Our Next Offering. . . . The "SCRAPIVORE" . . .

Posted By: Dumpster Dan

Our Next Offering. . . . The "SCRAPIVORE" . . . - 10/16/10 02:37 AM

SCRAPIVORE

Steel: SR-101 Steel 58-60 RC
Blade: 2 3/4" Long
Overall Length: 6 1/2"
Thickness: Approx: 1/8"

The coated version will be LESS than $50.00 ! ! ! ! !

This compact design allows for full four finger placement on the handle, even with large hands. The finger groove at the front of the handle is sufficiently deep enough to protect the finger from slipping up and onto the edge. The area of the edge in front of this is slightly rounded, offering additional protection as it keeps the cutting edge spaced away from the index finger.

The butt is chisel ground for use as a mini prybar and offers an ideal spot for striking a ferrocerium rod.

This model is going to be hot!!!!!

Dan

I'm really liking the deep blade on this....to end up with a choil-less blade that can work well as a camp-prep knife (when your hand is close to the cutting board). Love the prybar too!

OK...I have to say it...

As I stare at the design...it just looks SO MUCH MORE robust than the skeleton warden / swamp versions. The ScrapiVore has, what I would consider, more "urban" lines and looks as if it would feel more like a "tool" in hand than the others.

Super excited about this one! Thanks again Boss!

I know most of you guys likely wont care, but I need to know the weight of this thing. Also it'd be really nice to see the angles sanded off if it's going to be scaleless. This has massive potential as a go-to Ultralight Hiker tool depending on those variables.

Sorry I'm new here, just jumping right in.

Good to know, Seth. I'll add that to the specs. Maybe Dan will chime in with the weight on the Scrapivore. For purposes of comparison, the Izula weighs 2.0 oz.

Aye, and I currently use the Bark River Bravo Necker 2(3.5" 12C27 blade) as my EDC/trail knife. Which weighs 2.75oz with G-10 scales. Closer to 2.5oz with the Micarta scales. Whole lot more knife than the Izula, although not comfortable wrapped in Paracord like the Izula because of said tang sharp angles.

Would love it if this new offering works comfortably with paracord and weighs in lower than the Izula, which while that has a great warranty, I have no doubt the Scrapivore can take a superior beating.

Thanks for the welcome!

Sure don't. But since the difference in trace elements between alloys is minute compared to the primary ingredient of steel (iron), I wouldn't expect a whole lot of difference in density.

That is exactly what I was thinking!

Re: Our Next Offering. . . . The "SCRAPIVORE" . . . - 10/16/10 06:18 AM

I think the real question is, "How much will you sweat on a neck knife while carrying it?" I do not normally consider a neck knife to be a valid option here in California as that is a potential way to get a felony. Statewide the only legal way to carry a fixed blade is on your waist openly. A neck knife even if not concealed violates this.

It's stupid because I can carry a 3' sword on my hip legally, but a 1" neck knife is a felony.
Yeah, yeah, I know you can't carry hardly anything, Bruce, but that's the peril of SoCal.

I'm not sure how much of a beating you plan to expose your neck knife to, JD. But my guess is that both the Izula and the Scrapivore will hold up extremely well under normal use.

Oh well, no doubt they will, although I have broken an Izula. I use my neck knife for pretty much everything I'm supposed to, and many of the things I'm not supposed to. Beating, prying, stabbing, point first batoning, flat-blade screw-driver, digging holes, etc.. The BravoNecker-2 seems to be taking the abuse quite well, but it sometimes just feels like I shouldn't be treating her like I do.

Very well thought out design Dan. You sure do know how to make knives for those who actually want to USE them! Nice deep blade, thin, useable finger grove - rounded even (thank you!) full handle, and that pry bar butt seals the deal! Now I've got to unload all my extra SW's. Best design of the kins by far.

That's the question all right . . . especially if you're thinking about carrying a Scrapivore LE.

Well, I do plan on getting a couple of these, but I don't do neck carry. I certainly couldn't advocate inside the shirt carry with the LE though. Unless you use RenWax on it. The coated ones should be OK though, unless it's a buddy of mine. Dan threw me a curve ball on this one. I had always expected any SY Necker to be in 154CM. But SR101 is a favorite of mine, too.
It came as something of a surprise to me too, Vic. I wouldn't think Scrap Yard and Swamp Rat would choose to go heads up in the skelly neck knife arena. But that's precisely what has happened. Here are the respective specs for the Swamp Warden and Scrapivore for those who may be interested:

Swamp Rat Swamp Warden:

