Do you EDC big blades on the order of the SOD?

Do you EDC big blades on the order of the SOD? - 11/18/09 02:43 PM

I was wondering if anyone consistantly carries a big 6" or greater blade. It is easy to carry them out in the woods, but what about in every day life? I don't care what people think, I just need it to be comfortable, and I am very active. The only way I can think might work is with a nice leather sheath with dangler,....but I have other knives with that setup, and getting in and out of trucks and shoveling proves problematic. So I guess my question is....do you carry large knives often, and what is your trick for comfortable carry.

Thanks fellas

AI - I carry a large knife every day as I live out in the country and have no concerns about "sheeple". Most of the time I use a dangler style sheath I have made. I also made some straps with a holster clip attached and snap so that I can just run the strap through the sheath's belt loop and clip it on my belt and go. Occasionally I will just run some heavy cord through the sheath and wear it over my shoulder, like a shoulder holstered pistol.

I carry a 6" blade everyday; my SJ. I actually prefer a higher carry than a dangler.

I like the handle to ride up my side; it keeps the knife up further, and it keeps it tight against my body. FOr woods carry, I like the drop leg style more.

Here is my setup:

For EDC in the city, Houston, I really feel obligated to follow the 5.5" limit for non-outdoors activity carry. Even then I rarely carry a fixed bladed knife as if I ever was arrested I just do not want to have to explain by I am carrying a large fixed knife. Even an s5 is going to look huge to many people around here. The connotation of large can vary greatly with what judge, jury, and police officers you deal with.

Its funny that I think people would be more accepting of someone accidentally hopefully, revealing their CCW pistol then wearing a fixed blade of any length greater than 3.5" or so.

If you mean true EDC, that would only be folders for me. I only carry a big knife if I am going into a place where I am likely to need one.

Toast, hello fellow Texan!

Agent Iron, there's a 5.5 limit for me as well but as a general rule, a folder is quite enough.

Yehay Devil_505, are you enjoying the weather? My arthritis is killing me but it is so worth not having the heat and humidity. This is the time of year I enjoy living in/around Houston.

My EDCs generally top off at 5.5" and they are usually in the cross draw position although I can say that i will NEVER use any of the squared off, clip style belt locks on a sheath again (not to pick on any company directly). They cut into your side when sitting or squatting.
My cross draws all have a heavy nylon or sometimes poly 2" wide strapping around them attached with rivets to the sheath, wrapped around the back and around the belt, back across the front and they close via 2 heavy duty snaps.
Very comfy and never cuts in.

I only EDC a folder. It would attract a lot of unnecessary attention if I carried something larger like a SOD in a metro area.

I always have my Scrapper 5 CG in my car though.

just my opinion, but edc'ing a large fixed blade is like open carrying a handgun, it may be legal were you are but brings to much attention to it. i usually edc a small folder.

I hate to flop down $80 bucks for a nice rainwalker sheath for the beast for occasional trips to the woods. I guess I can carry it in my BK9 sheath for now. If I could carry it comfortably I would do it. I carry my S5 with regularity and always have a BK11 or Izula along my belt. It is legal here, and I am a landscaper...I don't get many strange looks. One of my helpers is a gal who carries a big Hori....it passes just fine....even looks a bit like Res C.

Thanks for the thoughts fellas!

I don't think I can even carry a fixed blade here. I EDC a folder. I have a BK-2 in the car. When I'm around the house or in the woods, I tend to carry a puukko in my pocket.

7.62 shooter at Swamp Rat EDCs a Ratweiler. He's a contractor I believe, and uses it for construction related work.

I've carried fixed blade up to RMD in town frequently. I haven't in a while though, because I already carry so much weight in my pockets, and I don't really need it daily enough to warrant carrying it. I do EDC a Dumpster Mutt in my Maxped Jumbo though that I do EDC, but I leave it in the truck.

DFLE. I just stuck it in the (deep) right front pocket of my Rocawear jeans, and only the handle stuck out which was covered by my shirt and coat. Why? Just because I could. Only did it once. Pic is in the bathroom of Aldi. No, I didn't risk freaking anyone out...it was a single person bathroom, locking door, and my foot in front of the door blocking it from opening.

Toast and Devil,

Fellow-Texican hello.

I too follow the 5.5" rule. I did try EDC'ing my DMutt but I found it impractical for my daily routine (mostly indoors). I usually stick to a large folder like the Military or an Emerson and a smaller SAK or Boker SubCom combination.

I would love to EDC a fixed blade but OK has some stupid laws about fixed blades, and most blades really. I EDC a folder, a three blade gent, and a bali at times.

I EDC an S5 LE in a drop sheath I made. Get some questions about it around the office, but nothing too serious. Of course, if they ever asked me to leave permanently, it probably wouldn't be the worst thing that ever happened to me. ('Take this job and shove it' playing softly in the background!)

EDC for me is also a medium folder. In my socialist State of MA (where Freedom started and ended), anthing larger than 2 inches is VERY SCARY to most people. Fixed blade EDC - not a chance here. In the woods, sure, but I prefer 5-6 inches.

Was doing some chopping with a dogfather at a Scout campout the other week. One of the smaller kids asked with wide eyes "Is THAT a machete???" "Hey look! He has a machete!" "Why are you using a machete???".

They don't see too many real knives in these parts. Baahhhh... baahhhh

Re: Do you EDC big blades on the order of the SOD? - 11/22/09 04:59 AM

I was wearing my S5 today as I do often, but today a gal I see at a store I frequent said to me "I didn't know you carried a knife". She looked bewildered. My helper told her "all the time". The gal is in her early 50's, very sweet...I just love her, but anyway I replied "does it scare you?" and she, with hesitation said "yes". I respect the woman, but can not understand the gross ignorance. She knows me and trusts me, but she fears an inanimate object. I never have once seen a knife, of it's own power, get up and stab someone. It is wild. Some other guys at another business loved it.

I don't want to intimadate sweet ladies, but at the same time don't want to give up what I love because of ignorance. I hope maybe carrying will provoke more questions so there can be good communication and education.

I've been carrying my CS Voyager x2 quite a bit recently. While it's only a folder, I'm really growing used to the idea of using a 6" blade regularly.

There's a half constructed Tank Buster sheath sitting on a table around here too, once it's finished I plan to carry that as much as possible.
(This sheath is something else, I'll post about it when it's done.)

When I bought my Sig P220 many years ago, they were giving away one of the large vaquero grande (?) has a 6 inch recurved serrated blade. Boy does it cut. I have carried it a couple times and was surprised at how easily it did carry. Go figure.

I've never carried a large blade in NYC. For many years it was a Buck folder in its case. Now what I carry depends upon where I'm going and how I get there. Usually it is my Terzuola folder clipped sidedraw to the waistband of my pants. If it's more dress up a Spyderco Delicia. When my arm was in a sling after surgery I did carry a Gossman PSK in the sling when traveling on the subway to physical therapy.
