Giveaways

Giveaways - 08/08/09 01:11 PM

In all the excitement of new releases we Moderators overlooked the fact that a couple of folks were actually breaking the rules by using giveaways to obtain knives for sheath making. This violates Rule number 4 as posted by ColdOne. I would appreciate those involved to discontinue the practice of giveaways, as the rules apply to ALL of us. Thank you. Tom

Re: Giveaways - 08/08/09 02:16 PM

I'm a little confused about why giveaways are against the rules... I can see it being banned for commercial interests, as it amounts to free advertising, but what about Dogs wanting to help out other members of the Yard? I don't get why that would go against the rules.

Like, just after BLADE, I offered a random drawing to let a fellow Dog get my extra SOD at cost. Technically, you could probably call that a raffle or something - was that against the rules? And if so, why?

Thanks for any clarification.

Thanks for any clarification.

You don't think a sheath maker offering labor for goods is commercial or advertising? I sure do.

Their are plenty of other places to advertise and do business and the boss has said he doesn't want it here, nor do many of us.

Generous dawgs make the Yard a great place but it can easily be done in private, not "advertising" in public threads.

Re-read my post - I completely agree with the rule being applied to the sheath maker giveaways. My first sentence was to acknowledge that I understand the ban on commercial interests.

I was asking for clarification of the rule for NON commercial interests.

Re: Giveaways - 08/08/09 03:14 PM

Okay. I think one reason for no public giveaways is it can get out of hand. Deals fall through, people feel left out, and it can change things/mood/the feel of the Yard. That's just my opinion.

The Yard has lasted this long, the great way it is for a reason, and the way Dan, Coldone and Private Klink keep it going works.

I personally don't want it to be like other places, it's special, has it's own ways/rules and feel.

The people here are kind, smart and fun, they know their blades or learn to know them and soliciting in any form will change that. Again just my opinion.

I'm not really sure what the situation is because I haven't been keeping up with the "giveaways". All I know is that public transactions other than direct sales of Scrap Yard products to its customers is prohibited on this forum. By transactions I mean the transfer by any means of products or services between or among forum members.

So what about proxys, then? That involves a transfer of goods between two people, and yet seems to be allowed.

That's exactly why I'm asking for clarification.

Re: Giveaways - 08/08/09 04:30 PM

Here is an idea, since Scrapyard is a stand alone comunity (Busse and Swamp Rat each have 2 forums) I am not saying put up a for sale thread but maybe an available knife thread so for example if I bought 2 S5s and realize I don't need 2 I can put a post up that says I have an extra S5 then an interested party can pm me or if I am looking for say a DogFather I can post that I would like a Dog Father and anyone who might have an extra can pm me.... just a thought. Don't have to list prices and whatnot, if i want to make a profit on my blade I will sell it on the exchange or ebay but maybe I just want to help a fella dog out. You can keep it tacked at the top, make the rules simple, no prices listed and ask the Dogs that if they are looking to turn a profit on their blades please sell them in the appropriate sites, it could be a thread called "Help a Dog out" or something like that.

Yeah, I saw that going on...some of these guys even take over other threads to do so. It is nice to be friendly, but the rules are the rules.

I surely like this idea. You could even stick all the proxy stuff in there too. I think it would be a great thread and also help out the Busse Boyz. I can see all points including MMs for sure . I understand why he wants clarification. This really is a great place or I would have been outta here long ago . What ever the rules are I will surely follow- but by making POSITIVE " suggestions" perhaps we can help to make the yard even better . I think Dan would appreciate that. Make it yet another " win-win situation" . -Thanks

Re: Giveaways - 08/09/09 04:25 PM

In some ways I think we all keep an eye out for what other people want/need in their knife buying. I have bought, sold and discussed privately with folks a # of times. When I was crying about not being able to get a Waki and that I would look for a Battle Rat instead, someone PM'ed me and we made that happen. I think done subtle enough, it doesn't cause tensions and hopefully not provoke problems.

I really like how friendly it is here and don't want to lose that. I think most folks can sense what a politically leftie I am and even though I'm probably more in the minority here- I feel great chatting with folks about all this great steel, the outdoors and our families.

