Zombie Eradication Kit (ZEK) - 10/28/09 03:19 AM

[Linked Image from i577.photobucket.com]

I was inspired by some other Scrapyard Dogs and put together my own ZEK (Zombie Eradication Kit).

Remigton 700 CDL in .257 Weatherby(awesome all-around cartridge for PNW Zombies)
Rock River LAR-8 .308 Win (Reach out and touch some Zombie)
Remington R-25 .243 Win MI BUIS
Rock River AR-15 Varmint Trijicon ACOG(Excellent CQB w/ mid range capabilities)
Smith and Wesson 460V .460 Mag (360 grainers can take out an elephant zombie)
Smith and Wesson 340PD .357 Mag
NMSFNO (up close and personal Zombie Stabber)
S5LE (really up close and personal Zombie Stabber and skinner)
Filson Tin Cloth Bush Hat folded Quasi-Aussie (not as cool one from the zombie movie, but it works)

I'm gonna make my way east to your place if the zombies attack.

Again I've gotta get my ZEK together. I think I could last longer than most.

Love the ZEK! And gotta love the Big wheel

Re: Zombie Eradication Kit (ZEK) - 10/28/09 04:15 AM

Thanks for the comments.I was inspired by other Dogs here.

I have other handguns, but for a ZEK it's hard to beat the reliability, versatility (The 460V can shoot.45 Long colt, 454 Casull, .460 mag and modified .410 shotshells)and raw power of a wheel gun. Sure they have their drawbacks (capacity, reloading time, recoil) but if I need to deliver some plumbum quickly The AR's are will suffice.

The picture is marginal, but I think it gets the point across: Zombies beware.

nice set-up

i really wanted a CDL...but settled for a .308 x-bolt instead
Posted By: kuanomar

Re: Zombie Eradication Kit (ZEK) - 10/28/09 04:22 AM

Those X-bolts are at the top of my wish list. I'd like one in my second favorite cartridge the .270 WSM. I chose that 700CDL because of the cartridge.

Re: Zombie Eradication Kit (ZEK) - 10/28/09 04:27 AM

i really wanted a model 7 CDL in .308 but i was able to make a nice trade on this one

I had a ruger 25-06..rechambered to 257wtby...i was going to use it for pronghorn...when i was going out to wyoming shooting prairie dogs...but the fella that owned the ranch we were going to passed away

so i sold it w/o ever shooting it

Re: Zombie Eradication Kit (ZEK) - 10/28/09 04:44 AM

Vance,

You should try and find another .257 Weatherby Magnum (Weatherby Vanguards are a good value). They work well for animals bigger than pronghorn. I used mine to take a buck this year and it worked perfectly. Granted it was a shorter range kill, but the bullet did it's job with flying colors. It's flat trajectory and low-recoil help even novice hunters shoot with confidence. Zeroed at 225 yards lets you hold right on to a coyote from zero to about 350 yards. This greatly increases longer range hits on fast moving animals when you don't have time to use a laser range finder. The lack of recoil also mitigates the flinch factor associated with the big magnums, yet you get adequate energy for deer (or zombie) size game out to 500+ yards. Again, shot placement is paramount on longer shots, but the low recoil and flat trajectory are in your favor.

Then again, you have a .308. If you know the bullet drop, that cartridge can do anything a .257 WM can do and more.

Nothing wrong with having both.

Magnum22,

I take it you have a .22 WMR based on your screen name. Don't underestimate the .22 Mag especially in the Hornady 30gr V-Max bullets going 2200 fps. I have a Ruger 10/22M with a magnum research carbon fiber barrel. I guarantee it would stop or slow down an intruder. Put 10 of those puppies in a zombie and it'll give you an excellent advantage over the undead. Then you can use your scrapyard to finish them off.

This is the ultimate .22 WMR anti zombie gun(Grendel P-30). 30 rounds of pure zombie melon exploding goodness. Super reliable and 10 mags should get you through most scrapes with your brain intact.

How does the 257 perform on deer?
Posted By: kuanomar

Re: Zombie Eradication Kit (ZEK) - 10/28/09 07:15 AM

Coyotebc,

In my experience, the .257 Weatherby Magnum with the 110 grain nosler works great. I hit a buck this year that was quartering towards me. I hit him square in the shoulder and he went down like he was hit by lightning. The bullet broke through the shoulder and came to rest just below the skin on the opposite side. Anything from the .243 on up would have done the job in a humane manner. Some may argue that a bigger bullet with greater frontal area will do better on big game. However, there is always a consquence to bigger fast moving bullets. You can't argue with physics.

