Yard Fishing Thread - 06/16/12 04:26 AM

I had a nice weekend last week with my son and thought about a dedicated fishing thread before the Yard went kaput!

While not quite as impressive as Steelnut's threads fishing fun comes in all kinds of shapes and sizes! Last week the boy discovered how to up his number of fish caught...

[Linked Image from i432.photobucket.com]

That means dad is taking off sunfish every two to three minutes...and he's happy with that.

[Linked Image from i432.photobucket.com]

[Linked Image from i432.photobucket.com]

And being out always means a lot more...never saw a turtle laying eggs-

[Linked Image from i432.photobucket.com]

Went out to a nearby steam and found this. Got deer around every corner here in CT and never found an antler either!

[Linked Image from i432.photobucket.com]

With a fishing companion of mine- the Weiner Dog..one of my most loved knives.

[Linked Image from i432.photobucket.com]

Getting out is just great and giving my Alejandro new expereinces is even better!

Hows about adding your pics for the season all?

Great pics! Looks like you guys had a great time.
I went spearfishing last weekend, but caught ZERO
But I will get some next time!

Great pics RN, and your son should remember that for a LONG time!

My son and son-in-law both will be up here next month with their kids, and we plan on fishing ourselves!

Re: Yard Fishing Thread - 06/16/12 01:53 PM

Well congratulations on your family getting to visit Tom. Pond raised fish are pretty good. Patty and I need to hit up her brothers lake again one of these days when it isn't to hot.

Re: Yard Fishing Thread - 06/29/12 12:09 AM

Hey brother, IT DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THAT!!!! Remember that you are living in the "good old days" while your kids are that size!!

And it doesn't matter how big the fish are. I will bait hooks and take those little sunfish off all day if the kids are having fun.

Good job dad!!!

Doc

Oh, and you know some people call those little guys "tinkle-on-ya's". If you hold them with your hand over the dorsal fin and squeeze, they make pretty interesting squirt guns!!

Re: Yard Fishing Thread - 07/15/12 03:07 PM

nice pics!

Been doing a lot of fishing this last few months. Pretty much just learning since I haven't fished since I was a kid and never did much back then. But man I got the bug pretty bad now. It's crazy how much you can enjoy something you completely suck at . I'm usually a really patient person but man I can get amped up when I'm not catching anything, which is every day. But that's what keeps me learning and working on my process. I'm seeing some huge fish in my favorite spot but they are ignoring everything I throw at them. All I do is point and say "one day, one day...".

Its beautiful scenery and even though I may not catch anything I enjoy watching the gators try to creep up on frogs. Will try to get some pics the next time I go out....

Re: Yard Fishing Thread - 07/15/12 07:06 PM

Thanks guys...definite differences between fishing and catching, no?! ha haaa!

This was our last trip...friend said there are killer bass here, but all we pulled in after an almost hour hike were shiners...this is a pic after he kissed it. He was happy.

[Linked Image from i432.photobucket.com]

We had a long hike in and out and saw all kinds of wildlife which we both loved. Here's a poor picture of a Scarlet Tanager which are rare for CT. Very pretty bird!

Go ahead and admit, he spanked you in the size contest.

Re: Yard Fishing Thread - 07/15/12 11:20 PM

nice PK!

so far caught a around 3 pound bass and a small but tasty breakfast sized bream... everything else has been me practicing on how not to loose lures. i'm needing more practice...

mentioned this in another thread but i've lost so many lures the last few weeks i'm trying harder to keep a lure than to catch a fish. last trip out i snagged a lure and was so determined to get my lure that i broke my pole. despite the fact that i broke my pole my lure actually came loose in the end. now why i felt a bit victorious sacrificing a decent pole for a $1.00 fake minnow I will never know. it's the most expensive lure i have now though.

My son in law caught the big fish of the day today; an 8#9oz. catfish! We caught a lot of smaller bass and some bluegills, but Tim took the top honor today.

Re: Yard Fishing Thread - 07/16/12 06:01 PM

Plastic worm cast right near the shoreline, and slowly crawled toward the boat. My son in law's catfish was also caught on a plastic worm. The three lures that work best on my pond are beetle-spins, plastic worms, and zara spook lures. My son really tears em' up with the zara spooks!

Re: Yard Fishing Thread - 07/16/12 08:20 PM

okay. for bass i like my bright green mepps spinners and rapala husky jerks. i come from a family of fisherman and love the challenge of getting a big bass to bite on a fake lure.
Posted By: Private Klink

Re: Yard Fishing Thread - 07/18/12 12:40 AM

I always liked Mepps spinners and "stick baits" when fishing up in Minnesota and Wisconsin, but they would get hung up too easily in my pond. I need another trip to the North Woods! ...

Re: Yard Fishing Thread - 07/18/12 01:10 AM

yeah pond fishing in the summer requires lots of weedless set ups. my fav i you take a yum frog or similar and put one large weedless hook in. then you take a treble hook and cut off one barb and insert the shaft and eye of the trebble hook up the frogs bum and put the weedless hook through the eye of the treble and they are hooked together and the frog is really good for weeds and such.

