Take more pic's, you have some nice land out there. Since I can't be there to hike around. Are you surrounded by the woods, or do you have neighbors nearby?
Posted By: Horn Dog

Re: Slow day, where is everyone? - 03/22/07 11:21 PM

I have neighbors on each side and across the road from me, but the back of my yard is on a salt marsh with two small hammocks in it. We all have lots of 3 to 10 acres. I'll walk outside and snap some photos. If you look closely at the last photo you will see the remains of my old target stand. It is 100 m from my back porch.

That field is actually under water at high tide. The Guale Indians were the main coastal tribe. I know secret places, deep in the Altmaha swamp where there are old oyster shell mounds.

The red one is a 2003 Sahara Edition. It is my daughter Bonnie's (the blonde in the mule). The blue one is a 2007 Wrangler X Unlimited. They are both trail rated but not as hard core as the Rubicons (or as expensive).

Have not been there since 2001. Its hard to get there and easy to get lost in that swamp. If the river is high, you can't get there. I need to go back, soon. It calls to me. I will certainly take some pics. You won't believe them. It looks like the Amazon.

That is an amazing place you have there. I am going to find my own version of paradise in the saskatchawan bush. I would love to have my Scrapyard pals visit as well. It would be best to visit me during hunting season and HD in winter.
I plan to make it to Daytona bike week some time and I bet HD would be a blast to see that with!

That would make sense to me. We all seek our own little Valhallas. I had thought of selling and going to West Virginia or Tennessee after da yoots grow up. Don't know yet. Bike week is wild. Last one I went to was in 2004. That was when I had a friend able to watch da yoots.

My aunt lives in the cape and her husband owns a farm in Bolinger county... They say you can feel your I.Q. drop as soon as you cross the county line. That is where his farm is located. His sister lives there however when we go out there we go target shooting an chop wood for the fireplace. I miss it out there.

Dan - you are certainly right about development in the country. That is exactly what has happened to Branson. When I vacationed in the area back in the sixties, Branson was really a nice, rural area with lots of country and very little traffic. Now it is just one tourist draw after another, and the traffic is terrible! It has transitioned from a quaint little country town to just another crowded tourist trap. Even though I am only two hours away, I avoid Branson and their "attractions". Tom

Get this crap. The Forest Preserves in our area..... The only green way that Chicago has and one of the only cities to have one has very crappy funding... So what do they want to do? Sell of sections.... Obviously PRESERVE means nothing. I am so pissed about this! People need to be more aware of the loss of country because it is happening to quickly. And the people around here need to be aware of the fact that this is a unique environment that will disappear quickly to money grubbing bastards! Also th immigration increase does not help because it pushes others out of the citiy into the suburbs and in turn pushes them out into the country.

The whole [censored] thing makes me sick and I am glad for the fact that I am able to document what I find because even the local archaeologists don't care... The only care if there is a road to be built... The don't TRY to even find these spots for research.... WHILE they still exist. They just moan that it is disappearing ! Sounds like you need to take your wife on a nice, relaxing vacation in the country, such as a fishing resort area. Check with the Chamber of Commerce for things she might be interested in, such as flea markets, shopping, etc. She may appreciate the more relaxed life-style and friendliness of folks in the country the more she experiences it.

I moved to California and met my wife. My wife lived in LA county all her life and when we moved to orange county that was a big deal...I laughed. I had mentioned a few times about moving over the years but she was not wild about it. The people the attutudes the traffic the high cost of living the continual building on every square foot of land finaly got to her. Mind you California is in a (perpetual) drought and they were still going to build 14,000 new houses plus schools just south of us. My wife had enough so we moved.

It was a big change moving from a city of 94,000 to one of 16,000 but she loves it and she can't wait to get into the new house in the country.

Bors - 16,000 ? Our little town has a population of 259, and I live four miles from town !!!

I have a VietNam buddy who lives in Los Angeles, and he has visited us a couple of times. It was brewed with extra hops and more malt to boost the alcohol and preserve the beer for the long trip to India. Regular Pale Ale would spoil. They were supposed to cut it with water and serve it to the men when it arrived. But the officers liked it just the way it was!

It sure is. Or, at least what passes for civilization nowadays-- some metrosexual, technogeek, pseudo-intellectual, mass consumerist, pop cultural noise that numbs the senses and clutters the mind. The further away from it I can get, the better I feel and the clearer I think.

I raised a little hell on the Road King today. That was good. [censored], I got Porter, and some Sam Adams Holiday beer, but not a drop of IPA. Oooh, a Guinness
Draft. I can chase Whiskey with that, just as good as an IPA!

I saw the poll, but did not see any real data of value. The Busse Family should set up a loyal customer option, that would allow us to buy 1 of any new production knife and if you want more you have to F5 like the rest.

The problem with loyal customer programs is it hurts the new guys who want to get in the game. I'm all for nuking the ebay sharks but really want to support Dan's philosophy of making the knives available to the masses.

Many businesses have similar concepts of preferred buyer program. I do not like the hunt (F5ing all night long), but many do and revel in their victories when they score a buy!

I agree 100%. I think that they buying limit should be like 3 - hard to justify needed more than that per person - would cut down on those trying to profit off of Dan's generous low priced offerings... Any more than 3 should require approval from Dan or Patti after a legit excuse.

