SOD or Chopweiler?

SOD or Chopweiler? - 03/06/10 06:34 AM

Here's a question for all:

Do you prefer the SOD or the Chopweiler, and why?

Once I got a Chopweiler, I thought that would be the end all of seven inch camp blades for me. Well, the SOD was later released and at first, I didn't think I'd care to have one. However, as time went on and the release date approached, I realized that I needed a SOD, too! Now, among other seven inchers, I have both the SOD and Chopweiler and ask myself if there is really a huge benefit of one over the other. Here are the pros I see of each:

SOD Pros:
Res C comfort
SR77 toughness
Better corrosion resistance

Chopweiler Pros:
SR101 edge retention
Full tang and micarta handles for greater durability

I'm sure there are more pros of each, but I really want to know what you all think! Thanks for your input!

there both nice but i prefer the Chop..Ill be dumping my current sod to replace it with the chopweiler... the dogfather has the best comfort and being bigger than the SOD was another deciding factor for me

the chopweiler has a differtial heat treat that makes it super tough. I think sr101 is about the best edge rention out there. I have had only good experiences and I know it lasts longer than my sr77 and carbon V knives

Between those two, I'd always go with the SoD. Chopweiler handles look good, but don't feel right to me. The way the top of the handle drops as it approaches the blade feels awkward to me, although I know that some people love them. I've picked up several from the table, but always put them back down and go with something else. My favorite Bussekin in this size is the FSH -- it fills my hand just right.

I think you covered the strengths of each knife pretty well. Another thing the SOD has going for it is light weight. That might make a difference to someone who was trying to keep weight to a minimum. They are both great camp knives.

The Camp Tramp is an amazing camp knife. For such a light knife, it's a chopping machine. The only advantage I can see that it has over the SOD is edge retention. The SOD is certainly in the CT tradition. It can chop as well and is surely as tough. I actually prefer the blade shape of the SOD. But the Camp Tramp was the first of its type, and deserves its legendary status.