Re: Yard Fishing Thread - 07/18/12 05:05 AM

My pond fishing partners have gone home. I have lily pads around the pond this year, and a frog would have been a good choice as has been proven in the past. Topwater action is great!!!

Re: Yard Fishing Thread - 07/27/12 08:09 PM

ahhh... another morning of fishing!

or as I'm going to start calling it, "tossing every lure you own in the middle of the lake or up into a tree somewhere, or find random things you cant see under the water to snag you line on over and over and over again, or break another brand new rod and while your at it be sure to catch absolutely nothing while watching fish activity pretty everywhere that you aren't."

fish roll right up to the bank and hang out all day just to watch my fails like its that show wipe out. not even afraid of me cause they know I couldnt catch them if I was to dump the whole lake through a giant strainer.

so yup, another great day of all that...

so thinking I'll be heading back first thing in the morning...

Re: Yard Fishing Thread - 07/27/12 08:12 PM

Alright, just a typical day of fishing then. Beware though, for one day you will catch a catfish, and you might get horned! Or you will go to grab that nice bass or crappie and get stuck with the dorsal fin. All fun and games called fishing.

Re: Yard Fishing Thread - 07/27/12 08:15 PM

When I was stationed in Idaho, I jumped in the snake river to recover a crappie that was as big as my hands put together. I be that sucker was 8 inches top to bottom, close to a foot long and thick bodied! Boy was he tasty!

Re: Yard Fishing Thread - 08/04/12 01:05 AM

decent sized bream and small mouth bass today... also hooked a tiny bream, a tiny catfish, and a tiny large mouth bass. missed more than a few cause I was wondering off but will head out again in the morning. going to try to keep hooks in the water at the two active most active spots and maybe try 2 hooks on one line.

always something going on around this tree. but if you look in the distance... yup, a boat would be sweet... all trees and turns swamp like in some parts back in there. will take pics next time...

With a Legering rod, 0,24 line fishing (but you use some other measures),
around 14 oz line, mais.

Re: Yard Fishing Thread - 08/05/12 09:52 PM

wow! nice catch rugos!

I'm with skunk on this one... I'll toss back little guys and crazy big old guys so the genes survive. anything in between comes out the water and goes on the menu...

still learning this stuff but just read that buffalo is a carp. the one I've been seeing troll the bank every morning looks to be a bit smaller than yours rugos. my guess is well over 6 pounds and seeing yours makes me think he's in the 8-9 pound range maybe. yesterday I fished the lake behind where I normally fish and saw some nice ones is there. saw a couple that had looked well over 10 pounds come close to the surface. they seems to stay fairly active when nothing else stopped biting. it's pretty easy to locate them with the bubbles and mud swells the kick up. I think I'm going to set up a couple rigs and try for them in the next few times I go out.

what type of rig do you guys use for carp?

Re: Yard Fishing Thread - 08/09/12 12:40 PM

I am jealous. Being down this summer has only afforded me two trips to the water--both times off docks for catfish/bass/crappie/ and sand bass. Limited success both times.

When I was a kid we would sell carp and buffalo's to this old guy who would pressure cook the fish, meat fall off the bone and he would make carp balls, etc. I never got the nerve to try them.

I used to do a lot of bow fishing for carp and gar, especially when they were in the shallows for reproducing. Too many carp in a body of water is bad, but some is good for keeping vegetation down.

You guys are lucky to be fishing, enjoy it because if something happens and you can't get out and do it the memories will carry over!

Re: Yard Fishing Thread - 08/10/12 02:59 AM

think rugos forgot...

I saw some carp rigs online and though I was going to find the balls at BP. no luck... guess I will look for a recipe.

I wonder how they would feel about spear fishing out there. fish get so close to the bank early in the morning it would be pretty easy.

nice fish! looks like your kids enjoy catching some good eats.

i like to use rooter tails when can but we always seem to have too much stuff in the water here. only a matter or time before you end up loosing it. and it's pretty much a guarantee something will snag it. i may end up trying some weedless hooks on them when it gets warmer.

right now i'm thinking jigging with a bobber is going to get me a lot better results than a tight line.

Caught about 25-30 catfish on Sunday evening in about 2 1/2 hours. Best evening I ever had for catfish. They were on the small side, but I brought home my limit of 6 decent sized ones.

Gonna go back Thursday evening and try them again.

Re: Yard Fishing Thread - 06/08/13 02:45 AM

Just to follow up, went back Thursday and my wife and I brought back 15 eating size cats, and probably threw back 30 more that were too small. Not a bad day at all.

You believe these little things hit big spinners?! My son cracked me up with these. He's been into state record and world record fish lately and says "Do you think this is a world record for a small bass?" lol! I said "certainly could be!"

This sunnie was funny too...his drag loosened up a ton and it took almost 2 minutes to see this thing...I was all "Must have a bass Alejandro, it's a fighter!" lmao!

[Linked Image from i432.photobucket.com]

He was into it though...woke up at 5 am all by himself so we could go. I dropped a nice bass at one point. Arrghhh!! Was a beauty of a day here after that tropical storm passed us.

