SOD or SR CW

SOD or SR CW - 06/16/09 02:39 AM

I need a great all around 7" plus blade. I've been eyeing the SOD and the Chopweiler. Which of these two would be recommended by you? Or maybe another Bussekin in this length range? Remember, an all around blade.

Thanks gents, Mark

I have both, and I'm partial to the Chopweiler.

They both have their strengths. The SOD is lighter, tougher, and less expensive. The Chopweiler has slightly better edge holding and is still extremely tough. Either one will serve you well for an all around big blade. Both will chop very well for 7.5" blades.

Re: SOD or SR CW - 06/16/09 02:54 AM

Chopweiler has the superior steel, SOD has the superior handle for chopping - IMHO, of course.

I have an unused SoD, and am deciding whether to hang onto it, or let my last remaining piece of SR-77 go. SR-101 is just such an awesome steel that it's quickly becoming my favorite, even over INFI (when you factor in the price difference)

Re: SOD or SR CW - 06/16/09 02:59 AM

I would pick the CW in this case. An all around blade means it needs to do small cuts AND chop big! With that said, I have 2 SODs and I love them both! You can't go wrong with any of these blades.

by ALL means, GET RID OF YOUR SR77 steel. You dont need it anymore. Ill take the SOD

Re: SOD or SR CW - 06/16/09 04:36 AM

I don't have either of those knives, so my opinion on this particular topic has no basis in reality, except I've got experience with both steels. I think either would serve you well.

Re: SOD or SR CW - 06/16/09 04:51 AM

I don't think you could go wrong with either blade. I would wonder if you would really see any inferiority in either knife. I think both would be a great option!

Re: SOD or SR CW - 06/16/09 04:56 AM

There is no bad choice. Both are outstanding. I am going to get both, and I did the same discussion and research that you seem to have in process. The SOD is legendary around these parts, for good reason.

Re: SOD or SR CW - 06/16/09 05:08 AM

I have a SOD LE and love it. The SOD LE was my second SY knife, the first was a SOD CG that a friend talked me out of.

I also have a SR CW that I just got not too long back but have not had a chance to take out to use. I do think it has a slightly better balance for me. I do feel the Res C handle is a better choice for ease on the hand when chopping.

Re: SOD or SR CW - 06/16/09 05:13 AM

I have a CG SOD and like it, don't get me wrong. But I bought it because it was a more affordable and more accessible substitute for the Chopweiler.

I was able to buy the SOD when it was in the SYKCO store. But if I were to chose now, I'd go with the Chopweiler.

I'll get a CW one day though, no worries, and as the Hogs say, "no regrets!"

Re: SOD or SR CW - 06/16/09 05:20 AM

Another option, with the handle and blade MATERIALS that are best on both knives, is the REGULATOR... but you'll have to be patient to score that one

Re: SOD or SR CW - 06/16/09 05:23 AM

You won't go wrong with either. I have all three that have been mentioned (Tramp, CW, SoD) and the Tramp is my current user of choice.

Re: SOD or SR CW - 06/16/09 06:32 AM

Appreciate the great responses. Now I've got to get three knives. For now though, I think it will be the Chopweiler.

Thank you all, Mark

Re: SOD or SR CW - 06/16/09 08:49 AM

My Chopweiler is the only knife that I have ever got in a certain size and been so happy with it that I have not wanted a different blade in the same size....if that makes sense !!!!!

Check out the wear on the coating, the blade has still never been sharpened and will still shave hair !!!!!!

Beating it good !

Re: SOD or SR CW - 06/16/09 12:37 PM

If you have both...put'em to the test. I have a Ratweiler that I love , a MiniMojo that will be at my side in SAR missions....but when I deploy to the great sandbox across the water , my SoD will be going postal with me..... Yeah no doubt the SR101 is great...but pound for pound , dollar for dollar , Scrapyard doesn't just bark.....it eats the competition.

I haven't handled the chopweiler, but I LOVE my SOD! It's a practically a mini DF, how cool is that.

And my from experience SR-77, will hold almost a good of an edge as INFI after a lot of chopping.

Re: SOD or SR CW - 06/16/09 09:19 PM

One of the best things about going to a show like Blade or Knob Creek is that you can pick things up before deciding whether or not to buy them. Personally, I hated the handle shape of the Chopweiler -- the way that the top falls as it approaches the blade simply didn't feel right in my hand. Some people love CW handles the way I love RMD handles, but my vote is for the SoD, or if you're willing to spend a bit more, then "Go FSH".

I vote if you can get an orginal Ratwiler get one but I would take the SOD over the Chopwiler, it has amore forgiving handle.

Really? As good as SR101 held an edge in the Waki video?

In waki the video, they chop with the front of the blade and slice the paper near the choil to the middle of the blade.

Next time we have a chopfest, I'll make a video (with SOD or DF) of me going through some sections of a 2x4 and slicing some paper.

Re: SOD or SR CW - 06/16/09 10:05 PM

I didn't say it holds the "same" edge as infi/sr-101, I said "almost" . From what I understand/experience, INFI/SR-101 will take a super scary-hair popping edge, where as SR-77 will take a scary shaving sharp, which is good enough for me as I rarely pop hair in real use. They might hold an edge a little longer, but slicing paper like in the waki video after chopping like that should be no problem, especially if you use the untouched part of the edge and slice towards the dull part, the sharp part + the momentum should carry it through the rest of the paper. Anyways, I will make a video next time to back up what I said.

And one more thing, I don't want people to think I prefer one steel over the other, I just think SR-77 gets kind of a bad rep for it edge holding abilities when in my actual experience it does a good job. A usable edge doesn't necessarily need to be scary sharp.

Re: SOD or SR CW - 06/16/09 10:40 PM

I would love to get a camp tramp to go with my battle rat. Don't get me wrong I love my SOD but I much prefer the SR101 over S7 and with the yard using it more and more it is going to be hard for me to look back.

it would be more money but have you ever thought of the busse NMSFNO, its a great chopper but its up to you if its worth all the extra money

Re: SOD or SR CW - 06/16/09 10:58 PM

i dont think SR-77 holds an edge like INFI.

between the SOD & CW i go with the CW and its diff. heat treated, better edge holding 52100 and plus i like micarta more than res-c and i think its one of the sexiest looking knives ever with more curves than kim kardashian.

I wish they would have chopped for 50 swings and then cut the paper all in one frame of filming. Not that I don't believe what I was shown.

I guess what I'm trying to say is not once when I use my SOD, do I feel I need SR-101 or INFI to finish the job. Even after bashing it on 2x4, trees, etc, it would still shave. And even if I used it to the point where it couldn't shave, the edge geometry would still be good for chopping.

I don't want to turn this into another SR-77 vs. SR-101/INFI thread, I think all 3 steels are more then adequate. And as long as Scrap Yard keeps to their motto, I could care less about which 3 steel they use.

Re: SOD or SR CW - 06/17/09 01:27 AM

I think we should do another survey...just a first second third choice of busse steels and tell people to take price into account. I think 101 would win.

Re: SOD or SR CW - 06/17/09 01:53 AM

I don't have either But have the Tramp.

I like Res C...a lot! More comfortable and you can still abuse the handles like crazy.

Great sized blade either way, can do it all...

I agree aboutthe 77 not having the hair popping ability. However, it does get a nice edge that is useful. Don't get me wrong, I love my SOD LE.

My rule of thumb is if its busse kin it will get the job done.

Both are superb camp knives. The CW is great, the SOD legendary!

I have both knives and I'm happy with both of them. You can't go wrong with either one - I think it is just more a matter of personal taste in blades.