Steel: SR-101 @ 58-60 RC
Blade: 3" long
Overall Length: 7"
Thickness: 3/16"
Weight: 2.2 oz.
Price: $58.95

Scrap Yard Scrapivore:

Steel: SR-101 @ 58-60 RC
Blade: 2 3/4" Long
Overall Length: 6 1/2"
Thickness: Approx: 1/8"
Weight: TBD
Price: TBD (Less than $50.00 coated)

So the Swamp Warden is slightly bigger overall (Blade Length, OAL and Blade Thickness).
I haven't held the Swamp Warden BUT I don't like the looks of the handle ergo's.
The Scrapivore looks like it will be VERY comfy though and it looks to have a tall blade.
I also REALLY like that there is NO choil, not even the small sharpening choil. JUST blade baby!!!!!!
As a few before me have said I think this may be my first multi knife order.
I'm SOOOOOOOO EXCITED!!!!!!

Dan,
I do believe you have hit a homer with this blade. I will be getting a few for me, and few more for presents. I love my Swamp Warden, carry it quite often since I can conceal it very easy. With this blade I think it will be better since the size and weight are better. No choil, winner for this small of a blade. Coated, true necker. LE because I have too have a shiny one too. Thanks for bringing it. Now when will the blade be available????

Re: Our Next Offering. . . . The "SCRAPIVORE" . . . - 10/16/10 09:00 AM

I am glad some will be coated. The ocean air and sand would eat that SR-101 alive!

Re: Our Next Offering. . . . The "SCRAPIVORE" . . . - 10/16/10 09:06 AM

Very true TT. The LE would be for special things, maybe a forced patina if I ever talk myself into doing one.

Tuf-Cloth works. The only problem is I use knives on food. I keep tuf-cloth on some of my carbon choppers that dont see food use. I keep olive oil or mineral oil on the edges of my coated knives and have not had any issues. One of my swamp wardens has several scratches through the coating from sand being caught in the kydex but no rust yet.

You know I just had a thought. Since Dan is always giving to us, why don't we give something back.

I would like to make a proposal:

Dan should charge $1.00 extra for every Scrapavore (pink) he sells and donate THAT to the Breast cancer awareness program. I am sure no one would object to basically donating the dollar themselves. That way Dan would not have to bear the expense, again.

What think Ye Dawgs? A dollar (or more) to help this important program? But then again the headache of actually getting it donated would fall on Dan's company.

Anyway, what do you think?

This is an interesting idea. My only concern would be the overhead burden on SYKCO to manage it...especially at $1. I might modify the process slightly....

Perhaps one could select a ScrapiVore for purchase in the store. There could be additional selections available (same as color selection is done), for $5, $10, etc....that could also be selected. This would allow folks to donate greater amounts, if it's important to them. If these selections are in your basket at checkout, the SYKCO team knows to send out a pink SV and donates that money to the non-profit.

The problem with stuff like this is that everyone has their preferred non-profit to support....and unless it's championed by someone in SYKCO, this isn't likely to happen.

I've been wearing a SW as a necker inside the shirt in kydex for a few months now (and I sweat enough in the summer especially)and I've had no rust problems on the SR101 uncoated edge, but I do try to keep it clean.

Right. But just to be clear, Rainwalker's SW isn't satin-finished.

Very true, Bruce. A satin finished one would be higher maintenance for sure. But the coated Scrapavore's should do fine, especially in kydex with some occcational preventive maintenance. Re: Our Next Offering. . . . The "SCRAPIVORE" . . . - 10/17/10 07:44 AM

Looks great Dan.
I'm in for a few, coated and clean - looks perfect for pocket carry and every tool box and backpack needs one (guarantees you always have a cutting tool without having to swap them around). No need for neck carry (who does that anyway )

I have other small fixed blades that have optional scales offered (Bravo necker and Izula) and that is a nice option, but one of the things I like most about this type of knife is that it is flat and carries easily in pocket. Too chunky and you lose that. But what I WOULD like as an option is a thin Res-C "sleeve" because I am outdoors a lot in winter and at -20F and colder, bare metal handles or even tangs suck the heat right out of your hand, and I can feel it even through mitts. Para cord wrap does not cut it because paracord is too water absorbent. So how hard would it be to make a thin Res-C sleeve that would slide on, (or scales that would bolt on) leave the butt exposed, but give something between hand and metal ? The Falkniven WMA has a fairly thin rubber covered handle (not removeable) - something like that.

Just a thought.

Plasti dip, I had the same thought. My stepson works for the U.P. railroad, signals section (he builds and refurbishes them) and he dipped SEVERAL of his tools in it. Amazing stuff, and the more you coat it the thicker it gets and it seems pretty darn durable.

