Sip-n-Talk September 2010 - 09/26/10 05:31 AM

Hey Dogs:

I hope you have your favorite drink and are ready to talk. My Buffalo Trace has been poured over the rocks and I am ready.

My First real job was being a Life Guard at a private swim and tennis club. I made 50 cents an hour more than my buddies cutting grass and cleaning up. Big money back then. The the benefits of all those girls ...the ultimate first job...heck I would have paid them to work there, thank goodness they did not know that.

Remember the first one to respond to this post gets a $25 shop credit

Let's sip n talk

Dan

My first job was at age 13, I worked at a marina and drove folks out to the springs to dive with the manatees. Also loaded and unloaded the rentals. I was too young to get paid so the owner let me run up a tab in the dive shop and get things as i could pay for them on my tab. I worked up enough to get a full set of snorkeling gear and a nice dive knife. It was a great job. Driving a boat all day in Sunny FL, meeting people and doing it all on the crystal clear Crystal River. I miss those days.

Other than mowing neighbors' yards, my first "paid" job was mowing grass for a company, and doing other odd jobs such as painting, etc. I started when I was 12, and eventually they started paying me once every couple of weeks so that it was worth cutting a check for it.

Re: Sip-n-Talk September 2010 - 09/26/10 05:39 AM

My first job shaped my future in more ways than I could ever have for-told. My father wanted me to desperately learn a trade...and stay away from just screwing around for the summer. He knew some folks at the local fabrication shop, and got me a job as a fitter's helper.

We built asphalt plants. First summer (I was 15)...I was simply a helper...sweeping up, fetching parts, holding things in place for the welders...basically whatever was needed of me. Learned a lot about building things, and grew strong quickly. 10 hour days in mid-july in texas working inside a shop was a good learning experience about hard work.

The job progresses...next summer I was able to help weld a bit...and some of the guys took me under their wings to teach me the art of welding. The next summer I was hired in as a welder, running mostly 1018 rods and sometimes hard-wire. The fourth summer, I was hired in as a welder...but was given small projects to complete on my own, with my own helper.

I left that last fall for engineering school. This experience provided me with much "know-how" on how things get built from the ground up. I use the knowledge daily...

The owner of the one I worked on tried "free range turkeys" once. Fenced in about 25 acres and just turned a bunch loose. Fed and watered them every day, but other than that they were on their own. Dogs got in once and killed about 200 of them. We put up tree stands to watch for dogs, ended up shooting about half a dozen. I didn't much like that, but couldn't have them killing the birds.

I would kill myself only to go to take a bathroom break and pss by a guy sleeping on a pallet or PTSD guys hanging out talking!

Yep, just an orange flavored drink... and the only thing mixed in it is water.

Haha.

Now, the key point is, does orange relate to the taste, or is that a description of color, like Purple Drink or Blue drink

It's tastes like sweet, sweet... sweetness. And it's bright orange.

It's what we have in the fridge at the moment.

Hard to find...but some folks make a good dry reisling that might work for ya. Also...start looking at local wineries (if you have some)...seems to be the trend to get blends going that are more dry, and don't have that fruity sweet sensation to them.

Personally, there's only two whites I can drink....pinot grigio from Grape Creek Wineries and one called a dirty girl from torre de pietra in Fredericksburg, Tx. Otherwise, it's the dark reds for me.

I like a really good chianti also...but man, they're hit / miss.

Jared, your search fu is better than mine. Took me a bit longer. I think Daniel Wayne is the winner.

I'll go with "Daniel Wayne Blades", but think you've got it nailed.

I live 3.5 hours from the Indianapolis 1500 Gun Show and 1.75 hours from the Louisville KY "Show of Shows".

These were staples of my childhood, and "younger days" but gun shows don't have much appeal to me anymore.

Well I got the Scizzy,a Waki, a DFLE and B11 that Vic did a beautiful job on, a M0LE, a few other large blades, and a couple hawks that should do pretty good when all the 7.62x51mm, 12 ga, 45 acp and 45 colt runs out.

My whole family is from OK. They're all OU fans and I'm the only OSU fan. My brother always gets mad when the undefeated Sooners get beat by the Cowboys with a losing season. He says "why do they have to do that, if the Cowboys win another game they still have a losing season and now the Sooners are no longer undefeated." It makes me laugh.

I have a few things loaded up for the range tomorrow. A M1A, a FAL, a new 1911, a SAA, my bro is taking a 2 1/2" K frame, and not sure what other firearms. Also taking the M9LE, the DFLE and the B11 in hopes to do a little comparison.

It is funny to see the rivalry. I thought OU was going to loose it tonight. Today was the first OU game I have seen this season even though I have been at the 3 home games working a concession stand for our wrestling team.

Ha, I once was plinking with a friend on mine's .270. I saw a ground squirrel on a log about 200 yards away. My buddy said the rifle had not been fired in 20 years. So I put the cross hairs on the squirrel's head and fired, just to see how close I got. The squirrel had disappeared, figured I had missed. I walked to the log and there was the squirrel, headless. That man's grandfather sure could sight in a rifle. Same guy that gave me the H&H.

Here's one I shouldn't share. I was a helicopter crew chief in the service. An arial gunnery instructor. I was training in Yuma, AZ. We were flying along the range shooting at stationary targets, then my pilot calls out "troops in the open at 2 o'clock". That just means firing in a sweeping motion with the XM-218 .50 cal machine gun. So I did, then I saw some wild burrows, and I shot one to pieces. I couldn't stop my self. It was just pink mist. My only military casualty.

I agree. Ground squirrels are a nuissance out west, but I also had a couple of burros as pets with my horses.

Why did that surprise him? When I was a kid we used rocks, shovels and rarely a gun. I had an pump-up crossman pistol that did the job very well too.

I hope that I can make the next.
I did however have a great night with my son. We had some fun male bonding right up till he passed out on the couch.
Congrats to all the dogs that won a shop credit.

Re: Sip-n-Talk September 2010 - 09/27/10 08:59 AM

Darn it!I spent the afternoon & eve. doing a brake job on my roommates car.I can't work on cars at my apt.,so we went to a friends house to do it.My roommate made meatloaf & I did the brakes.Replaced the front calipers & pads then couldn't get the drivers side to bleed. Finally determined that the caliper is bad.Must be a plugged port.Fluid in,no fluid out. Now the auto parts store doesn't have a replacement, they are on order.

Anyhow, sorry I missed it,looks like you dogs had a good one.Congrats to the shop credit winners.
Dan really brought it this time huh.

Did I mention I hate working on cars!!!
My first real job was a ground support equipment mechanic in the Marine Corps right after HS.
This brake job should have been a breeze, but it turned into a nightmare.

So next sip n talk is KC weekend, cool beans.
See ya there.

By the way, I saw some of the stuff Garth is planning to bring to the show...very nice indeed. He might even have a little Scrap. I would just plan on getting there early or possibly meet him the night before at the hotel.
