154CM SkeleScrapper?

154CM SkeleScrapper? - 10/16/09 01:54 AM

I know that we are all champing at the bit for the next great offering from the yard. I am.

I also know that with the way everything is going these days, there are more than a few wallets out there that need a little bit of time to cool down.

SO...

Is there any interest out there in a killer little blade from the Yard?

I am thinking 154CM, satin finish, 3/16ths or so thick, 3 inchish blade length, and SANS scales or resiprene c?

I would LOVE to carry a SY blade everyday, but sometimes a Scrapper 5 or larger is just a little bit too much for a typical days activities.

What do YOU think??

I'll take one....oh I don't count. It is an interesting idea that I have not given much consideration to. It will be good to hear what the yard thinks

I was just kind of thinking that it was an untapped niche for the Yard.

The 154CM with the Ohio magic would be the PERFECT steel for it.

Now youre talkin. As a mechanic my 3 1/2 inch folder is as important as my right hand. I use it for evberything from opening parts boxes to cutting zip ties, stripping wire, prying open access tabs, cutting belts and hoses etc, you name it,it comes out of my pocket 10 times a day. A 3 1/2 inch,3/16 thick,7/8 inch deep, full grind, half serrated blade of 154CM with a 4 1/2 inch skeletonized handle in a fixed blade version is what ive been looking for for years. A lightweight, strong, edge holding,un-intimidating tool hanging on my belt right next to my LED maglite is what the best mechanic in New England needs. WOOF!

Re: 154CM SkeleScrapper? - 10/16/09 02:45 AM

After EDCing a bad warden for a year, I would jump all over a 154cm in the 3" range. I like the 154cm on my Emerson's.

Almost rather see it with the res-c, but res-c with the same width and profile as a micarta GW or AD, keep the S5 monster truck texture though.

Serrations?

Choil?

Re: 154CM SkeleScrapper? - 10/16/09 03:25 AM

While I personally prefer folders to skellys, I know that quite a few dogs have been asking for a SY Skeleton handled knife for a long time. And 154CM is just about ideal for a small knife carried close to the body. I think it would be great in a survival kit, too. Just don't carry it to a government school, even locked in your car trunk. The idiots running the schools nowadays will freak out and make a federal case out of it.

ed: Oh, I almost forgot. Put a bottle opener on it.

They would consider it a weapon. Might as well just go ahead and carry a Nuclear Argonne and an M-16.

Re: 154CM SkeleScrapper? - 10/16/09 03:36 AM

Iowa law says nothing about that...so long as it isnt 5 inches or longer blade length.

I carried a knife to college and back in high school too, but it is pretty rural and that was 9 years or so ago.

Exactly! If Dan's memory is that short, maybe we need to "hound him" more. I agree a bottle opener would be cool. Something about the size of a Rat Shaker or Warden.

Re: 154CM SkeleScrapper? - 10/16/09 04:07 AM

Iowa sounds enlightened. We used to carry pocket knives to school all the time in Georgia. We didn't go around stabbing each other. Now, in GA, any knife with a blade of 2" or more is prohibited even in a school zone. I guess I should throw my Rat Trap out the window every time I drive through one. Stupid laws passed by stupid people. Anyway, I hope Dan makes that neck knife for those who like them.

Yeah, a 3 1/2 inch skelly, with a couple of holes pre drilled to further lighten the load and also allow EASY attachment of your own handle material! I've got some wild cherry My wife's dad cut in his saw mill before he died, been drying out for about 5 year now. That would be a FANTISTIC way to memorialize him (in my and my wife's eyes). Oh, Our previous pastor also made a pulpit and alter benches out of the same wood. Brought tears to all our eyes, Fuzzy was a pretty good fella and I will always miss him.

I'd buy one or two. A Scrap Yard necker would be cool. A bottle opener on the handle would be nice also. I think 154CM is perfect for such a knife. Could also offer them polished as LE's and in coated CG versions. Bring em on!

Re: 154CM SkeleScrapper? - 10/16/09 07:31 PM

I've got a CRKT Krein Dogfish and like it, it's super light and handy! A Yard skele around 3" blade in 3/16" stock 154CM but with a strong spear point tip, no choil and a finger guard like the Dogfish would be awesome! If Dan made a factory kydex (necker) sheath available with it, Christmas would come early!

I'd suggest three versions- FG = fugly (non coated, non satin finished , a sort of project version!) CG and LE.

However a Yard skele in kydex rules!

