Patty the Shutterbug - 08/10/12 12:23 PM
OK, some of you folks have said that you enjoy seeing Patty's Mingo (and other) pictures. So instead of having them all over the place I decided to start this thread.
Other Mods and Administrators, If you think this is inappropriate please let me know and I will take it down.
Let's start off with the Photographer, Patty the Shutterbug!
Now on to the first picture. Here is a pic we got alongside a major Highway several years ago. He had just taken off from a branch about 50 feet off the highway.
More pictures will follow.

And here is perhaps one of the greatest pictures ever taken. The picture went from the camera to the computer, with NO editing whatsoever. Patty didn't even know she had this good a picture of it until she was downloading to the computer. About 30 seconds later it was gone. It was taken in March of 2010.
The outline of the bird is almost perfect.

Re: Patty the Shutterbug - 08/12/12 04:08 PM
I am seriously thinking about getting Patty a new camera for Christmas or her birthday (Jan 25th). She has been talking about Nikons. Right now her camera is a Canon EOS Xs with the 75-300mm lens.
I want to upgrade her to something better and I HOPE I can find something better (Camera and lens) for about $1000-1200 dollars. Most of her pics are between 20-300 feet, some of course farther and a few shorter.
What would be a good Camera, NIKON first and then Another Canon with lens recommendations?

If she has more than the one Canon lens, I recommend staying with Canon. Sell the old body, get a new one and continue the lens collection.
If she only has the one lens, sell both the lens and body and get a Nikon if that is what she is set on.
If the budget you mention, $1,000 to $1,200, is for a kit (body and lens), you cannot go wrong with a Nikon D7000. Check out a review
here.
With a bit of searching, I just found a D7000, 18-105mm lens and tons of other goodies in a kit for $1,250. You can probably find it for less with just the lens and body. The 18-105mm lens will be a good starter lens as well since it has a wide zoom range. But, you give up a little on the aperture - 3.5 is the largest hole it'll make. There is also a kit with a 70-300mmm lens, which should make the transition less abrupt. It is probably the better one too, since she does a lot of nature photos.
The D90 is a small step down, but you can save a few pennies with it. I used to have one, and loved it. I got rid of it to change formats not because I had any issues with it.

Re: Patty the Shutterbug - 08/15/12 09:38 AM
Thank you MonsterDog. Yeah having a face to put with the posts does add something.
Thank you JJ. I had thought the D7000 was way out of our league.
She has the Canon EOS Xs and the standard 18(or28)mm to 55mm lens plus the 55-300mm for the Canon. She would keep it as a second (backup) camera.

Re: Patty the Shutterbug - 08/17/12 03:41 PM
Right now I have a military web belt set up with two one quart canteens. There is enough room between them for my 2 quart canteen If I want to carry it too. I also have a camelback style 2 liter style water carrier but wouldn't want to carry that if I had the versapack. It I had (or get) the SS bottle, either the 40 or 64 ounce, it would go on the web belt and if I got the 64 it would replace both the 1 quart bottles.

Re: Patty the Shutterbug - 08/17/12 03:41 PM
You might want to check their gearslinger range, backpaks with diagonal strap so you don't have to take off to get into. And if you ask around here someone might have one they want to let go...
Posted By: SkunkHunter
Re: Patty the Shutterbug - 08/17/12 03:43 PM
I've seen a couple gear slinger packs and just didn't care all that much for them. I thought at first I would love them, but I like the Murse concept better.
Posted By: elof_alv
Re: Patty the Shutterbug - 08/17/12 03:49 PM
I switched to the bag for week days because the Kodiak was pretty much empty. But now I started to take food with me and the EDC bag is too small on some days
Plus with the gearslingers you can attach things to them, like the bottle carier, they all have one 'built in'. Or you can put a bladder in the back compartment...

Re: Patty the Shutterbug - 08/27/12 10:14 AM
And here is perhaps one of the greatest pictures ever taken. The picture went from the camera to the computer, with NO editing whatsoever. Patty didn't even know she had this good a picture of it until she was downloading to the computer. About 30 seconds later it was gone. It was taken in March of 2010.
The outline of the bird is almost perfect.
OMG, that is my favorite pic now. Ask Patty if I can use it as my screen saver <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

If we ever have to boogie, this is where we plan on heading. It' close to 3/4 mile off a not so major road and if you don't see the "Lane" that leads to it you will never find it. Oh and the exit off the road can be camouflaged VERY easily.
About 12 miles away, 3-4 acres in water with a small cabin. The lake belongs to my brother-in-law.

