War Dog sheath

War Dog sheath - 05/29/11 05:35 PM

Hi all,

Not a quite a newbie here, but this is my first post. I only discovered the Scrapyard and Swamprat last year but I've already got a collection going on.

I'm pretty stoked about the War Dog and don't want to miss out but I was wondering:

Do any of the Scrapyard sheaths fit the War Dog? I'm buying from the UK so I'd like to get knife and sheath together in one go. I figure that the sheaths aren't made for the WD but wondered if any make a good fit.

Thanks in advance!

Hey just thought I would welcome you to the yard! I dont know about the sheath though as no one except Dan and the crew have handled one.

Re: War Dog sheath - 05/29/11 05:50 PM

Thanks Steeley! It's good to be here.

I guess it is going to be difficult to get an answer as the knife's only just been announced! I really don't want to miss out on this one though, and I wondered if anyone has used the Scrap Yard sheaths and could figure if they'd fit the WD.

Welcome to the yard.

I asked the same question and was informed that there are Dogs here who make sheaths for these knives. Check out rainwalkercreations.com I was impressed with his work.

Re: War Dog sheath - 05/29/11 06:00 PM

I would like to know the same thing. I just received a Ratmandu, and am wondering if it and the War Dog I just ordered will fit in the six inch sheath designed for the Scrapper 6. Anyone know? I already ordered a Kydex sheath for my RMD, but the sheath for the Scrapper 6 looks like a nice option if it fits.

Re: War Dog sheath - 05/29/11 06:04 PM

Hi Pilot, I got a SpecOps sheath for my RMD which works quite well. The Scrap Yard's sheaths are considerably less expensive though and I like to have a sheath for each knife.

Re: War Dog sheath - 05/29/11 06:12 PM

I DON'T KNOW, but here is my 2cents. The 6 inch sheaths would probably work, but would be a sloppy, loose fit. You could MAYBE get a kydex liner specially made for it though.

On a Leather sheath note, the used to be a guy "over the pond" that made really nice holsters, operated under "Horseshoe leather" I think. You might look him up on the interweeb and who knows, he might be just down the road from you.

BTW,WELCOME TO THE YARD! CB Since you've been lurking for a while you know how it operates. glad you joined, now that you are a member, join right in amongst us, grab a bone and get ready to gnaw a while.

Re: War Dog sheath - 05/29/11 06:20 PM

Thanks for the welcome SH!

I was thinking the same about the 6 inch sheath. I've got a BK&T9 that rattles in its own sheath; a knife in a larger sheath is potentially worse.

There are lots of sources for sheaths over here. I personally don't care for leather but I know folks who have good kydex-fu. I kinda like the fabric sheaths though, especially those with pockets on the front.

Welcome. I'd go with a shorter sheath made better for the blade, but that's my two bits.

Claudiasboris

Then by all means get a fabric sheath and then have a kydex insert made for it once you get the blade. ONE source for fabric sheaths is this.

And a few folks recommend this guy.

Thanks for all the kind words and thanks for the cool links, SH, I hadn't seen either of those sites before (cool stuff!).

I got an email from Renee saying that there aren't any sheaths for the WD and Renee will know!

Still, I'm going to have to get a War Dog anyway! I'll worry about pants when she arrives through customs.

Thanks all!

Re: War Dog sheath - 05/30/11 04:00 PM

Thanks for the welcome guys. What a great group!

I would think some of the sheath makers will crank up for this one. Sure a Spec Ops sheath would work too. I'll check with the guy I bought my RMD sheath from and report back. Forget his name or I'd post.

Edit: Just heard back for Renee that the Scrapper 6 will not fit the RMD nor War Dog. Its better to get a sheath designed for the knife anyway, but thought I'd ask as the price is certainly attractive.

Thanks Pilot, that's a good thing to know.

I'm sure that a Spec Ops sheath will fit. I've got one for my RMD so I'll try it out when the WD arrives. Yep, I pulled that trigger last night (that sounds so wrong).

Thanks for all the help and info! I'm going to check out that BOB thread now.

I'm hoping Dan will offer Mashed Cat Kydex sheaths for the War Dog with pricing similar to the Scrapivore sheaths.

I have a Spec Ops sheath that might work, I am hoping at least. Maybe just a heat up of the insert and see what happens.

maybe a kydex insert for piece of mind retention... prob not needed with those tall bushcraft sheaths that leave just the top inch or so exposed

Re: War Dog sheath - 06/05/11 05:39 PM

hey rainwalker your the perfect person to ask this question to, if you don't mind. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I plan on carrying the WD while backpacking, so the butt needs to be below waist level, so I can draw it with a waist belt on, and as to not impede dawning a pack. So i would guess that would bring one to a "dangler" but I feel it may "dangle" to darn much and be annoying, leg retention is an option, but not one i really care for... maybe trad. fold w/ a higher belt loop?

what do you think?

Go to Rainwalker's kydex pricing page. You should think about the SKDL or SKDS.
http://sites.google.com/site/rainwalkercreations/kydex-prices
I use several and really like them.

Another idea is to use Blade Tech Molle Loks.

I apologgize for not reading your question to Rainwalker very clearly the first time, so my input should be changed a little.

Still, I have significant experience to provide decent advice.

For backpacking with a pack with a "serious" hipbelt, I definitely suggest the molle loks from Blade Tech. I would then attach the sheath to the hipbelt or a shoulder strap depending on the size of the knife and its intended/expected use.

If/when you remove the pack and still want the knife on your waistline, the sheath is easy to remove from the pack and put on your belt.

NOTE: The same method can be accomplished with a Tek-Lok or a Tek-Lok in conjunction with a Rainwalker SKDS if the Tek-Lok will accommodate the webbing/belt.

One more thing: If you are concerned with retention with a kydex sheath, paracord and cordlock(s) can be rigged for most knives to prevent knife loss. I loop a length of cord through the sheath rivet(s), knot it, and run it through a cordlock or two (or use a knot in place of one of the cordlocks. Then the paracord can be tightened around the handle (of most knives) to prevent the knife from comeing out. I also use this method with various cordura and leather sheaths for retention in addition to a snap or as a replacement for velcro.

Re: War Dog sheath - 06/06/11 11:32 PM

thanks for the reply! I had thought of doing something similar but i would really like to have it on my belt at all times, i would think this method of carry would be a bit more common do most people just move them around like that?
Posted By: BillyJoeBobJim

Re: War Dog sheath - 06/07/11 02:09 AM

Moving it around is not the most fun thing for sure, but I cannot stand having something under the hipbelt pressing into me.

That would leave me with soft webbing which screws up the draw from kydex (which has retention) which then requires leg retention. Neither you nor I care for leg retention.

Maybe you can get Rainwalker to make you something with an ultra-slim kydex belt-loop so that it will not bother you when under the hipbelt.