As always,if using an appropriate caliber and bullet within their limitations, placement is the key to a clean kill. What a .257 Weatherby Mag does is give you a flat-shooting, light-kicking, hard hitting round adequate for medium size game. I think that is is ideal for the animals I hunt.

A bonus is that is doubles as an excellent predator round. If you hand load, (which I don't) You can push the light bullets close to 4,000 fps. I used the 110's earlier this year to hit a coyote at 350 yards (ranged by laser). Not super far by any means, but with a flat shooter like the .257 WM, it was easier than trying to calculate the drop on a slower .30 caliber.

So, to answer your question, in my limited experience, the .257 weatherby magnum gets the job done on deer... and probably zombies.

If anyone else in The Yard wants to chime in on the .257 weatherby on deer, please share.

Re: Zombie Eradication Kit (ZEK) - 10/28/09 08:37 AM

honestly for zombies i think .22 LR would be your best bet overall. its cheap, easy to find, lightweight (so you can carry TONS) and does a good job at penetrating the skull.

its quiet compared to just about everything else, so you wont alert other zombies.

get one of those lakeside machine .22lr machine guns to mow em down.. lol

smaller calibers would probably be the best way to go...unless you are looking at shooting distance, where the larger calibers excel.

when youre fighting off huge waves though, something closer to either a shotgun or p90 might be best.

Rem 700 VLS .308 (9 pounds naked), but boy does it shoot!
Brit copy of the Fal in .308
Rem 600 Mohawk in .308
A couple or 3 ruger, rem, marlin .22's )the marlin is a 22mag)
A marlin 30-30 lever gun
Several shotguns, counting my sweet short barreled 20 savage pump, a 16 Rem a 20 rem 870 and a couple 12's
SEVERAL assorted handguns from 22, 32, 38/357, 9mm and 45's
Oh, Yeah, a Whole plane load (retired AF ya know) of Sharp, pointy chunks of steel.

DPMS/Stag AR carbine w/ Eotech 5.12
Saiga 12 w/ mag full of 10 rounds of 00buck

S&W 640 loaded w/ .357
S&W 629 w/ CT laser grips loaded with Buffalo Bore 305 grain .44Mag
Glock 22 w/ Gold Dots

thanks....I highly recommend the Waki....there seems to be an abundance of cheap squash around my area...lots of pumpkin farms selling pumpkins for a buck or two. A small price to pay for that smile you'll try to wipe off your face after decimating a pumpkin with your Waki

Re: Zombie Eradication Kit (ZEK) - 10/28/09 06:58 PM

Digs,

I really want a Ruck. But, I cannot find one within my limited price range. The Waki at about 400 right. Has anyone compared the Waki and Ruck? Pro's and Con's? SR101 vs. Infi for a long blade? Should I hold out on the Waki and just save for a Ruck? (and hope the zombies don't attack before then)
Posted By: digthisbigcrux

Re: Zombie Eradication Kit (ZEK) - 10/28/09 07:11 PM

kuanomar...I've never even held a Ruck, but at about half the price the Waki does everything I'd want a blade of that size to do. In case you haven't seen it...this video should clear up any doubt you might have about the ability of SR-101. Plus...same Busse warranty. If by some remote freak event that the blade did fail...you're covered.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRnVY9qLCEE

I'd advise to check out the Waki and use the money you saved for another Busse Kin blade or two.

It's pretty accurate and fires every time you pull the trigger, unlike most other . 22 WMR semis. The muzzle flash is something amazing too. Probably around 5-6'. There was a third world country that was going to buy them for all their police officer's, but I think the assault weapon ban killed the company first. They made a carbine version that was pretty cool to. I wish I had one.

How do those stats stack up with the 5.7x28mm? Seems like if they are even close the .22 mag might be a better value.

Pretty much a toss up spec wise.

Re: Zombie Eradication Kit (ZEK) - 11/18/09 12:51 AM

The 5.7x28mm out of a FiveseveN can match .22 WMR ballistics out of a rifle. So, it's a little better. Bullet construction of the 5.7 is probably better for SD.

