A Good Hunt & Out Of Pocket For Part Of This Week - 11/16/09 04:52 AM

Hey Dogs, for the past couple of days I have been on a deer hunting trip with my son Mike (now 13yrs old). The weather was spectacular and actually down right warm. We had a great time, told stories, cooked most of our meals and really enjoyed the time together.

At 8:05 this morning, Mike got a nice doe. Wow the excitement that pursued with hauling it out of the field. I think he has re-told the story with infinite detail at least 14 times. He fell asleep a couple of hours ago and I think it will take a steel bar to pry him out of bed in the morning.

He did say with much compassion that he was sorry that I did not get a deer but maybe the next time I could be as good as him...trash talk and in your face fun. It is good that he is not competitive <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

What a great time and a set of memories that will last a long time.

By the way, I will be out of pocket for a portion of this week with travel and production meetings but I will try to break if possible and get on the forum for at least a little bit.

In the mean time, I would ask you to help each other make the goal of 30 posts or 3000 post depending on your target for the patch.

Enjoy your son Dan- they grow up fast. Way too soon you will have 8 grandkids like I now have <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />. Every day I remind myself that they are all very special gifts to me for a very short time-Thanks & Enjoy <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

Good advice.

It wasn't that long ago that I was teaching him how to hold a gun not alone shoot it.

Glad you had a great time with your son. I dont have a son so I bond with my dog, but what can you do.

You most likely can get your dog to retrieve for you...I am learning that a 13 yr old cannot be taught to retrieve <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif" alt="" />

I'm guessing probably some sort of Cold Steel <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

What, I just meant, since it's fall, and they were outdoors, the steel was probably cold to the touch. You know, from the cool fall temperatures.

Maybe Dan was field testing a future Scrap Yard release. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crossfingers.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

He probably used some super custom made by the master's hand that is so sharp is not only cut the deer, but also split each blood cell it touched. The next best thing to a light saber!

At least thats what I would use if I had the kinds of resourses Dan and Jerry have.

Oh yeah, this is my 30th post. The patch is all mine, all mine I say!

That would be awesome to have some sort of small hunting, skinning knife from the yard. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

Congratulations. I can't wait until my son is a little older so we can start doing these types of things.

I'm surprised no one's asked yet, but what rifle/caliber did he use?

Cool deal, Dan. By the way, at Easton, your Scrapper 5 SE was flying off the tables. Easily the most popular knife over the 2 days. Great deal!

Excellent Work training the boy. Good Show.

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

Re: A Good Hunt & Out Of Pocket For Part Of This W - 11/19/09 04:27 AM

Congrats on the good hunt brother. I have been deer hunting with my dad for the past few days.....good times. I will always have the memories that we create with me for life.....special times. I am 33 and love every min of hunting with my dad. I know these days won't be around forever and really appreciate them more every year.

I took a doe on Sunday....used my Scrapper 5LE to gut and skin. Monday morning we cut her up. I used only one knife for all tasks...gutting, skinning and butchering. Not once did I have to sharpen that blade. My dad was there as well as my cousin and they were both impressed. Dad even makes his own custom blades but has not seen a SY product in action. The really cool thing is dad always takes my knives home with him after each day to sharpen. He looked at the Scrapped 5 LE and said that it did not need it and was pretty impressed....that is a huge compliment for my dad. On Tuesday night dad took a doe. He gutted it with on of his knives but I helped skin it and cut off some unwanted fat. Still the Scrapper 5 LE did not need any touch up. WOW what a knife!!

Re: A Good Hunt & Out Of Pocket For Part Of This W - 11/19/09 08:25 AM

Funny did something similar.
My youngest brother and I started our nephew hunting when he turned 18 and said he wanted to try it.
We worked hard to get him his first deer but we did it.
Now 3 years later his dad (my middle brother) decided to try hunting again.
He never liked it as a kid and hadn't tried it in over 15 years.
Last week the four of us took 5 days to go hunting and he got his first deer. Now he is talking about next year, this was the first time that we three brothers (not to mention my nephew)have spent this much time alone together.
It was something the youngest brother and I have been hoping for, for a very long time.

It was a great time even if i ended up sick

I will add that the Scrapper 5LE was a little thick. It made some to the finer tasks a little harder but it made quick work out of that Doe none the less. The mudder handles made it very comfortable in the cold Missouri rain. Also, I did have to use a hatchet to split the pelvis but did use the LE to open the chest.

Cool! Sounds like a life long memory for the both of you.

Still teaching my young ones about firearms with bb guns. My son will move up to 22's this/next year. My little girl is happy enough just hitting the target from 7 yards.
