Learning to coyote hunt

Learning to coyote hunt - 04/07/13 06:04 AM

I just got permission to hunt a large farm in my area and they have gaint coyotes. I have a shotgun buck shot and a old rabbit screech call from a uncle.
What advice and tips could I get from a few if you yote hunters?

Hunting coyotes with a shotgun can be great fun, with the right set up. But they can sneak in quick. Sit back to back with a partner or have terrain that will direct them toward towards you from up wind.

Hooker is right. I've been much more successful when I hunt with a partner. I don't hunt with a shotgun, I use a rifle. But, somethings may apply.

A couple of other things that I've learned along the way:

Use you range finder BEFORE the action starts. Pre-range the path you think they'll be using as we'll as other points.

Hitting a running coyote is possible, but very tough at long range. If the spot you and take off, keep him in your cross hairs and follow him. If they feel safe they will often slow to a trot and even stop for a few seconds and look back before they take off again. I've killed a few during that pause.

If your using an electronic call, be ready to switch to "wounded coyote" because I've had quite a few stop in their tracks even if they've lost interest or bust me.

A good pair of binoculars is a must. Yotes have great senses, so seeing them from a distance before they get close allows you time to adjust and prepare before they are close enough to see/hear/smell.
you.

Coyotes learn quickly. Don't use the same call in the same stand too often or they will take off the minute they hear your call.

Thanks guys. I have a relative with a electronic caller that I'm going to see if I can use it
And now I need to find a partner. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

What hours of the day do you seem to have the best luck getting them to come in?

I've had them come in at all hours, but I've found that at dawn and dusk they seem to respond more.

If you are in an area where you can night hunt, coyotes are really brave at night. You need the right equipment, though.

Good advice there. I wish we could hunt them at night here--reason to get some night vision.

We check NVG out from the local reserve base every now and then. Makes things fun.

NVG is a lot of fun!!!!

And I do understand the move up to a rifle but a shotgun can be very useful. Slug will do a job on a yote, not good for saving the pelt but they stink so bad that the pelt is useless to me.

We have a young State Trooper here that just put together a 22.250 rig to hunt them with.

I´ve read from the interweb that some hunters find the Remington Slugster high velocity slugs workin well in smooth bore shotguns.

Use a partner, Calling them in is easy if they haven't been hunted before.

A moving decoy helps just put it where it will draw attention away from you and in a shooting lane.

Make your own decoy for a few bucks instead of buying one.

A 2 person back to back one with a shotgun the other with a rilfe works. Once you take one wait. There is often a second or third coming right behind it.

MB gave some good advise. If you have the caller and decoy right next to you, the 'yotes zero in and run right at you. If you move, they'll spot you. At least set the decoy (could be something as simple as a feather on a string tied to a stick) a ways away from you to draw their attention away.

You may try baiting too. We've done that with some success.

This time of year it's tough to get them to come out.
