Busse 5160?

Busse 5160? - 07/16/11 05:53 AM

Alright, I admit it. I broke down and bought a Ranger Rd-9 that was made from a Busse blank (there's the bussekin tie in Klink <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> ). Looks a lot like a Mistress.

But that's unimportant to the post right now. My primary question deals with the Busse blank that is made of 5160 steel. Can anyone speak to what exactly Busse's 5160 steel was? I understand that Justin bought the lot of 700 that Jerry offered up years ago, but that's all I know. Was it given the Busse heat treat? Was this ever used on any bussekin offerings? Inquiring minds want to know. Gracias!

And yes, SF, I have a problem <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/sad.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> It's my birthday present <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Word is I'm hitting the road in about an hour or so. And you don't need pics SF. I'm sure you'll be over fondling my new knife before I even get to see it <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

Still hoping someone can shed some light on this steel <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

I've had two of the original Ranger Busse blank models, both were RD7's. I believe I read Justin did the heat treatment but I cant be sure but either way they are great and strong knives I used them alot.
Nice score!!
Here a pic of the two Busse Blanks I had b4 they were used. Reminds me of the old SH's!

I'm only messin buddy. I would say that 5160 would fall smack between S7(SR77)and 51200( SR101). It would likely chip out quicker than SR77 but not as easily as SR101 and it would hold an edge longer than SR77 but not as well as SR101.

5160 is a great all round steel especially on larger knives. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />
