DFLE vs Watermelon

DFLE vs Watermelon - 07/20/09 01:24 PM

I have this watermelon that I needed to cut up so I figured the DFLE would be a good knife to use since I didn't have a kitchen knife that big. It did a real good job, even though there are probaby better kitchen knives more suitable for the job. The real thick blade really did a great job of splitting the melon open while cutting it. Overall its a great watermelon cutting knife....would definitly use it again on a large melon.

Guess I'll have to get a watermelon now that you tempted me. Question,,,will citrus ruin the black coating on SYK's? Some co.'s the black coating will be ruined by citrus..

Re: DFLE vs Watermelon - 07/20/09 03:38 PM

What wonderful and refreshing pics. For some reason, my kids don't like watermelon, so I seldom buy a whole one any more. That DFLE is not only a great melon knife, it's my favorite big knife of all. And watermelon is my favorite melon. I may just buy me a small one today and cut it up with my DFLE. It's too hot to chop wood.

Hmmm, and a seedless melon at that. Makes me want to run out to a roadside stand and get a nice blackdiamond and chill it in some ice. Thanks for the encouragement.

YUMMY!
Great pic. Too bad watermelons are getting as expensive as good knives. They are excellent targets for practicing the 800 meter head shots.

Great knife to cut a watermelon with. I do have some kitchen knives big enough to do the job, but i would love to pull out a SYK at the next BBQ to cut some melons.

How about cutting up the watermelon with the Waki? That'd scare some folks at the Bar-B-Q

I went through the farmers market in South Georgia last week. The growing season is winding down. I bought 5 big melons for $1.00 each.

+1 that reminds me of the old John Belushi SNL skit.

That's one thing I HATE about living in metro Atlanta - what they claim are "farmers markets" are nothing of the sort. Most of the produce is imported, and very little actually comes from local sources. I miss living in the country and being able to walk up to a stand and buy food from the guy who grew it. There's a certain brilliant simplicity to that which is missing in mega-ultra-markets.

You should try living where I live- closest thing to a farmers market is the Publix produce section.

You know what I miss? Buying fruit and veggies from a guy on the side of the road with a truck.

No parking lots, no shopping carts, just a guy and a truck full of melons, 'maters, corn, peppers...

15, 20 bucks and you had a couple weeks worth of simple, nutritious food, grown right in your own neighborhood.

Got those around just outside the city. Also got plenty of Farmers Markets in the city. We are very lucky.

Re: DFLE vs Watermelon - 07/21/09 05:02 AM

The farmers market I went to is in Cordele,Ga which is the self proclaimed"watermelon capital of the world". There were 4 drive through sheds about as long as a football field. The farmers had their kids and helpers running out to your truck with samples. Find something you like pay em and they load it up for you! Good times!!!!

This is the melon knife I usually use. It has a 14" blade. I got it at Goodwill for $.80. (Got the Case ones for that too)
