it would be cool to actually do it - 08/12/09 01:42 AM

im not sure whose sig has this written but ive seen one that reads "my knife can chop yours in half"
i dont know if its possible but it certainly wouldnt surprise me if a SY knife (any really) could be filmed or photographed chopping something like a gerber or cold steel into pieces!!

lol im a poor college student and im not really willing to do this to my scrapper but im sure someone out there might be crazy enough to do it!

No knife on knife action but you get the idea.

Noss showed interest in the S5LE, I don't know if he'll do a destruction test on it.

That would be fascamo's sig.

I haven't done it either, but it could be done given a knife of sufficient hardness, toughness, and strength cutting on one with properties that are significantly lower than the previous (mild steel, etc.) or by capitalizing on a flaw or weakness in the blade or steel being chopped - though not with my knife. Noss has even done this (hammered through mild steel) on his knife test site.

That would be Paul ( fastcamo) that has that in his sig line . BTW- he DOES have a chopper that just might cut many knives in half . As for Noss- he is here on the board as he is a big Bussekin fan I am quite sure .

Hehehehehe... Pvt.Snowballz, I hear you on the poor college student. That's me too, but somehow I manage to find money for knives!

My snicker at the beginning of my post is because my brother and I have actually tried something like this! Not full force chopping blade to blade, but enough to leave some notches on our blades. We did it with our "beater" knives way back when. His knife was the Buck Nighthawk and mine was a Cold Steel SRK (Carbon V). Since we beat the snot out of these (we were teenagers at the time), we decided to see whose knife was stronger by chopping the edges together. Whichever had a bigger notch lost. I don't remember whose "won," but we still have the two knives. My SRK is now a full flat grind, but I think remnants of the notch are there. My brother's Nighthawk still has the notch. I'll say, that Nighthawk can take a beating! He stuck it into a tree stump, pounded on the butt of it with a sledgehammer, and then pounded on the top and bottom of the handle to "shimmy" it loose! Anyway, I would never do blade to blade chopping with any Scrappers. Anyone else up for it?

Re: it would be cool to actually do it - 08/12/09 06:07 AM

Dark Ops Knives are made from a proprietary hybrid alloy of Chromium, Cobalt, Tungsten, Vanadium, and Molybdenum with surgical grade stainless steel! CTV2 offers both strength and edge holding ability that is unrivaled! Zone selective cryogenic hardening allows for medical grade edge sharpness while avoiding the brittleness of high Rockwell hardness...

In other words a market ploy.
Posted By: MustardMan

Re: it would be cool to actually do it - 08/12/09 06:09 AM

The description of the steel sounds like no more of a marketing ploy than INFI or SR-101.

The designs of the knives, on the other hand....

Awesome.

It seems like Dark Ops set its price point high in order to capture the pricey armchair ninja market. The saying, "You get what you pay for." but in reverse? I am sure most who have them probably love them and truly appreciate the designs.

OFF TOPIC:

What's funny is seeing the look on the arrogant kid's face after having his >$50K late model Corvette get smoked in the 1/4 by a not-so-rich 18-year-old kid from the mill in a <$20K (total) used Civic at the drag strip, on the interstate, and on the street.

Now let's try to find some other stereotype to pick on while we're at it. maybe teachers, gov't workers, college kids, farmers, attorneys, plumbers, accountants, etc.

well honestly if the dorkops are machines instead of pressed like that then i can see it....also almost every steel alloy on the market has a mixture of those... also i cant really say i have ever in my life or in a lab seen surgical stainless steel.... seen plenty of stainless steel there but nothing surgical.... i think surgical is more to the type of instriment then the metal

Knifetests / Noss is why I am here. I love the Reeve Sebenza and heard that some of fixed blades were being discontinued. Was able to pick a Project1 NIB at $100 under cost. Always loved the looks of that knife. Felt pretty nice in the hand and heard decent things about it from those who had one. Thought it would make a good user... until I later saw the test. Call it fate, but it led me here. Now I'm gettin' me some REAL STEEL !

I'm not slinging mud at sterotypes, I'm slinging mud at wasting money. There's a big difference between a Civic that has some quality performance parts put on it, and is a mean performer on the track, and a Civic with a two foot tall stainless steel wing that weighs a hundred pounds, and detracts from performance, or putting vinyl stickers of high performance racing parts on your car, while not actually USING those parts anywhere on it.

It's the car equivalent of mall ninja, and whether you think it's a stupid sterotype or not, I think it's just stupid. Just like I think it's stupid to spend 200 bucks on that dork ops crap. It's a free country, and I'm just as free to think people are wasting their money as they are to waste it.

It's no different than the kids when I was in high school, who would buy a beat up old Nova and put "summit racing" stickers and a fake plastic hood scoop on their cars because they thought it made them look cool. At least back then the goofy useless accessories were cheap.

I can only speak for myself, but I prefer a sleeper over something that is all show and no go. That goes for the cars that I drive and the knives that I carry. I would rather put my money toward performance rather than a bunch of useless doohickies.

Dark OOPS stuff cracks me up. I remember looking at one and laughing to myself because the seller was trying to lay the sales pitch on thick. No thank you.

DB, awesome pics and test.

And to the car debate, funny is all I have to say. A friend of mine in hs had a couple of cars that were sleepers--one was an old Malibu that looked like a granny car but would tear it up on the street and track. Classic looks on the faces of the rich kids and their store bought cars when they got dusted!

I apologize. We are from different places. I'm just not into ranting about every little thing that some do. It's a pretty laid back attitude here and not very 'in your face' in person. The internet and typed words 'seem' very 'in your face' even when not meant that way.
