I should try it to celabrate the "Non-apacolypse"...but everyone has told me it is way powerful. I usually just go with Powers Whiskey. But I will keep checking this thread for recommendations.

I've had Lucid.... Not bad if you like absinthe... It has extract of wormwood.... Very high proof.... There is another brand I have been wanting to try... Little less proof... I cannot recall the brand

I thought the stuff that was for sale here in the US did not have the "cool" factor stuff included? I have never tried it, kinda partial to bourbon, whiskey, and beer.

Re: OT: Absinthe? - 05/22/11 06:17 AM

They made some changes to the laws and now Absinthe in the US can contain a certain amount of Thujone.

Based on the updated policy, absinthe is considered "thujone-free" if it contains 10 ppm or less thujone.

So, you can party with the green fairy here in the US now.

Really. The wife and I are going to take a few days and get away at the end of the week as we will be out of school on Thursday. I will have to check that out, and see what happens LOL.

If you're not into pouring cold water over a sugar cube on a slotted spoon over the absinthe, you can just drink some in root beer...I've heard it mixes well with root beer and tastes good that way also. I've never tried it so I don't know.

Re: OT: Absinthe? - 05/22/11 06:57 AM

I've tried it a time or two, don't really remember any particular brands.

Absinthe's alright I guess, not really my thing though.

Re: OT: Absinthe? - 05/22/11 07:41 AM

I have had some. I don't recall the brand tho. Stuff is strong. My friend is a pretty big guy 6'4 and about 300 lbs. Two shots of the stuff and he was passed out LOL no joke.

If we would of drank it the traditional way i'm sure it would of tasted a lot better.

Re: OT: Absinthe? - 05/22/11 07:53 AM

I don't use the sugar... Makes it taste worse to me... It tastes like licorice (from the anise) ...the thujone is from the grande wormwood which is a requirement of true absinthe. It is made from the three herbs: anise, fennel, and grande wormwood. very high proof... I think lucid, the first allowed back in the US after the ban (2007) is 62 or 65 % alcohol.... All it did to me is make me fall asleep from the high proof.... It's not that great but worth a shot just to say you have had it

Isn't he the one that cut off his ear, or was that Pablo Picasso?

Re: OT: Absinthe? - 05/22/11 04:52 PM

That was van Goh. I wonder if he was drinking Absinthe when he cut his ear off...?

Re: OT: Absinthe? - 05/22/11 05:19 PM

I guess van Gogh didn't need any drug, he had some screws loose up in his skull... in the and he was mad enough to do anything without any drug;-) Hence his brilliant off the scale paintings!

Re: OT: Absinthe? - 05/22/11 05:29 PM

Apparently he went nuts, threatened Paul Gaugin with a razor blade, then ran to a brothel, cut off his ear, wrapped it in newspaper, and handed the package to a prostitute named Rachel saying to "keep this object carefully".

What a case.

Re: OT: Absinthe? - 05/22/11 09:39 PM

I have tried absinthe from both the US and from Europe (friend brought some back from a trip), using the full water/sugar/spoon method... then eventually just taking shots. After diluting it so much, you have to drink quite a bit to even get intoxicated. I think the thujone "trip" is over hyped, but it is pretty fun to go through the whole ritual.

(bring on the new choppa!!!)

Re: OT: Absinthe? - 05/22/11 11:11 PM

I got caught up in the Absinthe hype a few years ago and decided to try it and did a little research. Ended up buying a pair of crystal mixing glases and the spoon. Bought some Absinthe that had great reviews and was not cheap. The bottle reads EXTRAIT D'ABSINTHE, 68*,QUALITE' SUPERIEURE, NOUVELLE-ORLEANS, L'ESPRIT du VIEUX CARRE. The set was about 200 bucks. Ya know what, I can't stand the stuff . Now it's a party favor that I try to pawn off on friends when they have allready had too much to know better . I don't think it goes bad, sitting there, but then you couldn't tell anyway.

Re: OT: Absinthe? - 05/23/11 02:52 AM

Never tried it.
I did try Ouzo when in Naples.
The sailors in the shop said you gotta try it.
Supper sweet,licorice tasting & syrupy.
While in Germany,we would drink a shot of apple schnapps with a beer.
We saw some locals do it so we gave it a try.
At least it was better than the Ouzo, but still super sweet.