I just went back and looked at the pics Dan put up. You could coat the handle all the way up to the plunge line in plasti dip. And you could then just cut off the portion that covered the Chisel ground pommel. The dip would not add very much width but WOULD add a LOT of gripability This little Scraptor is gonna sell VERY well. Hope you got a lot of steel in reserve Dan, You're gonna need it!

I really like the plastic dip idea. I did that on several tool when I worked on barges ages ago. I had forgotten all about it. Maybe Dan will epoxy cord wrap some of these. The difference between a wrapped and unwrapped swamp warden is huge.

I like using a removable Paracord wrap myself, because having some handy cordage on hand is always a good thing. I've got an idea or two for the back end too, but I think it's best to wait until I have one in hand to decide, I might just like it fine with a good kydex sheath and a nicely wrapped handle.

At least the plastidip would seal the cord from soaking up fluids. You can wrap some cord around the sheath or carry some in pack or pocket.

As for the hind end,I'm thinking a V for nail pulling.

Re: Our Next Offering. . . . The "SCRAPIVORE" . . . - 10/18/10 02:36 AM

Let me know when you get a bare bones kydex done for it. I would like to pocket carry and also ONE hole near the top to fasten a belt loop to with chicago screws for on the belt or IWB carry. I'm thinking MAYBE Small of the back inside at somewhere around a 30-45 degree angle. And I am also thinking it would be small enough for horizontal carry in the appendix position as well.

Before I enter into a conversation about modifying the Scrapivore, I'd still like to see some pics of the unmodified Scrapivore in action. The Scrapivore handle is only 3-3/4" long. That isn't quite long enough to pass completely through the palm of my medium-sized hand. So I'd specifically like to see what effect the mini-prybar pommel has on the hand when the Scrapivore is used as a knife and what effect the blade has on the hand when the Scrapivore is used as a mini-prybar. Thanks.
I think that the corners of the pry bar are rounded enough that it should feel fine. However it could be dicey when using the pry bar and holding the spine.! I visualize one with stripped para cord in a stider wrap and covered in heat shrink and another left as is for low profile carry.

Bruce, my thinking may be real off base here, but here it is.

As a Righty(me too) if you held the knife in the right hand, the spine would be against your hand and the bevel would be facing down. Just insert it under what you want to pry and this would elevate the blade upward. Then just push down. Now if you wanted to pry UP with it, yeah it would be sorta hazardous for a righty. BUT if you're prying I would think I would have it in the sheath anyway.

If I had to pry something and was wearing the sheath, I'm sure I will be in too much of a hurry (lazy) to remove it to use it as a handle. And with the wrong hand at that. I can see the splinter report at work now.

Re: Our Next Offering. . . . The "SCRAPIVORE" . . . - 10/19/10 12:41 AM

I don't think would be too much of an issue with small prying tasks. Like pulling large box staples or even small pieces of wood. I wouldn't want to use it for jobs requiring anything close to straining though. It definitely looks like something I would use in a pinch.

well I am coming into this conversation late and am not about to read several pages so excuse me if this point was made but if you had a nice kydex sheath I would keep the blade in the sheath to protect my hands if I had to use the pry bar. You are not going to be prying anything extremely large, there is no real length to use as a lever imo.

WOW. Thanks, Hooker. I was wondering if anyone was going to respond.

As you said, the pommel does appear to have slightly rounded corners. But the back of the pommel is fairly wide and squared off to permit prying. I don't believe I've ever seen another neck knife that incorporates that kind of handle design. How it will feel in the hand remains to be seen. And if I'm a righty (which I am), I don't see how I'd be able to use the prybar without my hand coming into direct contact with the blade. I suppose I could sheath it to prevent that from happening.

Maybe I'm missing something. Anyway, I'm hopeful that pics of the knife in hand will clear up my concerns.
I have been thinking about this and a kydex sheath will be needed in my opinion.

Re: Our Next Offering. . . . The "SCRAPIVORE" . . . - 10/19/10 08:03 PM

But for pocket carry, I think a simple two flat pieces of leather sewn together with the handle buried not quite half way would work out nice.

Re: Our Next Offering. . . . The "SCRAPIVORE" . . . - 10/19/10 08:04 PM

AND if it just had a simple single piece of leather sewn on one side it would also work for horizontal belt carry (I use a 1 1/4 inch belt) hint hint.

I don't think would be too much of an issue with small prying tasks. Like pulling large box staples or even small pieces of wood. I wouldn't want to use it for jobs requiring anything close to straining though. It definitely looks like something I would use in a pinch.
Like opening a wood crate of ammo? Then again if a kydex sheath is reinforced as Bruce mentioned it should be ok.