Still, in real world use, there's probably not a tremendous advantage. So, like Tedwca said, "pretty much a toss up."

The .22WMR will get you more ammo for the money allowing more practice. That could be a deciding factor in real world application.

Re: Zombie Eradication Kit (ZEK) - 11/18/09 04:03 AM

I would suspect that center fire ammo would be more reliable than a rim fire cartridge, but I've never had any issues with that. Also you can get parts for the new gun and the Grendel has been abandoned long ago.

Very good points. I guess if I am worried about the reliability I might purchase solely CCI etc. but then the price starts increasing also. The bullet design is likely quite a bit better. For a survival type pistol your final point may be the most important. Looking on gunbroker there do seem to be quite a few parts available but that does not mean I would be able to purchase the part I need in a time of need.

Man sorry it took so long to answered...

The sheath is actually the one that comes with CS Recon Scout. It actually works pretty good. I removed the retention strap because it was snagging and scarring up the gaurd on my RS but I wish I had left it on there to see if it would have been good for the regulator. But it's the right size sheath for the regulator.

I KNOW you are. Not a nice place to be. I didn't come in until Feb of 1974 but I talked to a lot of "Nam Vets". Very confusing war.

It's fun to mess around with folks from the different branches of the service when everyone knows it is nothing more than just messing around. Sometimes I get concened someone might take it that I am insulting them. That's why I call myself a Zoomie. Maybe that will let them know that I am just messing around.

Re: Zombie Eradication Kit (ZEK) - 02/28/10 02:45 PM

I never felt confused as much as I felt angry and frustrated. When you fight a war, you fight to win, not play politics and games with the warriors' lives via STUPID Rules of Engagement!!! We lost a lot of good guys because of that!!! Don't get me started - I will probably rant until some time next year!

On a lighter note, how's things in your neck of the woods?

Re: Zombie Eradication Kit (ZEK) - 02/28/10 02:49 PM

I think you're right Randy! Actually, most of us had fathers who had served in WWII, who had inculcated in us a sense of loyalty and duty to our country. We were just carrying on the tradition of citizen/soldiers started back in 1776.

Looks to be another nice day. But My wife is gonna have a very hard and emotional day today. As I've said, our daughter in-law (and my wife's son) came in this weekend. Well They will be leaving later on today to head back out to Wally world Centeral in Arkansas. BUT, at least she will be seeing them again in April when she goes out there for the birth of the baby.

Re: Zombie Eradication Kit (ZEK) - 02/28/10 02:51 PM

Yeah, My Dad was in the Korean (police action, HA!)war and there was still some sense of pride, honor, duty then, even by the politicans (or at least somewhat).

That will give her time to plan and look forward to something!
My wife's youngest sister is getting married again in May and asked Sherrie to bake her wedding cake, etc. She is excited and happy to help her sister, and I am happy for them both. Really a win-win situation all the way around, as I am happiest when my wife is happy. We get along real well!

Thanks, Always loved guns and knives. Just never really got into good knives till I went to machine school to get my machinist certificate and took a couple metallurgy classes. After that I really got into steels and the make up of each and man, I would sit on the computer for days just reading about steels and knives etc. Thats how I came across bussekin and the forums. Now Im addicted to Knives more so than guns. Im content with the guns I have for now. So Im working on my knife collection now.

Well Dogs, since the last post (prior to the one above) was THREE YEARS AGO I have acquired a B8, a 911 and a 711 (thanks to a GREAT Dog) and a couple others, including my Moderator exclusive BLACK handled Mud Mutt (eat your heart out guys) smile and probably some others I just can't remember.

Re: Zombie Eradication Kit (ZEK) - 09/19/15 01:00 PM

Ive thought about getting a silencer for my ruger .22 lite pistol. I haven't took the plunge yet but might get the ball rolling by the end of the year. I haven't added to much to my arsenal just a bunch of extra 33 round magazines for my glock 19 9mm.

Sorta easy. Just dissolve those Styrofoam packing "Peanuts" in gasoline until you get a really viscous "Paste". Supposed to work really well and stick like crazy!

I think that both the TRASH1 AND the Chop House will qualify! They should make a good combo, and IF you find yourself needing a third blade, the skinner would be an excellent knife so you can gather the hide for holsters and sheaths like JJ and Buy Brown have cobbled together. grin
