A Real Survival Knife !

A Real Survival Knife ! - 09/23/10 03:15 AM

I've just spent about 2 hrs splitting wood with my axe and Chopweiler and had to post this.

I've had my Swamprat Chopweiler for 2-3 years now and during the colder months use it every day. Many people don't like to batton but I still find it the easiest way to make small kindling. I deliberately included a couple of the knots I'd beat the Chopweiler through in the pic, believe me I smash this thing with all might strength using a monster baton to get through some of the gnarlier stuff.
Anyway to get to the point in all my time with this knife I have still yet to sharpen it. Other than a quick strop on my pant leg that's it. For some reason today when I'd finished my chopping I decided to test the edge...this thing still shaved hair of my leg !!!!!

I've never been one to buy into all the hype over some knives but the edge holding and toughness of this blade blows me away. If ya want a top survival knife that will never let ya down you won't go far wrong with one of these !

Love my chopweiler. Hopefully they bring the Rat Mastiff Chopper, or even better the Rat Daddy Chopper, or better still the Battle Rat Daddy Chopper. You cant beat res-c.

I've been hoping the yard would release a DogGrandDaddy, or GrandDogDaddy.

Re: A Real Survival Knife ! - 09/24/10 10:31 AM

It might have to be called the Rottweiler - the "enforcer" dog, who works for the DogFather!

The Chopweiler is on my list of "must have" blades.

Nice Pitman. Now you have me wanting a Chopweiler. They aren't easy to find though - at least I haven't been lucky enough to find one yet.

Re: A Real Survival Knife ! - 09/27/10 07:07 PM

Bruce - thanks . I have another question for you....

Is the CT SwampRat's version of the SOD? The only difference I can see is the round choil vs the squared on a SOD.
Posted By: Endeavour Morse

Re: A Real Survival Knife ! - 09/27/10 07:09 PM

Opps - I also see a little thumb ramp on the SOD.
Posted By: Endeavour Morse

Re: A Real Survival Knife ! - 09/27/10 07:11 PM

Okay, now I'm seeing more differences...is the SOD a different grind vs the CT's saber?

Re: A Real Survival Knife ! - 09/27/10 09:12 PM

Guys, just wondering...do you think the scrapizashi will perform well as an outdoor survival knife? the weight and length are reasonable when you compare it to machetes or huge choppers. actually, it appears that this is a machetes that is tough enough to chop down trees and baton through wood. it looks like it might work well for trail blazing? in the Pacific Northwest there is a lot of overgrown trail and i have had to work my way through a lot of Devils club, wild black berries, stinging nettles, and lots of other tree branches and underbrush.

i just imagine you would have some powerful synergy in an outdoor/survival situation when you combine the scrapizashi with a smaller fixed blade.

Re: A Real Survival Knife ! - 09/27/10 09:36 PM

Welcome to the Yard. Where in the PacNW are you we've got a few of us here.

I think the Scizzy could work as an outdoor brush clearing blade although it is a little bigger than I prefer. Plus you may get looks for carrying a sword I like the Busse B11 which looks more like a machete.

That being said the Scizzy will go with me next time I am in the woods.

Re: A Real Survival Knife ! - 09/27/10 09:37 PM

I passed on the Scrapizashi, because I couldn't decide what I'd use it for. In my AO, I value the ability to make shelter and fire above busting brush / trail blazing so I like something in the Dogfather range (10") for a primary survival knife. I also carry a 5" for "general use" (in my case one of the following: SY Urban Mutt; SR RMD; SY Scrapper 5CG).

This isn't a knock against the Dog Sword - I just couldn't figure out its "niche" so instead of buying one I'm saving for two or three of the next release

Re: A Real Survival Knife ! - 09/27/10 10:26 PM

I'm in Northwest Washington, currently right now I'm in Skagit County.

i love my RMD and i take on little day hikes, even if im not planning to build a fire or set up camp. however,if im on a crowded trail, then i will just have a pocket knife. i think if i was walking around with a sword i would get some looks.

i also have the SY Regulator Bowie i use for a bigger camp knife and it seems to perform well. but, i wouldnt mind owning and even bigger blade....

Re: A Real Survival Knife ! - 09/27/10 10:39 PM

Burdan - you can NEVER have too many blades!

I use my Mil Reg for a camp knife, and its performed very well in that role. My only complaint is blade length (too short).

Have you looked at the Busse B11 or SY Dogfather?
Posted By: Burdan

Re: A Real Survival Knife ! - 09/28/10 12:38 AM

i thought i missed my opportunity to get a B11 or a SY dogfather. dont they only have a 1 or 2 offerings at one time? if i missed the time they were doing preorders then i thought the ship sailed and it wont be offered again. are you saying that all knifes (other than the LEs) can be ordered and SY will manufacture them for me. or are you saying i should try to find a seller on the the secondary market?
Posted By: Sethrotull

Re: A Real Survival Knife ! - 09/28/10 12:45 AM

The secondary market is where you would have to look. Unless they did a reissue but there isn't much chance is that.

Re: A Real Survival Knife ! - 09/28/10 02:57 AM

okay, that's what i thought, Bussekin shops only make one or two blade at a time. Architect had my hopes up, i thought there might have been a chance that Dan would recreate some of his old masterpieces for people.

*sigh* I missed out on so many great Bussekin knives.

Re: A Real Survival Knife ! - 09/28/10 03:07 AM

You can also find old blades at shows Blade West (unfortunately cancelled indefinitely) use to be in Portland in Septembers.

There is a big knife show in Eugene each year that gets some Bussekin at it.

Knob Creek is coming up real soon. Keep an eye for someone heading there.

Re: A Real Survival Knife ! - 09/28/10 06:23 AM

maybe it was wishful thinking on my part. i noticed that scrapyard didnt post their Regulator under the "Knives" link. i thought that might have meant that its a limited production...but then i guess all of their knives are limited productions.

come to think of it, have you ever wondered why Bussekin has LE runs- isnt every knife they make a Limited Edition?
Posted By: sumoj275

Re: A Real Survival Knife ! - 09/28/10 06:30 AM

Burdan,
LE is generally in smaller numbers, finer finished out, different edges and/or different angles.
BTW, welcome to the Yard.