Re: Our Next Offering. . . . The "SCRAPIVORE" . . - 10/19/10 08:22 PM

There is another knifemaker that uses a thin leather sheath attached with a rivet at the bottom of the handle, open along the entire spine side, and a snap closure to hold the blade in. Opens like a folder.

If that's not a patented design if would be an excellent setup for the scrapivore. In fact I may contact that maker when I get mine.

. . . if you held the knife in the right hand, the spine would be against your hand and the bevel would be facing down. Just insert it under what you want to pry and this would elevate the blade upward. Then just push down. . . .

There it is. Exactly! The Scrapivore is obviously NOT meant for prying open locked bank vaults but is ideal for everyday tasks like prying out large packing staples, opening paint can lids, cans of SPAM, stubborn beer tabs, cleaning under really large thumb nails, horse hooves, scraping lottery tickets, etc. . .

The Scrapivore has more than enough strength for prying anything by hand and more than enough warranty for prying everything else.

I'm starting to daydream about a leather wrap done on the handle of the ScrapiVore. Two pieces, one folded over the top of the handle...the other folded over the bottom of the handle....stitched together in the middle.

The key I think will be sheath strength. Keep in mind that the grip on the knife blade might become fairly tight when the Scrapivore is used for prying. As a result, I'd want some kind of reinforcement along the blade-edge side of the sheath to protect my hand . . . either a heavy welt in the case of leather or extra eyelets and a tight fitting sheath in the case of kydex.
The kydex with extra eyes are the ticket.

I think this is going to be a super popular release. I hope Dan has them in Moss Green, because my wife really liked the MG at Knob Creek. I don't have anything in the color so I figured I'd score one as a gift for her.

Come to think of it, she was telling her family at dinner last night how much she liked the 'Bama Clay and Moss Green at Knob Creek.

Of course, they all think knives are something crazy survivalist types have / use /carry so they didn't get it. However, when she shows up with a Moss Green necker...they'll know I've pulled her to the dark side

I was thinking the same thing. It will be perfect if Dan can offer some kind of Sheath as a combo to go with the awesome Scrapivore.

Hey Dave- great to see you are back at it and going strong !!This offering looks to be one we can all enjoy. Be fun to see the cord wraps-scales- different sheaths-neck- pack configurations or maybe even a piggyback type of carry.Maybe we need to start a thread on all the different ideas and options ? I am thinking i will be need a few of these as ideas grow in my head and listening to your guys thoughts .Looks to be a real winner for most all of us-Thanks

I got woke up at 12:49 am with the smoke alarm chirping. Tried to ignore it but that didnt work. Had to replace the battery but couldnt pry that dang cover open in my stuper , and was thinking, DANG, wish I had my Scrapivore allready. Luckily I had a Swamp Warden handy. Busse Kin saved the day (er night) again. Funny how I see all sorts of things that need to be pried. I'm ready Dan!

A great applications. The last time I faced a low battery in a smoke alarm I pried it with a DogFather and knocked the thing off the ceiling LOL

No pre-order, Gnarly.

Dan (the Boss), will post up when the knives hit the store (and you'll see a lot of commotion about it). I'm positive that if you check the boards at least once per week or so, you will not miss out on these. I have feeling these will be in the store for a good bit, but I could be wrong. Check daily

No sweat...it's about as confusing for newbs as men trying to figure out women, and we've all been there.

So...there are two ways to get knives. BOTH ways, you will see an announcement on the boards....which kindof enforces interaction / dedication to land one. Not to any significant measure...but you can't be sleeping at the wheel either.

The first way is that a release could be offered in the store. If you go to the SYKCO home page...go to Order Here. You'll see the Scrapizashi is currently available for purchase under "knives". Once Dan announces a knife will be up in the store, this is where you go to check / purchase the knife.

The second way, is that they could simply limit a knife to what is called a Ganzaa...typically led by the Busse group. Ganzaaa's typically occur at night, and have specific rules to each Ganzaaa. You have to be online at the time of the Ganzaaa...with an email prepared for what you want to buy. It's kindof a first come first serve type of Hog-fest, so be warned. This is how I got my Wiener...as they were not released in the store. I'm not covering 1/10th of the Ganzaaa details...I'd recommend doing a search on the the word Ganza and you'll find info on the past few.

Hope that helps!

I know that some of the guys will be pining for Orange, even though it's not mudder grips, it'll still look good.

Kinda OT: has anyone ever tried to twist weave two seperate colors together, alternating one over the other? I was experimenting with it at home, but couldn't really tell if I had gotten the effect I was going for since all I had was OD... 200 yds of it...

