Your 2 favorite survival knives with a twist - 05/13/11 10:38 PM

Okay Dogs, while we all await the new SY offering, I thought it would be fun to discuss survival knives but there is a twist to this question...

Please list your 2 favorite survival knives - one MUST be a Bussekin blade and the other can be whatever else (including another Bussekin or something different). You don't have to tell us which one you prefer but please comment on why you picked each one. I will post mine in the thread shortly. Thanks and have some fun with it.

Survival knife #1 F,DFLE, B11. (Only one at a time)
Likes : Chops like crazy, great steel, holds a great edge, and has a comfortable handle, not to mention an AWESOME warranty.

Survival knife #2 : Victorinox Swiss Tool
Likes : Many different blades including bits, saws, and other little things to make life easier.

I cheat though, I carry this combo together

Well, since there is so much interest I'll go ahead and add mine.

Survival knife #1 : Scrap Yard Scrapper 6
Likes : Res-C handle, good size for just about anything. Tough.

Survival knife #2 : Falkniven A-1 (Want an A-2 soon)
Likes : Kraton handle, laminated stainless steel. Tough. good size also.

It is a tough decision but of the knives I own I believe those 2 are my choices.

1. Camp Tramp- great all rounder or my Battle Rat because it's so awesome and I have that sweet new sheath for it!
2. SAK Trekker for multipurpose or my Koyote EDC cause it's a great small blade, do a lot, easy to carry, great ergos and plenty tough

Re: Your 2 favorite survival knives with a twist - 05/14/11 08:20 AM

OK,#1-B11 cus one has to be a chopper & whats not to like about the B11?
It's lighter than the DF(my 2nd choise for a chopper)so easier to carry for an extended time.
Res c handles,nuf said.
#2 Vic.Hercules.It has everything else tool wise that you'd need.
(maybe not everything, but darn close & the vic's are much lighter than an all steel MT.)
In a survival situation I want to save as much weight as possible for food, water & ammo.

#1. DFCG (Because I don't have a B11 )
Legendary Choppers, both. Nothing else needs to be said.

#2. MUPPY FANTASTIC smaller do it all blade with a handle you can get your whole hand around. Will work as a much larger blade because of the shape and thickness.

I would also have a leatherman and an EZ-lap model M diamond sharpener. (along with a fire kit, first aid kit, SS water bottles/SS cup....Etc.

1- B11 - What else to say about this one? So light and versitile for it's size.

2- Scrapper 5 - This one could change, but in a survival sutuation I find the S5 a good choice because it is so lightweight and great at smaller tasks

1: Swamp Rat Rat Mastiff

2: Busse NARK

Those two should take care of anything I need.

Hmmm, I may have to add the B11 to my list of Bussekin knives to try and pick up...Maybe I'll have better luck than I am having getting a Weiner Dog or the NMSFNO.

Survival knife #1 : Regulator 6.5
Likes : Because the best knife is the one you have with you. I own this one and it is a little easier to handle than my other Regulator. It feels good in hand and gets 'er done while feeling like it will outlast me.
Survival knife #2 : Leatherman Charge TTi
Likes : This is one of the few Leathermans with higher grade steel for the blade. S30V. Without listing all the tools, it can handle most repair jobs on my gear and do some bush craft to boot. I pack the bit collection with it so it will handle most fasteners/screws.

Survival knife #1 Scrapper 6 heavy enough to do most chores but small enough for delicate work.
Survival knife #2 Super leathermen tools enough to spare, plus I love that saw.

1 DGCG super chopper (or Basic 7 for light travel)

2 Gerber multitool (I have about 4 or 5 of them). I like the replacable saw blades on Gerbers- so you can tailor the saw to the work piece and chuck dull saws away!

You can't easily go wrong with a big Bussekin...

The DFLE has always been pretty much at the top of the list, although the Basic 11, my new NMFBM is right up there too, along with my NMSFNO, and then there's the 6.5 Reg, and the S6, the Ratweiler and... Boy I just can't narrow it down to 2... Oh and there's always gotta be an SAK and /or Multitool in the mix as well.

Great choices guys. Of those that have chosen a multi-tool for one of their survival pack knives (or even if you haven't but have an opinion), which do you prefer and why? Leathermen or Gerber?

I want a NMSFNO and a B-11...and a weinerdog! Maybe someday.

For now, I would settle for the new SY offering whatever that might be.

1. B-11
2. SS4

This combo gets the most workout by me. I haven't found much they can't do...and do well.

As far as INFI goes, IMHO, nothing in the world beats the size / weight combination of the Terror Monkey Desert Storm Fighter.

8" of INFI blade with a weight of 14.5 ounces.

It is the only knife I own two of.

Gerber hands down for me. I have used both but prefer the quick opening of the gerber. Plus the replaceable saber saw blade set up it is he'd to beat or me.

I had my first one for ten years, it didn't have the r.saw feature.

They are very durable and reliable.

Survival Knife #1 = DFCG
Like = Bombproof shelter builder, firewood baton, etc.

Survival Knife #2 = Swamp Rat RMD
Like = Does everything the DF doesn't.

If I were going to have one survival knife it would be a Swamp Rat Chopweiler.

I believe in a "trifecta" though....

Small Fixed Blade = Scrapivore or Rodent Solution (preferred)
Medium Fixed Blade = RMD (preferred)or S5CG
Large Fixed Blade = DF (preferred in trifecta) or SOD or Chopweiler

Victorinox...Swiss Spirit !!!

IMO a step up in quality from both Leatherman and Gerber !

The Leatherman Surge is my first choice, I really like the interchangeable saw blade feature, as well as the size, and one hand opening blades!

The Charge and Wave are my second choices, followed by the Victorinox multitools.

IMHO I prefer leathermen. Gerbers always pinch my hands. My Surge is heavy but when Im in the middle of the desert I love all the options plus it uses a t type replaceable saw/diamond file combo. That I supplement with normal t type recipricating saw blades from any hardware store. In fact I try to use these instead of my blade because they are cheap and tailorable to the job. The sheath has a sleave for a couple of extra blades. The only gripe I have is the the swapable srewdriver bit in it sucks.

Of course all of this is my opinion and I don't mind carrying a super heavy multitool.

Survival knife #1 : S5 LE
Likes : INFI! Good size to batton, tough enough because it is INFI, easy to resharpen in the field. Can be choked up nicely for fine work as well.
Survival knife #2 : Hmm tough prob my SoDF
Likes : It is just [censored] tough and feels like it can smash through anything.

I'd prob also pair those choices with an environment focused tool. For winter/fall in forested areas a Gransfors bruks axe. In swampy areas a Busse Kukri would be amazing!
