handles on scrapizashi?? - 04/19/11 08:14 PM

what do you guys think?

before answering go out and beat the crap out of a piece of real hard wood for 5 minutes without gloves just for the fun of it and then post your answer.)

i had the chance to try out cgeyers scrapizashi a few weekends ago on a hickory log. it was fun to chop on the log as hard as i could but each time i hit the log the spine and handle wrapping along the spine dug into my hand and i really felt each blow.

chuck said he would like to have a neoprene handle put on which will no doubt make it easier on the hands and more fun to play with.

i was thinking of paracord wrap as another option but the neoprene sounds like a better idea and would offer better grip even when wet.

i'm anxious to see what it looks like after i get done putting some neoprene on and then giving it a try on some more hickory.

i'll do a wip of how i put neoprene on and how i shape and finish the neoprene.

it looks like it might be next weekend before chuck can make it over.

Re: handles on scrapizashi?? - 04/26/11 09:41 AM

i have a knife to put neoprene on possibly tomorrow but its not the scrapizashi. it will be done the same way so if anyone wants to see the pictures i'll email them to you.

when i get around to contouring the handle on the belt sander i'll make a few short vids that can be emailed.

when i do the scrapizashi i'll make several longer vids but i'll have to find someone to host them.

richardj, are you talking about the plastidip, or real wetsuit neoprene?

Re: handles on scrapizashi?? - 04/26/11 10:51 PM

Res-c handles would be ideal, IMHO, as in an elongated regulator handle

Re: handles on scrapizashi?? - 04/26/11 10:57 PM

i have some 1/2" thick neoprene that a friend brought me. i have different widths but it is all 1/2" thick. look at my website and you'll see some knives that have neoprene handles.

We asked Dan about that at Blade last year, he said they tried Res-c, but on a handle that long with a blade that long there was to much twisting, they really wanted to use res-c, but they couldn't

Re: handles on scrapizashi?? - 04/28/11 07:22 PM

i'm anxious to get some neoprene on it and give it a try. later today i'm going to take some shots of how i put the neoprene on a knife i'm making and if it holds off on raining i'll go outside and see if i can make a vid showing how to shape the neoprene down. if i have any problems with the vid i'll take some pictures.

Re: handles on scrapizashi?? - 04/28/11 09:24 PM

Richard, when you say neoprene do you mean like wet suit material or the rubber mat that you pick up at the Tractor Supply store? I have seen the rubber matting used before but do not recall a neoprene. Looking forward to the pics and video.

Re: handles on scrapizashi?? - 04/28/11 09:55 PM

the neoprene i get is 1/2" thick and i have 3 or 4 different widths. some pieces i have are about 3-4' long. i just trace out the handle and cut off a piece just a hair oversize and glue it on and sand it to shape. its solid like a rubber 0 ring and oil resistant.

Re: handles on scrapizashi?? - 04/28/11 10:01 PM

Sounds like he is talking about the horse stall rubber matting the guys on the cutting circuit are using.
Posted By: richard j

Re: handles on scrapizashi?? - 04/28/11 10:12 PM

nope, nothing like horse stall matting. look at the pictures on my websites and you will see it is not made from ground up rubber but solid material that is extruded.

Re: handles on scrapizashi?? - 04/28/11 10:31 PM

Guess I am not all that bright or not informed. I always thought neoprene was that soft stuff wetsuits and mouse pads (the really soft ones about a 1/4 inch thick or more). Must be different grades of it.

Re: handles on scrapizashi?? - 04/28/11 10:50 PM

it is just like the rubber coating on conveyor belts only thicker if that helps any.

Yeah I think that I get the idea now.

Re: handles on scrapizashi?? - 04/29/11 05:33 PM

keep in mind the knife i'm fixing up is not the scrapizashi but how i put it on would be the same way. i will do another one when chuck gets over here to fix his up. i dont have or use any photo hosting site so how can i post pictures. i'm not signing up for any hosting site so forget that suggestion.

Re: handles on scrapizashi?? - 04/30/11 08:11 AM

wow this took longer than i thought to download the 15 pictures in order and upload them but here it is, sorry for the delay.

and now direct from Richard J's email is the "rest of the story"

anyone has questions they can ask me in the thread but here is how i did it in a condensed version
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
the block is super glue proof that the blade is clamped in. a swivel vise is handy for this step
[Linked Image from i1110.photobucket.com]

i line up the factory cut end on the block and adjust accordingly so the slab covers the handle.
[Linked Image from i1110.photobucket.com]

i trace out the area i need to apply glue in and stick the piece against the block while laying it in place at the same time. i have the slab cut close but leave plenty for final trimming later to be safe.

[Linked Image from i1110.photobucket.com]
i rough up the tang with coarse grit cloth or paper and wire brush off with hand brush.
[Linked Image from i1110.photobucket.com]

i glue up one side of slab and put it in place and hold until glue sets. i repeat for the other side.
[Linked Image from i1110.photobucket.com]
[Linked Image from i1110.photobucket.com]

after glue sets up i trim excess from handle and then go to sander for final profiling
[Linked Image from i1110.photobucket.com]
[Linked Image from i1110.photobucket.com]

to contour handles i lay tape across spine square and wrap around to bottom side of handle for both ends

[Linked Image from i1110.photobucket.com]
[Linked Image from i1110.photobucket.com]
i then sand on the contact roller holding the handle in place and checking results often to make necessary corrections.
[img]http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h459/sar511/11.jpg[/img]

after getting all sections shaped i move onto a roll sander to round the edges before moving to the scotchbrite wheels.
[img]http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h459/sar511/142.jpg[/img]

the scotchbrite wheels remove all scratches and leave a non slip texture.
[img]http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h459/sar511/13.jpg[/img]
[img]http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h459/sar511/12.jpg[/img]

Richard, I hope I got them in order for you, if you see something that needs to be changed just let me know.

thanks for posting the picturs for me. i should have told you to post the pictures seperately in order then post the text below all the pictures seperately. that way it might not be so confusing. i'll send you an email and let you know what to change.

Re: handles on scrapizashi?? - 04/30/11 11:26 PM

since i was working with super glue it was hard to get any shots of putting the neoprene in place. the block helps out a lot for attaching any kind of scales with glue or epoxy that are pinless. i was gave the piece of plastic for spacer material and and found out it was resistant to any kind of glue so i never had to worry about the glued on handles sticking to it.

the tape makes it easy to get the sides even. i look down from the side and watch where the wheel is in relation to the tape so i can keep the line even.
since i clean up with the scotchbrite wheel i can be close to the tape line and not worry about the sides being uneven length. i sand the corners down on a roll sander before going to the scotchbrite wheels. they smooth the rubber nicely which makes it hard to tell any tiny difference

Re: handles on scrapizashi?? - 10/03/11 07:11 AM

chuck and i finally put the handles on the scrapizashi today. i'll let him post the pictures. the neoprene handles made a big difference in how hard you can chop. you can beat the crap out of anything and not really feel much.

I'm curious as to why you didn't cover the tang completely? like they do on samurai swords, I would think that would decrease the shock and vibrations.

Thought I might wrap the end with leather. Had not considered an additional decrease in shock from extending the slabs.
The amount of shock now is a small % of the orig. cord wrap. The extra tackiness of the grip, along with the additional girth of the slabs make it a dream to hold and use