I'm not concerned at all about the Scrapivore release. Dan already mentioned that these would be up in the store in the next couple of weeks, so I'm confident that these will be a regular release and not offered in a Ganzaa (unless possibly in the future as a Special Edition or something). Rest assured, we'll see these in the store soon!!

Really hope it's the 'store option'; I did some searches, but still unsure about the Ganzaaa option....and how that works.
Sorry to be so dense : I'll look again in the morning, with coffee.

And to the other gentleman who was talking about paracord wraps,I recently got some 'cord that is GITD,some reflective, some both!
( My favorite? The ORANGE! )
Since I'm not a lanyard artist,I sent them to a friend who is and he has made me over a dozen lanyards, including some Safety Lanyards,so far.
Not sure if I can post pictures here.

Didn't mean to drift out in left field...

Sumo- I was thinking, with the way I started my weave on my little junker blade, that I could start two opposing twist weaves and just alternate them on each side, tucking one under the other. Kinda like Gnarly's wrap that he posted pics of, but I'm not sure if it would turn out the same. I will take a pic when I get home and try to post how I did my twist weave tomorrow (in another thread, lol) and perhaps after I get a chance to order some more paracord, see how my little experiment turns out. I learned how to wrap the way I do just fiddling with it, I think I'm ready for some more difficult wrapping ideas.

Welcome to The Yard Overkill.

That offering is coming on the heels of the largest knife Scrap Yard has ever offered. Funny eh?

But yes you stopped in at a great time. I'm sure production is cranking these "Necker" knives at a furious pace. Once stock is ready for the huge quantity of orders I'm sure Dan will list them for sale.

It could be as soon as two weeks!

Stick around, this is a family friendly forum with great brothers.

Peace.

Hey guys, I found out about the latest ScrapYard offering from ar15.com I was about to purchase the Izula until I saw the Scrapivore. I can't wait. Oh, and I need a lefty model!!

I will probably still pick up a Izula but that can wait.

I have been on the board for a few days and so far it has been good reading. Seeing some of the other knives pictured is killing me. I may have to get another job.

I think the Scrapivore will be a great start to my new knife obsession.

Re: Our Next Offering. . . . The "SCRAPIVORE" . . . - 10/30/10 01:56 PM

Thanks for the welcome sumo and PK. I have visited the forum in the past but did not stick around. Years ago, I owned a lot of knives from various makers but as I grew older, I did not see the need for them. Mostly because whenever I used any knife that I owned for anything other than slicing it had let me down. Now, I can't believe how much I have been missing out on. I still have a hard time believing how much abuse these knives as well as others can take and still look good and still work for just about anything.

Thanks again for the welcome. After this run of the Scrapivore, I am hoping to pick up a Dumpster Mutt or Street Scrapper 4. Those were the ones that originally got me interested in knives again.

I like the way the spiral orange looks, but if it were me, I'd go with a color combo that totally blows concealment, like neon green or something brighter, I can't say I like the OD on orange too much.

Re: Our Next Offering. . . . The "SCRAPIVORE" . . . - 11/03/10 03:47 AM

I guess I was thinking that Bright Orange / Green would end up stained with blood....not so sure it'd look all that great after some use. I may be mistaken though, as I've never seen any of it after a period of time.

Re: Our Next Offering. . . . The "SCRAPIVORE" . . . - 11/04/10 01:07 AM

Ishi- It will definitely get dirty, especially working on animals, blood will nasty it up, but 550 cord being largely polymer fibers (I'm largely assuming, but I'm pretty sure since it melts), it shouldn't retain the stain too much. I would guess that if you really wanted to pretty it up again, you could just handwash it in mild detergent and it would clean up pretty well. Might be hard to do on the blade though.

Worst case scenario, it's cheap, buy more!

It makes perfect sense, I'm surprised it never crossed my mind, honestly. I just learned by trial and error on my knives. I destroyed the handle on my Machete when I ran it over, so I cord-wrapped it, that was quite fun figuring out.

Boots, I knew you were in school but thought something might have happened. you could always do like the Tonester and his Police Academy training, give us weekly updates.
Yeah I can give you guys updates if you want. Right now I am in a lord of the rings class at my university. Its pretty awesome as all we do is read and write our thoughts on the chapters. I also got a girlfriend, which is something else big that has happened since I was last in the yard. For the most part life right now is really good, and life just keeps looking better everyday.

I had thought about getting an LE, but finally decided to pass on it. I have been known to abuse my blades and with Dan's warning I just don't want to take the chance of messing up such an excellent blade. So I will just wait on the CG
