it will be in

I made the dumb mistake of keeping the black mint and beating on the other.

Re: TEST Team Note - 11/06/09 05:12 AM

That may be a deal, I can't guarantee the condition of my black/tan Regulator either. Renee did say something about me sending it back if I wanted We need to talk after 6months.

Re: TEST Team Note - 11/08/09 01:23 AM

I can't wait to see what gets posted after the 6 months are up or for when the next gen. Regs to come out.
That would be too cool if the green handle was an option. I know I'd get at least one. If there's any sort of a discount, maybe a couple.

Re: TEST Team Note - 11/08/09 02:37 AM

I am suppose to be picking up a leather sheath for mine on Monday.
Wednesday I am leaving in the afternoon to go on a 4 day hunting trip.
Want to take it with me and if I have time around camp to do some more "testing"

Re: TEST Team Note - 11/08/09 04:40 AM

I'd like to see some videos come out of all of this.

Re: TEST Team Note - 11/18/09 01:29 AM

I wonder if anyone had planned on sending one over to knife tests after the wait period is up. It would be funny as hell watching his beat on it with a 3 lb. hammer for a few days.

Ok, I really would like the paisley one. OOOOOooops, I meant Blue.

What is your favorite color? Blue. ...NO yel......

the yard is clammering non stop for some orange C. Pretty please?

I'd be willing to buy an orange Reg. handle and install it myself.

There literally isn't a knife in orange black that I can live without. I'm looking to sell a kidney for the Bushwacker Mistress.

Yeah,I sold my 9mm to get a BWM(pumpkin/tanker gray)can't wait to get that babby.

Re: TEST Team Note - 11/27/09 03:53 AM

The BWM would do more damage than a 9mm at close range anyway.

Recon, I do agree!

Re: TEST Team Note - 12/05/09 11:53 PM

Hopefully it wasn't a good 9mm.

Re: TEST Team Note - 12/05/09 11:53 PM

Or better yet, I hope it was a good trade.

Re: TEST Team Note - 12/08/09 01:17 AM

I am a newbie here! How does the test team work?
Posted By: Wiggitty

Re: TEST Team Note - 12/08/09 02:16 AM

Dan released a trial blade and in return for getting to it first, the test team agreed to be mum about it and provide feedback only to SY. the quiet period ended recently, hence lots of chatter.

I'd like to be on a Scrap Yard Test team but I'd likely get too excited about the knife and share info I shouldn't

Keep an eye out on the forum and watch for the announcement. I believe you also have to already own Busse steel to be considered.

I think it's best to wait until Dan is back on-line before we let this thread disappear.