I'm in on this, nix on the bottle opener though. You don't need one of those if its uncoated, the spine or pommel will do just fine for that. Less details = cheaper to make.

I would like to have a pocket/edc sized knife that I could have on me everyday. The SR Vex was pretty tempting but not quite what I'm wanting. I may get my sister a Izula at some point. Seems like something in that size would work for me.

Re: 154CM SkeleScrapper? - 10/16/09 11:41 PM

I am thinking something just a tad smaller than a HEST.

Really simple design, easy kydex sheath to go in the front pocket as a EDC.

I am not much for wearing knives around my neck, but I like neckers. Go figure.

Re: 154CM SkeleScrapper? - 10/16/09 11:46 PM

Sounds real good. Great piggyback it with a larger blade. Make sure the handle design allows for a para wrap. Flat grind and even thinner, say 5/32. My Vex has become an all time favorite and it is mighty thin.

Re: 154CM SkeleScrapper? - 10/17/09 03:58 AM

I only own one serrated knife on which I'm actually happy to have the serrations - a Spyderco Rescue. Of course, that's a super-specialty blade designed for cutting ropes and seatbelt webbing (and in my case carried for rock climbing). A sheepsfoot blade is about the only place serrations make sense to me.

I even use a plain edge on bread...a sharp one works just fine.

I would say no to serrations, yucky. I would however like to see a stub for a window breaker and a place for a web-cutter even if I have to do that one myself. If the price it right I would not mind doing some self-mods. With my 6month old strapped in a strapped in seat etc. I am getting anxious about when, not if really, I live in Houston, we get into a not so easy to walk away from crash. Probably stupid but that is the way my mind is working right now.

Re: 154CM SkeleScrapper? - 10/17/09 02:04 PM

Small necker/pocket carry sounds great to me. I am with those who would prefer it plain. Bottle tops are twist off these days and serrations just get in my way. I think it would be easy to make it so people could add their own handles. Scrap Yard might increase revenue on it by offering a version with handles and or offering handle materials. If it is easy to work with and modify I am thinking many people will buy several.

I really don't like any of the "neck knives" I have bought, but for those who like them, I think they will sell well. The MPLE, HCLE and RC HEST are as small as I want in a fixed blade. My Rat Trap will still see much more use than any of them.

I'm with you, Vic. Generally speaking, I draw the line on fixed blade knives at blade lengths of 4" or greater, although I've been known to shrink that spec a little from time to time. On the other hand, there's a substantial number of folks who just love their Izulas and BK-11s and Thru Hikers and Hartsooks and Kaalas and the like. And while a 154CM SkeleScrapper doesn't much appeal to me either, I doubt I could pass one up if Dan sold it for Scrap Yard pricing.

Same here. I gave away my Swamp Warden as a gift, and the owner loves it. A SY neck knife would make a great stocking stuffer, especially if it came with a kydex sheath.

Re: 154CM SkeleScrapper? - 10/17/09 04:51 PM

I would hesitate in speculating the 'serial number' on the S5 Le equates in any way to the number actually produced. Seeing as the numbers were not imposed on the knives in any numerical order except no duplicates. I would guess that many/most of the <101 knives were filled but over that is likely anyone's guess.

For the Skelescrapper I would like to see the knife be <4" and have a thin kydex or like materiel that is shaped to fit like a pocket pistol holster. Neck carry will likely not get much use by me but a small, thin belt or pocket holster will likely make it a most used knife.

I may be a dummy....but why not?

you need carbon to initiate the sparks...154cm is a stainless steel...lacking carbon to initiate the sparks.

I just had to try this.

Didnt have any trouble sparking a ferro rod with Benchmade 154CM in a old 705?

Seemed to work fine.

I would be in for a 3-3.5 inch skeleton necker. I like the idea of a bottle opener, but I like the idea of a kydex sheath with it better.

Re: 154CM SkeleScrapper? - 10/19/09 04:51 PM

I'm not a big skelly fan, as I've said before. However, I'd be interested in sub-Warden-sized neckers in 154CM. Dan would also probably do well with larger blades in either 154CM or SR101 (Swamp Wardens sold like hotcakes -- Eric never received enough to satisfy demand).

However, I'd only be interested in a necker if it didn't make a big bulge where the handle hits my belly; possibly something like to a Bearcub HACK size. I'd also want stain resistant steel because sweat is corrosive and a necker stays in contact with your skin. I already own a couple carbon steel neckers -- one that's compact/practical and one shaped like a curved straight-razor (I like it a lot -- the design is unusual and the handle has a very comfortable "organic" shape, but unfortunately, it's large enough that I'm obviously carrying something under my shirt).

