New rifle (.308)

New rifle (.308) - 12/14/09 03:28 PM

Got this PTR-91 last week. Been a while since I've owned a larger caliber rifle. Loving this one so far.

Have yet to decide if I'm going to change anything. Probably do a scope on a claw mount and a magpul stock when funds permit.

Re: New rifle (.308) - 12/14/09 05:53 PM

Great rifle. Look at Bill Springfield for a trigger job as he is the best for the money, and it will help a bunch. Claw mount, Magpul PRS stock with riser would make a nice 90 look too. Look at the wide forend with a German bipod as they are the easiest way to get your accuracy. Have fun, I just got back into the .308 arena and have a blast 9pun intended).

I was looking at one like that a while back but I ended up getting a deal on a PSG1.
Just get the trigger worked on a bit and you're good.

Re: New rifle (.308) - 12/14/09 07:53 PM

I'll get some more pics up after the camera is charged.

Trigger isn't horrible but I agree it could use some work for the type of rifle it is. I'll have to look into the bi pod fore-end. I wanted to add a bi pod but wasn't sure how I was going to go about it.

.308 holes makes invisible soles!

This is your sign..........................go for it. I got out of the 7.62x51mm game for a while but got back into it recently and I have had a lot of fun with it. Besides, the 308 allows you to shoot less and feel good about it. Kinda like a lager compared ot a Miller Light beer.

enjoy. regards,SSB.

Re: New rifle (.308) - 12/17/09 06:46 PM

The only .308 I have owned was an older Remington 600 (I believe I cannot really remember the specifics). The rifle was very light, ~6 lbs., and beat the snot out of me. I am sure that the very thin hard plastic butt pad did not help much. I fired all of seven rounds through it and was black and blue up and down my right shoulder and chest. I admit to being nervous about trying another .308. I would hope that the m14, G3, and HK91 would be much less painful being semi-auto and quite a bit heavier. Has anyone seen or tried the Kel-tec RFB?

The semi-autos do have less felt recoil than the Toasts mentions above. Semi's are fun, but a good heavy brl is more accurate.

I owned a Enfield #5 Jungle Carbine bolt action rechambered in .308 and that rifle kicked harder than any rifle I owned. I thought all .308's were like that. My SA M1A is a sweet shooting rifle. I can shoot it all day long.

This does 1 hole groups at 100 yrds.

Never seen a Jungle carbine in 308. That is too cool. I have a couple of regular .303 Enfields I need to get out of storage. One I bought for 65 dollars and another was a gift. Wish they were still that cheap.

LOL...the No5 Carbine does kick bad...worse in .303 with the heavier bullets...the metal butt plate really needs tucking in tight...quite an accurate little rifle though in it's day...I use one in .303 for service rifle comps...and for our Xmas shoots for a bit of fun.

It was the #5 Jungle Carbine and it was a really nice rifle. I think it was Navy Arms. I got it from Roses Dept store back when they sold all sorts of military surplus rifles and paid $150.00 for it. I ended up trading it for a Chinese SKS. Kind of regret trading it.

That was the main reason why I traded it...i have yet to shoot a rifle that kicked that bad. It was a beautiful rifle though.

Re: New rifle (.308) - 03/12/10 07:28 AM

Funny this thread came back, started talking to a friend today about building a FAL.

Nice bolt action. For the longest time I've been wanting to pick up a Saiga 7.62x39, but the thing that has been holding me back is the availability of other firearms in that same caliber. The one I've been researching on lately is the bolt action CZ 527 in 7.62x39, it's a nice compact size and looks like a lot of fun to shoot. Only thing is it doesn't seem to fire cheap ammo well because of the harder primer, which defeats the purpose sharing ammo for the Saiga.

With most bolt actions with a fixed/internal box mag.,you push the rounds down into the mag with the bolt open.Every time you cycle/open close the bolt it ejects/feeds a new round.Like a simi, but you rack the bolt yourself.

After some thought, I think I'm going to drop the 7.62x39 (Saiga, CZ 527, and Draco AK pistol) in favor of the .308 (Rem 700, M1A, FAL, AR-10, etc..). I have so many more options and it's what I wanted originally.

Re: New rifle (.308) - 03/13/10 05:52 PM

Mrpink, if your thinking of a bolt action .308 take a look at Tikka T3, I have a lightweight version and love it. It's made in Finland and has a rep for great out of box accuracy. They make varmint / heavy barreled versions in stainless or blued. I put a muzzle brake and a shock absorbing pad on it and it feels like shooting a 223. The other thing I like about it is that it is clip fed so loading and unloading is quick and easy. With a Zeiss 3.5x10x40 scope it's one nice shooter.

I think they are imported by Beretta, and you can find them on their site. Most larger dealers have them or will get them.

Whittakers in Kentucky has good prices. Ship to your FFL dealer. You can get a nice AR-10 for about $1300.

For ammo, my favorite is Black Hills red box match ammo. This works really well in all my 308s. Order a case. This is the only way to get ammo anymore due to price gouging.

Performs like Federal GMM, but about $10 a box cheaper.

Very nice. I'm looking into .308's and can't decide yet...I was leaning towards a Fulton Armory but decided I don't want to spend that much...Now Im thinking of going with this one from DBArms.

Very Nice! I dont think I can own that here in Commiefornia unless it has a bullet button on it because of the folding stock. I hate this place most the time! I moving to Texas as soon as my youngest is in college....8 more years!!!

Post some pics if you get it!

This thread got me looking at the Remington 700 SPS Tactical, I like the shorter 20" barrel.

I have a question about the remington 700 4 round internal box, what the heck is it and how does it function? Every video I've seen, the shooter manual loads each round.

This is my Rem 700 PSS LTR DM

Here are the Box magazines. The black is the better built one that came form the LE shop. The second is a stock Rem box mag.

It is a just a detachable magazine. Once in the rifle it functions just like a standard internal magazine. You can load them one at a time if you want. The box mag just makes for faster reloads.

Sounds good but we will have to get our beer from TX, KS, MO, AR, CO, or NM since our beer here is 3.2 (food grade)................pork chop in a can.

M/B, I miss my LTR. I have had a PSS, VSSF, and the LTR. LTR was by far the easiest to pack around, provided plenty of accuracy, and just got the job done. What ammo does your LTR like? Mine hated Federal GM but loved the Hornady A-Max in the 168 gr, IMR 4895, and CCI primers.

Mine really likes the Fed GM 168. So I have stuck with it. I have one of the few DM's that worked great from the factory.
