I didn't pick a handle material, either would work depending on the design.

The more and more I "bum" around the woods the more I leave my larger knives at home. The last couple of hikes I've only brought a folder.

If I'm camping, that's different, I'll need more capable tools to build fires with.

I love my SOD and I love the Regulator, but the fixed blade I still reach for most often is the DMDC.

A little thicker than I voted for in the pole, but it seems to fit the other categories pretty well.

All good points.

I always have a folder. Usually an Emerson a100.

4-5,full convex,res-c,sr101,3/16th for me

although i would choose 154cm as well

Re: What would be you perfect ' woods-bummin' knif - 12/07/09 08:47 PM

Chose 4-5", 3/16", 154CM, full convex and Res-C handle.

Went with the 154CM since I do a fair amount of hiking in the Northwest where
conditions can be very damp.

Looks like the S5-CG wins <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

4 inch, tip to handl. I like NON stainless but would be satisfied with 154 and Micarta/g10 for durability and it won't melt if ya get it to hot. And oh yeah, 3/16. It WOULD be abused a lot.

there's no INFI option - the S5LE should win this one <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Agreed! S5LE is just about ideal. For a true woods knife, I'd prefer one a little longer and thicker than the S5, but I don't at all feel like I'd be handicapped in anyway with the S5. I EDC the S5LE and it's proven to be the most useful knife I've ever carried.

Re: What would be you perfect ' woods-bummin' knif - 12/07/09 11:42 PM

The DFLE is my favorite. There's not a size option on there for that???? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Since the woods where I live can get kinda thick.. and thorny, a machete is a regular choice as well, but the DFLE gives me a really good balance of knife and machete.

I've always got a folder and multitool as well, that usually covers me for small blades. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> I do like the S5 a lot too, I guess it fits in all the categories. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

for light hiking, I like the 4" size, although like many folks, the S5 is working in way into regular carry. So light, tough and nicely sized! when I get my pants from Jeff, it will get out more!

The S5 is fine. So is the Scrap Muk!

The Muk looks to me like a good "meat" knife. How is it as a fire making blade?

(I missed out on the Muk [with some regret], so I have zero experience.)

I've only used mine in the kitchen so far. I don't have a sheath for it or the Bird Dog yet.

Funny...I didn't vote the way the results are turning out....

...but I could live with the popular choices too!!!!

Like the original Nessmuk, it works just fine to split kindling and such.

Voted for 3"-4", 1/8" thick, full convex, SR101 with micarta grips....that would be the perfect woods/bushcraft knife.

Well, now I regret missing the Muk even more. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif" alt="" />

I tell you, that was the LAST time I took a "break" from the yard.

Learned MY lesson. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/paperbag.gif" alt="" />

If I could have my wishes, then either SS5 LE or Ratmandu without the choil!
Or if I really can have my wishes, an HRLM in satin INFI without choil. I have even thought of having a custom HRLM (W/O choil) clone made from A2 or 3V. Oh well, If I could have my wishes I suppose World Peace and ending hunger (and stupidity) should come first.

If only one knife then 5-6", 3/16, Convex, and either SR101 or 154CM. I guess it depends on what I will expect to encounter. If in a small forest then a folder or 5" or smaller fixed should do it. If I were camping I would go with a big 8-10" and a small, thin-blade <5" fixed and probably a folder and my SAK.

Re: What would be you perfect ' woods-bummin' knif - 12/09/09 06:43 AM

SS4 or S5LE for me, with a thin light Delica or Endura for slicing. Anything more than casual and I'd jump to the NMFSNO and a folder.

S5CG for bumming.
A long stay in the thick would call for the Regulator + S5 + 22" Ontario 'chete.

Re: What would be you perfect ' woods-bummin' knif - 12/10/09 07:32 AM

I got my Scrapper-5 for a camping/hiking knife. It didn't come with a sheath so I have never used it. The only complaints I have with it is I just don't care for choils and I wish it were full flat ground. Other than that, it is a very well balanced knife. Once I get a nice kydex sheath for it and the weather warms up, I will try taking it camping and see what I think.

In the mean time, I have been using my Falkniven F-1 and I have been impressed. For a smaller knife, it has a lot of blade because it doesn't have one of those stupid choils that waste cutting edge.

Re: What would be you perfect ' woods-bummin' knif - 12/10/09 07:38 AM

My ScrapMuk would make a good "woods-bummin knife for sure, but
if I could get my Ratmandu in a Res-C handle, that would just about
do it for me. That or my Camp Tramp.

Cheers

I absolutely love the scrapper 5. It carries so well on the belt and is more than comfortable to use. I guess my perfect knife then would have to be a Scrapper 5LE with orange mudders. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

It is reground completely. Changed the shape more than I intended. So I got a new one.

I am actually real happy with my dumpster mutt DC most of the time. by me people look at you funny with a larger knife in the woods for some reason so this is samll enough most people dont even see it, and in the spring and fall my hoodie covers it completely. Sometimes its just easier that way.

Re: What would be you perfect ' woods-bummin' knif - 12/13/09 11:36 PM

I let my brother take an NMSFNO in a thigh rig through the woods to a waterfall for some photos and he didn't get any funny looks. He's a lean muscular savage Wolverine-looking guy though so it doesn't look out of place on him. I use to keep a Becker patrol machete strapped on the right side of my pack and never had any problems. I think the key is bringing something that looks more like a tool, and context is important.