That being said, I still think that Scrap Yard's Res-C handles are big part of why I like them, so I'd prefer that the handles be at least Res-C "dipped" to provide a more comfortable, positive grip.

Thanks for the feedback, its nice to know someone does not thing I am crazy for that. The Wife was finally shown my 888 Cop Tool and SOG Powerlock strap cutter and how to use them. She was 'fine' with them since I paid for them out of my personal account.

The idea of a Res-C dipped handle is great.

I'm not sure you can "dip" in the Res-C without filling the room with fumes and possibly killing someone. Perhaps just a fully coated knife would suffice so Dan could keep the costs down on this one and avoid the need for a new handle mold. The texturing alone would be enough to help hold a paracord wrap if someone wanted to add one later.

triton its cool you are in Iowa too. I'v seen several people with knife clips hanging out of their pockets in public school. I don't know if they are allowed but they do it none the less. The Laws are pretty lax here just no fixed blade over 5 inches in public.

Actually the law says no knife with a blade 5 inches or longer is to be concealed on or about the person. Doesnt say anything about fixed blades or open carry. It is also legal while hunting or fishing.

Concealed blades of 5 to 8 inches carry lesser penalty than 8 inches and larger. (simple vs serious misdimenor maybe?)

All moot to me...i have a carry permit, and in Iowa that covers all dangerous weapons (daggers, tasers, etc.).

Even better, huh?

Re: 154CM SkeleScrapper? - 10/22/09 05:04 AM

They've knocked the concealed length down to 3" blades here. What really sucks is that it wasn't too long ago you could carry up to a 4.5".
I was getting a pretty hard look from a state trooper today at lunch in the Arby's. I had the TT Reg. on my belt.

It will be good to hear what the yard thinks

idk about that, for a necker if you get the overall length too long itll kinda ruin the point of it. Id rather have a full grip with a bit of a shorter blade than more blade and less handle (to keep OAL down)

Yeah, on 2nd thought Youse guys probably right. 1/8 on something this small would work out fine. And I DO agree with the longer handle part. Go ahead and make it 3 inches.
Posted By: tripton

Re: 154CM SkeleScrapper? - 12/09/09 02:30 PM

No way. 1/8th inch aint no Scrap Yard blade.

We need 3/16ths to keep it Scrap Yard tough.

More importantly though, I am not sure how comfortable it would be to hold onto with a superskinny 1/8th inch handle.

Lets go 3/16ths inch, with a full flat blade grind.

Hows that?

Re: 154CM SkeleScrapper? - 12/09/09 02:43 PM

Well Trip, that was my first thought. Then I remembered my Assault Shaker it's short handle. If I had MY preference, it would be 3/16 blade 3 1/4 inches long(nothing smaller than 3 inch edge with 3 3/4 to 4 inch handle and yes, full flat ground.

Re: 154CM SkeleScrapper? - 12/09/09 04:26 PM

My vote is for a scaled down SAR4 style with 3 1/4 inch blade. We should compromise on a thickness of 5/32. Blade material should be CPM154 or D2. For me that would be a great utility knife. I also like the idea of screw holes to allow folks to add their own scales, if desired. What do you guys think about that?

I dont think we will be seeing any cpm154 out of Bussekin. They have done a few runs out of 154cm...and it is awesome.

Re: 154CM SkeleScrapper? - 12/09/09 06:44 PM

A knife that I could carry in my pocket, piggyback, or wear iwb. A skel knife with a 2 1/2" convex edge & 3 1/2"-3 3/4" handle that could be wrapped with paracord or attach slabs . The dipped handle is a great idea or maybe slabs of Res-C with a liner attached that can be bolted to the handle could be offered as an option.
Is it here yet???

And it's a lot longer than a necker.

1/8 is where it's at! Rat Cutlery has the same warranty as Scrap Yard, and the RC-3 is 1/8 of an inch thick too.

Make a knife that actually cuts, and I'll be all over it.

Yeah, and I love, LOVE my RATs.

But...the Bird dog has a big comfortable handle, and the RC3 does too. I am afraid that if a skeleton handle is too skinny, it would be like gripping the business end of a butter knife.

The Izula is thicker than 1/8, and is a great compromise between toughness and slice ability. Cuts like a demon.

Still, it is much, much more comfortable with a paracord wrap.

I'll just come out and say it...I want a SY "necker" that is very, very similar to an Izula in Bussekin 154CM. That would be the end all hard use EDC work knife for me.
