The best place is probably the Golden Manor Hotel in Muldraugh, KY, because that's where the Busse crew sets up. I can't say that's where they'll always stay, but that's been their choice for years.

Here's Jerry's post (and open "night before" invitation) from the last show:
Attention!!!... HOGs, Dogs, & Rats Who Are Headed To Knob Creek...

Re: Knob Creek - 03/03/10 08:27 PM

I'll be there bright and early on the 9th waiting for the show to open. It's only a little over an hour drive for me so I'll just be there for Friday's festivities.

Sweet!!!! I'm a teacher and my spring break is that week! I have a buddy that lives in Louisville, so maybe I can stay with him and be the first one there Friday morning to swoop on some sweet blades! I've never been. Do they usually have Dogs, Hogs, and Rats there?

I just found out when it was....I am totally worked up now. I can't wait!

Bussekin set up at KC? If the answer is yes, I might have to make the 1.75 hour drive

Re: Knob Creek - 03/08/10 02:39 AM

Just one word of warning that some might consider "political correctness". Most of the things at Knob Creek would probably considered be fairly normal for people in the US who are into shooting and military history. However, that doesn't mean that some folks don't go a bit farther than you might consider tasteful.

When I met Peter (Steel Fan), who is from the UK, he seemed taken back by some booths selling Nazi paraphernalia, and there's some guy who I've seen at several of the shows who wears what looks like a waffen uniform (I don't know if he's a reenactor or just some sort of nut, and it hasn't mattered enough to me to ask). Of course, if I tell most people how much I've spent on knives and swords, they think I'm some sort of nut.

In Europe, people react way differently to the Nazi-thing than, "Don't look or talk to them; it'll just encourage them." Anyway, just be aware that a minority of the folks who attend Knob Creek may push freedom of speech harder than would be appropriate in polite society. Nothing X-rated mind you, but there are some who just push limits in a very right-wing sort of way, so if you you have younger kids and bring the whole family, you might have some explaining to do.

Jim is telling the truth!!! There are indeed some very :interesting" people that attend the Knob Creek events.

man that looks like a real good time. too bad its so far! there will never be anything like that here in california. i would love to go and see what blades busse and scrapyard bring! one of these years im gonna road trip it over there.

Re: Knob Creek - 03/08/10 10:40 AM

Jim - I wasn't aware of that behavior (Nazi thing) at Knob Creek. I would really be disappointed and angry to come across that myself. Ironic that an event like the Knob would support rights such as gun ownership yet allow a representation of one of mankind's worst nightmares to ply their trade. Some folks really push the limits of "free speech", etc.

Yes- I was told about Knob and that it was plenty offensive .Just my opinion-Thanks

Re: Knob Creek - 03/08/10 11:36 PM

Wow....I think you started something here Jim!!

Come on folks..... a boycott because a few guys want to wear uniforms and sell memorabilia!! Freedom of speech is another one of those constitutional rights that we all still have(at least for a while). Also "this part of the country seems to allow that type of behavior" is a bit offensive in its self. Having been raised in KY for most of my junior and young adult life does not in any way mean that I would wear or own items like that. I know what emotions items like that bring up. It is also very short sided to say that it would not fly in Oregon. I assure you that there are people like this all over the nation.

Here is a quote from a article that was written about the Knob Creek Machine Gun Show:

"I do not think of us as an extremist or militia gathering, but we do not regulate any items sold," Knob Creek Gun Range owner and festival chief Kenny Sumner wrote, responding to E-mailed questions about booth C-22. "If someone wants to sell white supremacist and neo-Nazi crap, that's OK with me. If it offends anyone, they don't have to stop at that vendor's table. It's just like strip clubs. I don't care nothing about them and they can be wherever they want. I have the ability to stop in or drive by. This is America and we do have the right to choose. That's why I do not restrict any of the vendors at our show."

I know this is going to piss some of you off but hey..... I can express my opinions just like the next guy/gal.

Re: Knob Creek - 03/09/10 12:42 AM

jforbush - you are absolutely right in your post. Through the years one of the things we have fought for is freedom of speech. Twisted as it may seem at times, it is a right to be respected. I would NOT boycott Knob Creek just because of a few idiots selling garbage like that - I just would not buy it and ignore them. Thanks for your post.

Re: Knob Creek - 03/09/10 01:01 AM

If you're like me, and the only reason you go to Knob Creek is to buy knives at the Busse table, then (at the risk of increasing competition) your "best" plan (as long as the Busse crew does it) is to go to the motel on the night before Knob Creek starts. If you want to attend the show too, that's great - stay the night and go - but the "first come" selection of steel (and Amy's cheesecake) happens that night at the motel.

Last Fall, I brought a bottle of 10-yo Rip Van Winkle, which almost no one was interested in -- I ended up taking more than 3/4 of it back home with me. This year, I think I'll probably bring some plastic cups/forks and paper plates -- those were in much higher demand than booze (at least until Garth sent someone out on a run).

I'm not saying that the show isn't fun, although after my first it became sort of "same old" to me. Last time, I didn't even sit down in the bleachers to watch the firing line. The final day's night shoot would probably be a different story, but as I said, my target was the Busse booth, so I always came on Friday mornings and was in-place waiting for the show to open.

I think I'll be bringing some picnic gear instead. I brought the bottle last time, expecting it to go over much better than it did. My intent was to leave it, but decided not to due to the underwhelming response.

In fairness to the crew, they had just made a long trip and set up immediately (before they'd even had a chance to settle in their own gear). They were also trying to be good hosts and since they didn't know everyone who showed up, they needed to keep an eye on their knives to make sure nothing got "lost" in two rooms and hallway filled with fairly dynamic knife grabbers (they weren't obvious about it, but I noticed that someone was usually standing at the intersection where they had a clear sight-line). They were also looking at a fairly early morning, so drinking wasn't high on their priority list.

I live local, so I couldn't drink much because I was driving home. The only ones who reasonably could were folks who were staying at the motel. Overall, plates for the pizzas Garth ordered and plates/forks for cheesecake, and cups & 2-liters of soft drinks seemed much more order of the day.

Blade is a much bigger show and they have the oink-ficial induction dinners, but the Busse crew always brings it to Knob Creek too, and twice a year. I'm just saying... For folks who collect Bussekin knives, the Louisville area is a great place to live.

Here's a couple updates. Jerry posted this open invitation earlier today:
Trough Raiders!!!! If you Are Headed To Knob Creek....
That's when I'm going.

The second item is a Louisville weather report; first off, it's been beautiful leading into Knob Creek, mostly clear, with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s. However, it looks like thunderstorms tonight and about a 20-degree drop in temperatures ( http://weather.yahoo.com/united-states/kentucky/louisville-2442327 ). Morning showers on Thursday, followed by sunshine and improving temperatures throughout the weekend.