In ancient Roman times, this would have been a sign to get ready for war. Hopefully this is not the case, not going to go into the reasons but Randy you know the way I am not PC. Guess it could be interpolated that it is the current economic climate too but I will leave well enough alone-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Re: Patty the Shutterbug - 01/10/13 11:13 AM
OK, first a confession. We didn't get each other anything for our Anniversary or Christmas. And with Patty's birthday coming up in a couple weeks I got her something she has been wanting a LONG time. A NICE camera outfit. We got it Monday and can already tell a difference in her pictures. Just for those curious dogs, here is what she got.
Pentax K5 IIs DSLR with a Sigma 18-250mm Macro lens. It isn't a Cannon or Nikon, but I had an OLD Pentax SP500 for 30 years and it was an EXCELLENT camera. This one seems like it will carry on the tradition. I hope you like the Pictures.
Snow geese and some old fart just for perspective.
Squirrel with a nut in his mouth.
I sure hope he doesn't try to smoke that grape vine.
Looking for something to eat.
It was a completely overcast day, and the pictures were not as dark on the computer at home, but for some reason they appear darker here. I hope you enjoyed them because she REALLY enjoyed taking them. Oh BTW, the owl was about 30 feet away from us about 8-9 feet up in a tree.

OK, there's a reason for this. It was on the fender of the truck. She used a 18-250mm lens and took it at almost full zoom. Oh she was about a foot away.

Gotta scratch that itch.

Well Patty got a few more pics today so here we go. Let's start at the ground and work our way up.
Don't know what kind this is but Patty must have ate his lunch cause he came after her.
Kinda shy and hard to get. Maybe he was trying to get a feel for whether he will see his shadow or not.
I know I said Ground Up, but hey the water is surrounded by ground.
Ok, one more. A close up of yesterdays shot.

Re: Patty the Shutterbug - 01/29/13 04:28 AM
OK, let's aim a little higher. Same day. I know it's blurry but we were moving as well. I think it is awesome though, just look at the wingtip feathers.
Main point of focus is a Juvenile Snow Goose.
Most of the Juveniles were on one side of the road and the adults were on the other side.
Just a little farther down the field.
There were thousands and thousands of these Snow Geese, on both sides of the County road. I have NEVER seen so many in one spot.

This just in! The first actual "ZOMBIE" was spotted in Southeast Missouri Sunday. Fortunately the Zombie was fully DE-animated. It is not known Exactly where this creature was discovered but it is highly suspected that it came from a prominent Eastern city on the Potomac river.
At the risk of life and limb, our intrepid photographer "Patty the Shutterbug" was able to obtain this closeup picture before being accosted by two "Men in Black"
Although unable to obtain photographic evidence, our photographer did state that she saw a card with the name "Diane Fei, and the rest being blotted out by dried blood.

And of course one of everybody's favorite birds, the Turkey Vulture.
Ben Franklin's pick for our national bird. Out of focus, but they were flying fast and furious!
Another one of DT's relatives, and it looks like he found something to eat.
These guys decided to surge skyward
Maybe they were trying to get away from this guy.

Re: Patty the Shutterbug - 04/04/14 07:19 PM
It HAD to happen sooner or later.
The feral swine problem at Mingo has taken an unexpected twist. While conducting fisheries surveys, the staff at Mingo collected multiple examples of what are believed to be a hybrid between carp and swine. These fish were heard making a squealing noise as they wallowed in the shallows. After the sampling effort was completed, the staff took an opportunity to cook one of the hybrids. The report was that it tasted like bacon.

Pentax K3 with a Pentax 55-300 zoom.

Re: Patty the Shutterbug - 04/20/14 07:07 AM
We can already tell a difference between this one and her old outfit. All I need to get her now is a good Macro lens. The lens on her old outfit (Pentax K5 IIs) is a Sigma 18-250 macro, but a dedicated lens for flowers and stuff would really be nice.

Nice she gets great close ups with them.
I run a Nikon with an 18-55 and a 55-300.
I also want a macro the 18-55 is ok but still not great and some day when I win the lotto something that zooms to 800 would be nice.

Re: Patty the Shutterbug - 04/20/14 07:38 AM
It would really be nice. Probably 99 percent of the pictures she takes are from the truck. We just drive around Mingo and if she sees something she tells me to stop and the camera goes out the window and it's snap snap snap.

Patty ALMOST always takes hers with her. Now we just got to find her a good Macro lens. Pentax will work of course, but I really want that SIGMA 105mm Macro for her. UNFORTUNATELY they say they don't have any plans on making it for the Pentax mount. It's about a 62mm Objective where the Pentax is 49mm.

Big Springs state park in Van Buren Missouri.
At an average daily flow of 286 million gallons of water, Big Spring is an awesome sight and a geologic wonder. Underground passages carry water from as far as 45 miles away to emerge at the spring. Studies have shown that the water is carrying a load of dissolved limestone equivalent to 70 tons a day! This dissolved rock gives the spring its color and is also carving out a huge conduit underground. Should the spring ever go dry, a huge cave will be the result.
