Some Good News On The Family Front - 09/03/09 04:08 AM

Dogs:

For some of you that were around and remember when we went through that terrible ordeal with my oldest daughter getting type 1 diabetes and alomost losing her we had some good news today.

Things for the past 11 months have steadily gotten worse and managing the sugar has been rough at best. So we went to the Michigan Childrens Hospital for an all-day set of meetings today to get her a new doctor as well as get her into a program similar to what we had in Houston. To be honest we were hoping for the best but did not really think anything could be done and we would all just have to live with it.

The most amazing and wonderful thing took place. After about four hours of working through the data they figured out why she has been having so much trouble. With some slight corrections they think she will get off this wild roller coaster ride of trying to manage her sugar. This will result in her having a much more normal and healthy life.

Patti and I are completely wiped out from all the meetings …in a good way, and we thank God for the accomplishment today.

I thought I would share this good news with you because it was your prayers, thoughts and support that helped us get through that initial and very desperate time

Long Live The Brotherhood Of The Yard

My Mom is type 2, and she sees a diabetes specialist. She recommended the book below to her. My Mom has since switched to a Vegan diet, and her sugar is much more controlled, and she's losing weight and getting healthier. I don't know if any info in it would relate to type 1, but I thought you might want to check it out:

Re: Some Good News On The Family Front - 09/03/09 07:42 AM

Thats great news Dan! Type 1 diabetes seems like alot at first but after some time it becomes alot eaiser to control. I was diagnosed with Type 1 less then 2 years ago I was 23 at the time and it dosent run in my family and I was in good shape im 6'2 180Lbs. But all in all im happy to be alive considering I was in a coma on life support for a week. Honestly it's not as bad as everyone put's it out to be I can do the same things I did before I was diagnosed (besides binge drinking <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />).. the only limits you have are the ones you make for yourself. Im sure your daughter will live a long and fulfilling life and I wish her and your family the best of luck.

When this was first happening I told Patty how lucky you guys were for insulin. Before they developed that, a diagnosis of diabetes was a death sentence.

Controlling the disease is still not a walk in the park. I’m glad you have a better handle on it.

Re: Some Good News On The Family Front - 09/03/09 05:41 PM

I'm glad you found a place that was able to help her. Being Type 1 myself I have struggled with the ups and downs and I know how hard it can be. Diabetes is a life changer and Type 1 which you have no way of preventing can be very frustrating. I do not know how old your daughter is but there are many great social-networking sites out there. http://tudiabetes.com/ has been very helpful to me, it has other people just like me sharing experiences and ideas on diabetes.

From my experiences Doctors can be very frustrating and not have all the answers. If you every have any questions I am always willing to talk.

I don't know of much that is more difficult to deal with than when the health of your children is at risk. It helps though when you can find doctors that can help like what you have described. I wish your family and daughter God speed in finding the proper solutions to improve her health.

Its great to hear that your daughter's illness can be helped in such a way as to drastically improve her quality of life... So many times news is not always pleasant in this world, so take a breath, thank your God for the blessing, and feel relieved both for her sake, and your own as parents and relatives...

Kindly thoughts and and many prayers from my family to yours...

Dogs:

Your postings have really touch Patti and I and I have shared them with Theresa and she is completely blown away with your comments of caring. When you are 16 and a normal kid (i.e. not crazy or nuts about the sugar)it just gets old not feeling good. You should see her today...wow what a difference.

I find it intersting how many Dogs have type 1 or 2. It did Theresa a world of good to hear your words of encouragement.

All I can say it is so good to have each of you as friends

Thanks again

Re: Some Good News On The Family Front - 09/04/09 09:21 PM

Dan, Patt & co.

I had some stomach issues when I was 17 that landed me in the hospital, lost some intestine, extended stay at home, etc. It was then that I got to see what true friendship was. The friends that came around when I wasn't a joy to be around... the ones that didn't have cash, but would doodle something in class and bring it over as a gift... those meant more to me than anything. And now, 36 and looking back, I still have those friends.

Your daughter is likely learning a LOT of life lessons very early. Although the journey isn't a good one, many of these lessons and the growth of character that come with it, are invaluable.

Not that she should be lucky to be going through it, but man, once you (and your friends and family) come out the other side, you can't get that experience any other way.

Anyhow, again, I'm glad she's doing better.

Re: Some Good News On The Family Front - 09/05/09 03:01 AM

Dan,

I feel for your daughter and your family. I have struggled with type I diabetes for much of my life. It takes quite some time to figure it out and we are all different. However, tell your daughter that once she gets it figured out, it will no longer be a debilitation. Instead it becomes an inconvenience. It took me 4 years to figure mine out. Now I am normal other than a few expensive obsessions.

Thinking of you folks,

Scott

Re: Some Good News On The Family Front - 09/07/09 05:09 AM

One of my best friends is insulin dependent, 3 shots min a day. We have hiked and paddled some of the roughest country you can imagine and although I have had to shove a few life savers down his big mouth over the years believe me he has not missed out on much.

The wife served as a clinic person for the local elementary school for 6-7 years. Her main thing was watching over diabetic children while they were at school. We get to see these kids regularly at our dog park too. It is amazing how far things have come.

Now that the doctors have apparently discovered how to maintain your child on an even keel I think you will see your lives return to something approaching the norm. Discovering the right methods and schedule seems to be the major battle.

Here's hoping all the worst is behind you.

Re: Some Good News On The Family Front - 09/07/09 07:51 AM

I was first a member here back in late 2006, so I remember the worry in the air during I think the time of the Dogfather. Now that I'm back, I'm very sorry to hear that things continued to be difficult after that initial period of diagnosis. I am so glad to hear that things have reached a more established resolution and I wish you, Dan, and Patti and the rest of the family all the best. Here's to things getting better and better!

For those of you who wonder how I can say this after all this time and such a long absence, let me just say that even with those difficulties, Dan and Patti took care of my order-- and all the orders-- and were exceedingly gracious to boot. That made an incredible impression on me. While I'm not the biggest or a regular buyer of knives in general, my loyalty is with Scrap Yard-- the people here really are the best. (Having the top quality-to-price ratio doesn't hurt either.) God bless