And I think Jerry charges like $100 per inch (to include the handle). Maybe someday I'll do one up!

Anyways, I haven't heard of any SY customs, but maybe Dan would be open to some during a slow season... he's been busy pushing knives out towards us now though - so I doubt he's got any time!

That is sort of my concern too. I love and use my knives and want to pay a fair price, not an artificially self inflated market. Where a few wanna be capitalists can snatch up all of the stock and then turn around and mark it up 50-100% because they know there are no more of that stock to be had.

I think this is a good idea. The hard core types who need more than 3 blades will either cheat the system anyhow using another account name or will buy more from others that are looking to sell to rotate their blade collection.

After the Dogfather release I watched the exchange and Ebay and there wasn't a flood of knives pouring forth. The knives that sold were offered by different individuals. As emotional as this issue is, I'm not convinced there's a real big problem yet. That doesn't mean there won't be in the future, just that I haven't seen it yet.

I am talking low cost customs like Justin of Range knives does. For example I would like to have thicker G-10 or micarta scales for my DF versus the standard Resiperene C, but that is not an option. Or maybe serrated blade or satin finish blade versus black crinkle. I guess one choice keeps the production flowing quickly and keeps the prices down.

Does Scrap Yard do any custom blades? Or is the LEs as far as they go?

Busse Combat does, but I don't know how. Do they really bribe Jerry Busse with Johnny Walker Blue and then plunk down a grand for a custom Steel Heart?

No customs yet Zero. Don't know what the future holds but customs don't really fit the Scrapyard Model.

The Busse Custom Shop is a total mystery to me so I can't help ya there. I have no idea how they decide what they'll spend their time on.

Like these I really like the fact that Justin will do mods to a production model for cheap...

Yes exactly Dice! Great minds think alike, I want some slight changes in these fine production SYKCO blades, nothing major. Like the blue scales. Is that G-10? Could Justin mail me some new grips for my RD-7 if e-mailed him?

Yup - cheap superblue..

BUT... (j/s)

Re: Slow day, where is everyone? - 03/24/07 08:00 AM

That blue color was kind of a fluke. The next time I did it I just got a blacker color... then, I realized that what I had done the first time was apply the blueing, and then sprayed "liquid wrench" directly on top of the bluing before rinsing... so thats what the secret was I gues..

Posted By: diceman

Re: Slow day, where is everyone? - 03/24/07 08:01 AM

The 2nd time I did it (after the first time I used it, it scuffed up the bluing ever so slightly, and I wanted to see how easy touchups were...)

So this is what it looks like now.

Re: Slow day, where is everyone? - 03/24/07 08:02 AM

I think some of the cold blue kits leave a real gunmetal blue. I thought surface prep was one of the things that affected color.

Re: Slow day, where is everyone? - 03/24/07 08:03 AM

1st application looked like this... then I did it again and put the liquid wrench on it...

I dunno man... I used a strong degreaser (gun scrubber) and then applied the bluing - thats it.

I'm really happy w/ it on that knife - but don't think I'm going to be doing any more of them... Definately not my Satin Rangers!

I have no idea. Justin thought that it had something to do w/ stopping the oxidation - I'm assuming that the lack of oxygen forces the bluing to react w/ the steel while being oxygen starved... The bluing itself is a blue color.

Oooh... on the spot... lets see.

I like the RD's because they're indestructable. If you're a "details" kind of guy, the stuff like the flaky finish and other imperfections could get to you. I'm not one of those guys.

The RATS are nice and light, sharp, and the attention to detail is very good. They're thinner... sharper... I don't have a favorite I guess. I've had great customer service from both companies. Mike Perrin at RAT is a great guy.

I did not actually time myself but your looking at somwhere in the neighborhood of 200-250 hours.

The rings are Stainless steel Split rings. (like key rings). Their made for the fishing industry. I have made about a dozen shirts all different. My latest shirts use split rings and solid punced rings. Their lighter and a bit stronger.

Here is a video of a test I did on the split ring / punched ring shirt.

The first three are thrusting using a Benchmade M2 Nimravus
The forth one is cutting using an out of the box ontario 1-18 Machete
The fifth one ia an overhand thrust using the Benchmade M2 Nimravus
Neither one defeated the mail.

I did my first 2 shirts in the mid/late 90s. The rest I've done over last 4 years or so. I'm into history and spent 18 years doing the SCA Thing. And actually fought in the the shirt pictured.

It's not difficult to do you just do it one ring at a time while you watching movies, Football, Basketball or what ever.

Life is too short to be uptight about things like that! It is just funny! Besides, South Park is equal opportunity! Nothing and no one is safe from them!

Kinda like Chris Rock. I always find his humor to be right on target!

Or Dennis Leary or the old Eddie Murphy!

Leary is great. I loved his small role in "Suicide Kings" - which is one of my all time favorite movies...

Muphy is also classic.

And Steve Martin.

Adam Sandler.

John Candy, David Spade & Chris Farley...

I love Southpark. It's one of my favorite shows. I watch it every weekday.

Here Chris Rock on the electric chair? “Electricity costs money, my tax money!” “What we need is a stabbin’ chair, stabbin’ don’t cost a d*mn thing!”
