I need to make a sacrifice...

I need to make a sacrifice... - 11/15/09 02:57 AM

Ok, dogs. I'm looking for some advice. I made a rather expensive knife purchase (of an unnamed brand) and I think I should sacrifice one of my Scrappers to remain comfortable with the purchase. I've not finalized my decision on selling one, but I want to know what you all think.

I'm thinking of getting rid of a 5" or 7" blade. Here's what I have:

DMCG
DMDC
Ratmandu
Scrapper 5

Yard Guard
Chopweiler
SOD
Regulator Bowie

The Ratmandu, Chopweiler, Regulator Bowie, and Scrapper 5 will almost definitely stay. Of the 5's, I'm thinking maybe the DMDC. Here's my rationale: the DMDC slices better than the DMCG, but I have the Ratmandu and Scrapper 5 for that. Besides, the DMCG is used and a very unique blade that would be hard to replace. Of the 7's, I'm thinking either the SOD or Yard Guard. The SOD because I have the Chopweiler. The Yard Guard because it's not quite as practical as the SOD, but it's a nice looking knife and would be harder to replace down the road. It's my only recurve, too.

The last option is not to worry about my purchase and only sell a knife if I have to. So what do you all think?

Thanks in advance.

No regrets. Sell plasma, [censored], or uneccesary organs if absolutely required.

Sell the new 'unnamed' knife for a profit, and POOF, no more predicament

Well, so far you guys haven't surprised me with your recommendations!

Oh, and the unnamed knife wouldn't sell for much profit. I'll just say it's a model that's due to be discontinued that I just had to have!

I don't know your financial situation, but my knee-jerk reaction would be that, as much as a make it a point to pay off my credit cards every month to avoid interest payments, I'd pay a month's interest if necessary to avoid selling any of my knives (only one month though, pay it off ASAP -- interest payments are wasted resources and should be avoided whenever possible). However, if you have to let one go, then your reasoning seems sound; just know that if you decide to replace it in the future, you'll probably pay a premium on the secondary market.

I'd lose the yard hook or dmcg personally. I don't like overly fat blades and that definitely describes the dmcg, and the yard hook is too short of a knife to really benefit from the recurve. I had it's swamp rat brother mini mojo and ended up passing it on.

A man after my own heart... I agree.. sell something else...or be a gigolo. To paraphrase Paul Masson "we will sell no knife unless we have to".. okay... so its not even close... but you get my point...

Whatever you choose, make sure it makes it over to Andy's Busse Exchange Forum.

Actually, now that I think of it, the chopweiler would be another one I'd consider getting rid of - the SoD is a lighter knife with a better handle for chopping. The SoD is an ideal camp knife - light enough for carrying, but big enough for serious jobs.

when i saw your list, i immediately picked two that you mentioned. the DMDC and the yard guard.

sell whichever one will bring you more money. if you don't know which that is (i don't) then list them both, let one sell, and withdraw the second.

Keep em all - you will regret selling ANY of your knives down the road .

Re: I need to make a sacrifice... - 11/15/09 04:39 AM

I see some very good points here. To expound on my rationale, I do like to have a diverse range of knife designs. That's why I'd want to keep the DMCG and possibly the Yard Guard. As for the Chopweiler, it just feels and looks too nice to consider selling. In all actuality, I'm hoping if I procrastinate making a decision, any buyer's remorse will wear off and I won't sell anything! This wouldn't be the first time something like that happened!

That's a pretty good idea! Of those two, I might lean more toward the DMDC because I also have a Becker BK2 that is in the 5" range (granted it's a BIG 5" knife). I'd sell the BK2, but it wouldn't bring in much money and I've rehandled it with a permanent handle.

I would loose the yard hook, but I am not a fan of recurves. I just wish I had such a nice list of knives to talk about. I suppose I am jeolous of your challenge.

Oh my! I feel like I have hardly any knives compared to a lot of guys here! That list doesn't include a couple Rangers and two DF's either. (as well as some other random ones)

Not to worry; once the sickness begins, it only gets worse! You'll end up like a lot of these dogs with big collections, too!

Besides, I see that Sarsquatch in your avatar! I don't have any Busse's... yet!

don't be. i can tell you honestly i wish i had done all the research first, bought my two or three favorites, and never looked back. no i have so many blades my bed isn't big enough to lay them all out at once.

that's the worst part of how we always get releases. you can't choose a favorite from a product line and ignore the rest. jerry makes you decide for every knife individually.

I hear what you're saying! It seems like almost every release is the "best" knife to have! That's how I see it, at least. Then I end up with a collection of similar knives, but each has something specific to the design that makes me want to keep it. -Sigh- I guess it's just the genius of Busse!

I only have one Scrap Yard and one Busse. There always seems to be that one that I am perving for. I ask my self, "will this realy get any use?" How many knives can one person realy put to use with out creating times to use them? It sounds like you have most bases covered just with what you listed.

Sounds like you're not fully infected yet! I will admit, my knives see far less use than I want them to see. My bases are more than covered with what I have. Practically speaking, folders would be a better investment since I carry one every day. Oh well! Such is life of the sickened!

go, sell all you have, and buy the FBM, endura, and a swisstool.

then run like hell.

if i was following my own advice, i would cheat. i actually did do that, once. sold almost all my knives to fund my first FBM.

i'd have to keep my khukris, two or three swords, spydies, SAK's, and the battle mistress descendants.

If you're talking about me,... that's a good one! I'm still in college and my "significant other" is done and working as a dental hygienist. She doesn't want to buy me knives (but she lets me buy them), but she buys me quite a bit else. It's kinda funny because we've been together off and on, and during the off times I purchased a couple firearms which she hated. I think she's realized now that these are just my hobbies and that won't change . While she may not really like these particular hobbies, she deals with it ok. If she bought me knives, I don't know what I'd do with myself!

Not to step on the thread, but I received a Victorinox Swiss Army Swisstool Spirit Multi-tool (and Rally SAK combo pack) on Friday. I was a bit disappointed in it because Amazon's product description said that it was 3-1/4 inches long and it's actually 4-1/4. I intend to pocket carry instead of using the belt pouch, so the difference is fairly significant. I pondered sending it back, but decided that it was probably about as small as it could be and still have truly useful pliers. I carried it yesterday, and while it's larger than I hoped, it'll work. For whatever it's worth, Amazon is doing a promo of $10 off on any Victorinox order over $50 purchased from them, so that combo pack bottom-lined at a little under $50 with free shipping. I believe I'll end up liking the Swisstool Spirit a lot, but wish the description had been more accurate so that my expectations hadn't been so off.

If I only had one Busse Combat chopper, I'd probably go with a FSH or a hand-shaped NMSFNO because they're a little lighter-weight than the FBM, but many consider an FBM to be the flagship BC.

True, but I could always strip the DMCG. I like satin finish best, too.

As a side note, you're from the Pacific Northwest? Where about? I lived around Puget Sound for a couple years. Beautiful part of the country!