Man,I have rambled...what are we talking about again?

Whether any of us agree, or disagree... is really not an issue.... the owner of this forum, has set rules, and expects that we abide by them... as an owner of several websites, and forums, I can appreciate that sentiment, especially as a business owner, and as a user of other's business facilities... the customer is always right?... to a point... and with the modern world... the gap is very narrow indeed.... it is what it is....

I also like the idea. But I suspect it's too close to a WTB/WTS thread to suit Dan and the mods. Besides, there are better ways to handle that IMO, not the least of which is via the Bussekin Exchange.

Right. One of the very reasons it was created. So we could trade among ourselves, while being on a separate forum, free of charge.

I agree with what Which Dawg says above.

I don't think it's happened yet and don't think it would in the near future, but in the middle distance as more and more people join the 'Yard I could see it happening.

There's always BF (which I'd guess most of us here belong to) and the Bussekin Exchange mail list/group that Andy created for that sort of thing, so its not like not having it here will stop people from doing it if they want, but not having it here will may well help preserve the 'Yard sense of community, which is just outstanding and imo well worth protecting.

Just to chime in on this, however most points have already been brought up.

The biggest point is that it is Dan's wishes that there are no giveaways or exchange threads here for the reasons already posted. That being said, we put the link up to Andy's Busse Kin Exchange to fill that gap.

Other great locations to try and fill those annoying gaps in your Scrapper set is Blade Forums dedicated exchange forum and by searching for Busse on ebay.

Re: Giveaways - 08/11/09 02:55 AM

MM - Sorry, I missed your question about proxying. I think that it might start getting out of hand shortly. It had been that folks would ask in the Death Chat or send a PM to a buddy here to ask a favor. We may end up having to shut down the proxy request threads if they get out of hand.

Re: Giveaways - 08/12/09 06:04 AM

Well, I gotta agree with our beloved Mods on this one.

Giveaways have no place in public on the yard because:

1) They have the potential to cause anger between members of the pack. Not saying it would happen, just that it could happen, as I have seen on other boards.

2) It has no bearing at all on Dans' main goal; designing and selling knives.

The big dog is extremely lenient in what we are allowed to post about, IMHO. He lets us post comparisons with other companys' knives, which says a lot about Dan, as far as I'm concerned. I even think that we help him in designing his knives, by the threads that we develop, showing how we use our Scrappers, how we modify them, and by our comments of the pluses and minuses of each model. After all, it's all about continuing sales, when you get right down to it.

As for starting posts looking for proxys; again, I think that should be done in private. I've had a few people proxy for me, but you'll never find any posts/threads of me asking for one in public. Personally, I think something like that doesn't need to be advertised... but that's just me. Like all of us, I've made some good friends on this forum; they've helped me at times, and I try to reciprocate the kindness they've shown to me, in whatever way I can.

When I think of the Yard, I think of how I would spend a vacation. Usually, myself and a few good friends will go out to a secluded hunting cabin in the woods in the fall, and have a really good time. We don't do a lot other than hunt, share stories, and a lot of laughs... but I treasure every single one of those trips.

When I think of other forums, I think of a crowded touristy beach in some large city. Millions of people, thousands of things to see and do....but it's too crowded, to many people that are rude and self-absorbed,...... too much stress.

I like the yard just the way it is, and I pray it never changes.

Thanks Sumo; I've always been a quality over quantity kinda guy.

That's why I like the Yard so much. we aren't just members of a forum; we treat each other with respect, dignity, friendship, and dare I say it, extended family in some cases.

Everyone on this board cares for each other in ways I haven't seen much elsewhere. Places like the Yard should be treasured, because sadly, they are slowly disappearing, what with the attitudes of a lot of the new generation, IMHO.

Nicely stated.

I have established the rules so all have the same guidelines and everyone can engage in the same fashion.

I really do understand the request of some people and the needs of others but not on this forum. There are plenty of places/forums that fit those request and needs.

I thank each of the Dogs and the Moderators for making this one of the best places to share the love and knowledge of steel.

Long Live The Brotherhood of the Yard
