Hunting Dogs - Wild Boar - 01/20/14 05:36 PM

Hello,

I just bought a new pup for Boar hunting next year. His father is 140 pound muscle dog. I was wondering if anyone has hunted wild boar with a Cane Corso? I as told this is the best breed.
Tell me what you think. The father is here on the homepage...The mother is also a hunting dog you can see them on this site Cane Corso Puppies For Sale http://sanroccocanecorso.com

if anyone has this breed please share photos.

Pete

Californiacatchers.com

Dogo Argentino

Cane corso's are great dogs. However from what I have seen every one seems to breed for aesthetic purposes NOT for hunting. I'm sure if you do your part you can turn him into a good catch dog just make sure you do your research on maturity because my Dogo is seven months old and she still thinks everything is a game. My girls game pit/Bull terrier /GSP is three months old and that little guy is like a Alligator with drive and focus for days!

It's all personal preference when it comes to hog dogs. Some use Catahoulas American bulldogs, "GAME" bred pit bulls, Alaphala bulldogs, Patterdales, Jagd Terriers, Dogos and the list goes on..... just depends on how many dogs you run and if you want Bay dogs, catch dogs, or trailing dogs.

A guy that I ran across a few years ago was using Rhodesian Ridgebacks as a chase/pursuit dog. If I were to use dogs to hunt wild pigs, I want something that can handle an attack.

Agreed Sumo. I really like the Ridge Backs too for their stubbornness to back down.

We have a few clients with Cane's. Awesome dogs, can be quite intimidating, but my worry with hogs is their quickness. Cane's are incredibly strong and more than fast enough once they get going, but in tight I am afraid they would get torn up. They are just so big. The (regular) pits are so quick. They can avoid alot of injuries that a larger dog probably wouldn't be able to. I have repaired some horrendous wounds inflicted by those porkers and the four switch blades that they carry. I would ease him into it and make sure ge is ready for the big leagues!

Vests are a great in"vest"ment especially for big dogs. Like you said they can't get out of the way fast enough., and the are too heavy to just be lifted away with out injury.
