Non scrapyard knife advise needed - 10/09/06 11:12 PM

Howdy, all!
I have a Terzoula ATCF, with the titanium handle and pocket clip.
Her is my situation. The damned clip and ti handle are so slick, or smooth, that the knife is constantly coming unattached from my pocket, waistband, etc. The clip just does not grab.
The slightest body movement sends it flying.
I am trying to figure out how I can modify the clip for more purchase. I thought about supergluing some skateboard tape to the inner part of the clip, but that may mess up my pants (i know that sounds lame, but, pants ain't free)
I have roughed the clip inner surface up; no good.
I shrank plastic tubing onto it; the tubing eventually slipped off.
My one thought was of wrapping it with some kind of fine line, to give it some traction, but, I have not discovered what type to use yet.
I did try friction tape; it' too' eventually slid off the clip.
I did draw this shortcoming to the attention of the maker, who simply replied,"yep, I don't use that kind of clip no more". Didn't really fix the problem.
My only solution is to retire the knife, which does piss me off, as I intended it to be the ultimate daily carry knife.
Any ideas, guys?

Try beadblasting the offending clip first. If it still doesn't give you the friction you want, it should be easier to have things adhere to it after the beadblasting. I imagine putting a steeper bend in a Ti clip isn't really a possibility...Pocket or Belt sheath?

What about that grippy rubber mat stuff that they sell for putting in drawers so tools don't slide around? They sell it at Walmart by the kitchen drawer liner paper. Some people also put it in their toolboxes so their tools don't slide when they pull a drawer open.

A variation of Andy's idea is to try some liquid truck-bed liner material, also available at WalMart or auto stores. The stuff that was sprayed on in my truck bed is very "grippy". Good luck! Tom

Did you try actual skate board tape? Works well on one of my knives and, yes, may abbrade your pocket faster.

Thanks for the ideas, guys!
I guess it's off to Walmart for me.
Terzoula's older clips are great; I have a decade old ATCF that grips just fine. He changed clip designs after I placed my order, which I found a bit annoying. The newer style is more of a 'pretty' clip. It looks good, but that is kind of secondary on a combat knife, in my opinion.

Poodle,
Problem with spydies, the points all break off. I was looking for a heavy duty knife that you don't have to baby. Spydies just ain't in the same class as swamp rats, busses, or the scrapyard.

In all else fails put some two part epoxy glue on the belt clip and mould in grip lines while it is drying. Araldite (in UK...) will stick to any metal I've ever encountered and will flex a little so shouldn't come off without a hell of fight!

all knives have limitations; i wouldnt recommend much latteral force on the tips of many fixed blade knives let alone folders. however the clip performance on my edc is more of a concern than my tip breaking off. i have yet to break off a tip from any of my knives reguardless of make or quality.

When it comes to fixed blades no question. Talking about folders I disagree, few folders can beat a military. I edc the carbon/bg42 mili and it rocks. Maybe one day when the Swamp decides to sent me the rattrap that I ordered almost a year ago I'll make an unbiased comparison. Besides spydies are available.

I've only ever broken a Leatherman (PST) and a bit off the end of a Swiss army knife but It's always struck me folder steel blades are hard and thin to cut well and hold a good edge.. This also makes them fragile and pretty much all of them have to be used with some caution. While some are (much) better than others no folder I've ever seen stacked up to a good small fixed blade.

Bodhi - Howdy and Welcome to the Yard! As far as waiting a year for the Swamp to send you a RatTrap, did you check Shomer-Tec's availability ? Perhaps you could get one from them and cancel your order at the Swamp. Good luck! Tom

I've never broken a knife.

I don't think they sell them any more. I checked their page a while back and couldn't find them. Are you sure the Swamp is still filling back orders for them? Have you contacted Eric about it?

Eric knows about it, it will go in the next batch. We will see, but if I get it I will make a review, both knives cost about the same and I'm curious if the RT can take on an experienced maker of folders.

For waiting a YEAR, they should send a freebie of some kind!

Paul,
your epoxy idea is brilliant.
I think I will experiment with that a bit.

find out who (including/especially the maker)might have a clip that fits or could be made to fit your knife...if you find something that kinda fits,a little filework and the right size tap-n-die set will have you firmly clipped in no time!