When you mix it with water, its not really sweet like schnapps... at least not to me...

In Turkey, the favorite Anise Drink is Raki... it is thick like Ouzo... When you drink it you mix it with water and it goes from clear to a milky white... and it is then called Tiger's Milk... very strong...

Men sit around and drink it... I had a boss once that was from Turkey.. and his dad drank it... he hated it. When his dad came to the USA I met him and we consumed a lot of Tiger's Milk... It was a big male bonding thing and I was accorded lots of respect for hanging with the old man and getting sloshed on Tiger's Milk... a real manly thing... go figure...

It is similar to absinthe except it has no grande wormwood (the source of the thujone)... most connoisseurs would tell you the old absinthe standard is Pernod... although that which is manufactured today is not the same as in the beginning... although the modern version is certainly better made..

It is not all that great to drink.... certainly any quality scotch or bourbon is more pleasurable

I have a buddy that is Greek, and the Ouzo flows. Not too bad, then again Jager can make its way into a glass now and then.

Absente? With the picture of Van Gogh on the bottle?

Re: OT: Absinthe? - 05/24/11 04:42 AM

I've had more than a few rounds with it. There's a local Cigar Bar that makes a killer fruity Absinthe-rita. Considering the cheap stuff is 110 proof, it's a good way to get hammered fast. Shots are NOT the way to do it, unless you like spending the following day crying into a bucket . The Traditional method is easy enough, Sugar cube, cold water, and a bit in the bottom of a glass. I agree, it does take quite some time to start feeling the alcohol this way. Try pouring a small amount into a dish, and placing thinly sliced apple wedges in it until they soak it up. Quite tasty that way.

Oh, one last thing.... Does NOT mix well with Tequila!

I've tried a few brands, Lucid being the most expensive domestic brand. Absente is the cheapest I have around here, about 60$ a bottle. Lucid is more around 80$. A friend of mine made a special trip to Germany and brought a bottle back. Not sure what the proof was (probably stronger than either of the above mentioned brands), but I do know he payed close to 400$ for the bottle... We only sipped that one.

The tequila mixer was on Christmas eve 2 years ago. To this day, anything that tastes like Licorice make me retch . Haven't touched the stuff since. Jager is out of the question too. This is one that if you abuse it once, it'll haunt you for the rest of your life

Re: OT: Absinthe? - 05/26/11 06:24 AM

I'm a fan. I've tried several brands. I tend to be more a fan of the French absinthes. Not a fan of the Czech ones that I have tried.

My favorite (in terms of how often I partake) is actually Francois Guy which would get me some incredulous stares as it's not exactly a connoisseur's pick (to put it mildly). Very low ABV for absinthe (45% I believe). Way too flowery for most peoples' tastes... but I quite enjoy it. You don't need to dilute it or add sugar either, as it's pretty sweet and already low ABV.

I generally import it, however Lucid is not that bad all things considered and it's available most anywhere. It also does not need sugar IMO. I haven't really looked around recently for new brands available in the US.

I also enjoy ouzo from time to time.

Ironically, I hate licorice candy.

Give it a try Dan! I finally ordered a bottle of the Lucid Absinthe. Should get it soon. It equates to 140 proof alcohol so I'll go a little easy on it since it is my first time. It's a bit more potent than my usual Crown Royal or Makers.

Re: OT: Absinthe? - 05/29/11 10:10 PM

I bought a bottle of Hillīs brand absinth. It Czech made and I bought it from Prague. Itīs green coloured and has alcohol 70%vol. so itīs killer stuff! Also the taste is so horrible that I canīt drink it. I really tried once with my friend: first we started with something better tasting and when drunk enough we took the first shots of absinth. Didnīt work out... Iīve also tried those sugar - water - etc tricks but nothing seems to help.

Well, I think Iīm going to pour a slice of Jack Danielīs silver select and enjoy.

It's a sipping drink, and you're supposed to dilute it to get the louche.

I can't imagine doing absinthe shots... yech...

Re: OT: Absinthe? - 06/02/11 09:04 PM

Well, we were in the right mood for drinking it as shots. All the same I donīt recommend it to anyone. Actually I donīt recommend drinking (alcohol) to anyone.

At least alcohol beverages should be drunk in small portions and just one or two portions at a time.

Except in very special occasions.

And birthdays.

And fridays.

Cheers!