Re: Yard Fishing Thread - 08/08/13 01:58 AM

had a really odd thing happen today. fished from about 12pm-7pm today. from about 12 to 5 the bites were painfully slow and i had one tiny little bluegill. changed everything about the setup during those 5 hours. hook, weights, swivels, and bobbers. I fished every depth from a foot to six feet and hooked the bait several different ways. the guy fishing to the right of me was consistently landing fish. think he got 25 for the day which isn't odd for him. I finally decided to switch rigs and on the first cast i got a bite but missed. i eventually landed a couple fish and continued to get bites from then on but didn't land anything else.

since i set up everything the same and got bites at the distance i was normally fishing I can only guess one thing. the big fish didn't like the line I was using. it was mr. crappie 8# camo line. never noticed any problems with this line anywhere else but these fish just seem to not bite on it for whatever reason. literally let a cricket float up to the bank and nothing touched it. as soon as i switched over to a reel with 6# hi-viz line i was telling a guy the fish don't like my crickets. right when I said that i got a bite.

live and learn... no more crickets on the camo line....

Re: Yard Fishing Thread - 08/15/13 11:02 AM

Max lives! wink What up?!

Alejandro doesn't need a lot of outside encouragement thankfully, he loves nature and all kinds of wildlife. At summer camp one of the younger counselors was a hardcore fisherman and was impressed with all the boy knows.

We are off to NH in a few hours and hoping to hit the lake fishing hard! We aren't really set up for deeper water fishing, but hopefully we'll luck into some bigger trout/salmon, but I'm sure we'll hit the bass hard!

Re: Yard Fishing Thread - 08/15/13 11:16 AM

Well good luck! And have fun.
Posted By: RN

Re: Yard Fishing Thread - 08/19/13 12:35 PM

Got Back from NH and was a nice trip. I didn't do well fishing...lots of dropped fish and I didn't land a single bass! Arrgghh...did have a nice one on and almost got beaned in the head by the lure when it tossed it a few feet away from me- that was hilarious!

But with scenery like this...it's nice just being out...

[Linked Image from i432.photobucket.com]

Saw Loons a bunch- a very pretty bird with a cool call. We don't have them in CT ( I don't think) so they are a treat...

[Linked Image from i432.photobucket.com]

The kids enjoyed this of course! My little girl Ana caught her 1st fish...biggest perch I've seen. She was thrilled (the fish less so- gut hooked...fishing with kids!)

[Linked Image from i432.photobucket.com]

My Alejandro fished a ton. We had high hopes for something interesting like a larger trout or even salmon, but he had fun, got his first pickerel and tons of sunfish. He just loves being out and in nature.

[Linked Image from i432.photobucket.com]

[Linked Image from i432.photobucket.com]

[Linked Image from i432.photobucket.com]

Even my wife did a little fishing! This is my sister's dock...

[Linked Image from i432.photobucket.com]

This is about the biggest sunfish i"ve caught..sucker was a porker! Who is uglier- fish or me? Tough call...lol...

[Linked Image from i432.photobucket.com]

This was my most interesting catch- I didn't even know we had black crappie in New England. Interesting fish! Went after a large lure and the pic doesn't show how hefty it was...was a thick fish that was easily 2 lbs plus. Alejandro was stocked to use the net! Weiner Dog to help with size reference.

[Linked Image from i432.photobucket.com]

[Linked Image from i432.photobucket.com]

One week of vaca down..one to go! Will be less fishing this week, but hopefully we'll get out some more...

Re: Yard Fishing Thread - 09/05/13 08:28 PM

i decided i'm going after some big fish for the next month or so. so far I've hooked a couple but for some reason my line isn't holding up. don't know what size fish I had but yesterday i got the "zzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ" i have been looking for. this fish covered a lot of ground in a short time. unfortunately my 30# braided line snapped right when I tightened up my drag and began to reel it in. almost like the fish had scrapper on him. i could stomped a hole in the ground I was so mad!

i dont know for sure but it actually might been an alligator. I'm stumped.. i just can see 30# braid giving up a fish that easy.

found 3 spots along the river to fish. this is where i will most likely find fish over 20lbs. i need to get my line rigging down and hopefully i will have some biguns in after a while.

Been a terriblestart to fishing here, but finally did better today. Alejandro landed this guy and played him perfectly. My little girl had on back to back monsters we didn't land, but it was hilarious watching her and brother fight them. She kept saying "I'm on fire!" lol

They had a few others one too. Nice morning and good to have some action finally!

Rich, time out with your kids is time that you will cherish for all the days of your life. Times that will remain forever priceless.

Luck has nothing to do with it, but a mortgage DOES! wink

That explains it then. We have NO mortgage, NO vehicle payment, NO credit card payment... You get the Idea. Maybe that's why we don't have a pond. Then again it would be difficult to have a nice fishing size pond on a city lot that is 100x150 feet. smile

That is a Spyderco Sprig...cool knife, had some trouble removing the tail and head though. Going to have to bring more home and compare it to the Weiner Dog.
