Beyond frustrated!!!!!!

Beyond frustrated!!!!!! - 06/12/10 01:15 AM

I have a sad story to tell. Back when the scrapper 5's were in the store I bought one for myself and one for my brother as a college graduation present. Fast forward to today my brother and his long time friend have been hiking the Appalachian trail since may 31st. My brother injured his ankle and had to call it quits on the 6th and left his scrapper 5 and david brown sheath with his friend so that he would have a solid knife with him in case of emergency. Wednesday his friend reached one of the shipping depots on the trail where they can pick up supplies and and send stuff home that is not needed. Since he was the only one still hiking he was looking to lighten his load anyway that he could and one of the guys at the depot suggested that he purchase a pocket knife and send the scrapper home to save on weight. (Clearly he has no idea about knives or it wouldn't have been going home but that is besides the point) My brother received the package from UPS today and it was light one scrapper 5. The package was tampered with and in our opinion the person at the shipping depot has a nice new knife. We called them today and of course we got the story oh we dont know what could have happened no one here would ever steal from a customer. We are getting UPS to cover the insurance on the package but that of course only is 100 dollars, and that barely covers the knife if it was still in the store and he is still out his sheath. We are still trying to speak with the store owner but he has yet to return any phone calls. I guess the moral of the story is to never let your knives out of your sight! Sorry for the long winded post just had to vent.

That is terrible, taking advantage of someone who is long gone up the trail & he will probably never see again.I wonder how many other folks he has swindled.

Your brother needs to post that on one or all of the AP trail hiking forums to warn others.

While it's possible that someone at the depot tampered with his package; it's also possible that someone along the USPS path did. About a month ago, I ordered two khukris from a non-Bussekin company. When the box arrived, it it was in this condition and only contained one of the khuks:

The company didn't insure it for the actual value, but they replaced it anyway. I just ordered a couple swords from them, and received notification that they've lost confidence in USPS and were shipping them with UPS.

Good point JIm.There have been many bad stories about our government run mail system on the various boards.
Glad the company replaced your Kuk.

He is definitely working this angle especially as many people frequent this particular stop. I wish I knew the name of the place, I would post it here.

That is rough to hear. Regardless how it happened, the outcome is lousy. Hope that it works out.

I had a similiar experience when I was working at Game Crazy, every time a Fedex shipment came in. it got to the point where we had to count everything on the shipping list before the delivery guy could leave, stuff kept coming up missing. They even got smart and started opening the bottom of the boxes and retaping it... I hope someone nails whoever did this.

Ultimately, whether in this life or beyond, this person will have to answer for that. Hopefully it's sooner rather than later--as in I hope they decide they want to make things right. Sorry about your situation. That really sucks.

Re: Beyond frustrated!!!!!! - 06/13/10 02:17 AM

It definitely depends on where you are too. I live in a major city and do NOT trust USPS. I sent a very long letter to the postmaster general. I've had mail carriers leave packages on the step in a very busy city street and not even attempt to ring the door bell (I know because I was home.) I've also had them not attempt deliver because they assumed I wasn't home (again, no bell), take the package back and not even leave a slip, so I had to call the post office because I thought it was weird the package had not been delivered in a couple of weeks. Along with important documents sent with their "important document" service not being delivered on time, mail missing for weeks at a time, etc., it makes for a very poor track record.

They are only slightly more conscientious when delivering to my work address. They have a racket going where if a package arrive up to a weekend, they keep it in the sorting facility over the weekend but mark it as delivered in the tracking information. The story goes that they get paid time x1.5 if there is a large package load over a weekend.

These are only a few of my bad-to-worse experiences with USPS. I only trust UPS in this city. I've heard that its the other way around in rural areas though.

So I feel your pain, and please post information so no-one else uses this "service".

I haven't had any trouble with USPS here, but I guess it could vary from area to area too. UPS has been good too, but Fed-up... I mean Fedex, has shipped packages for my family that have been broken when they arived.

Do you feel comfortable posting the name of the store here?

If not, let me know which state.

Re: Beyond frustrated!!!!!! - 06/15/10 04:31 PM

I have had problems with UPS and done " fairly well" with USPS. Plus- one wants to make sure you have more than adequate insuranse on parcel so you get full value back. Fed Ex is more expensive- but a much better courier . I guess in the end it comes down to basic integrity.Something that is sadly lacking in the world today . Sorry to hear of your bad expieriance

Re: Beyond frustrated!!!!!! - 06/15/10 05:57 PM

I've had pretty good results with USPS. Pack very carefully and as Ordawg says - always ship insured. I've sent knives as far as Poland and Indonesia.

On the receipt side, I always keep good relationships with the local USPS delivery guys. They will take the time to hide packs round the side of the house when I am not around. They are getting a little too comfortable as I came home early to find the regular guy parked under a tree on my property eating his lunch.

A lot comes down to how the people shipping you stuff pack things. I had an AK delivered in a box to my FFL with no packing at all. All the wood was dinged and there was damage to the metal as well. Busse always use good packing that is strong enough to hold the blades securely.

I will get the store name tomorrow from my brother. This was in North Carolina on the southern section of the AT that I am sure of.

That is so wrong on so many levels. I am really sorry to hear this. Tell your brother to keep an eye on E-Bay it may show up for sale and he can contact them about it being stollen property.
