Brood 13 starts Today! - 05/22/07 09:36 PM

The 17 year cicada emergence starts today! omg, it's gonna get loud. I remember the last one, and friends told me about how it was around their neck of the woods, so it would be interesting to hear from you peeps on how "LOUD" it's getting by you and if you have any good locust recipes! (YUK)

I watched a show on em just a week ago. Apparantly they crawl out, mate, and then get eaten. It seems they are doomed to be food for every carnivore in the forest and the ones that escape being eaten die and are fertilizer for the trees. Nature has some interesting plans Here in Oregon Nature has provided a way to thin the forest by creating Scrap Yard knives which are then used by cut happy folks like myself

It's a Cicada Dave. You know those bugs in the trees that make that buzzing sound in the summer! Their attacking this year!

As a survival food I'd bet cicada's are great nutrition. I'm sure they would need some seasoning salt or tabasco though

Tabasco would work for me. It makes just about anything edible

Ohh no, you can hold them! but they tend to try and fly away, "buzz" in your hand and the first time that happens it freaks you out!

man I would have to be reallyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy hungry!!

A friend of mine ate three of them last Saturday. Two with me and one a a bbq. He took the wings off, said it was sick if they had wings. I told him it was sick either way. He said that they crunched like a potato chip but had a nutty flavor.... There goes the tastes like chiken theory!

Anyway, that Monday he had a fire drill at work and in the parking lot he ate another one, in his suit with manager and guest standing everywhere.

1. He is all out for attention!

2. I try not to hang out with him socially! He is strictly for cigars and hiking. I wonder why?

I don't think the buzz is as bad as when they grab hold of you (like a monster junebug)

I've heard of people eating them. I've heard the Cherokee gather them as they emerge, fry'em and eat'em.

I'd try it once if it's prepared right...

But then again my mom used to say I'd eat anything that wasn't movin too fast for me...

The shell is a dime a piece at Chinese Medicine shop. The use: antihistamine properties or dermaticus healing properties I think.

WD, you have a golden opportunity to generate cash here. At $0.10 per shell that could add up.

Just came accross another use. Living jewelery. Apparently the rage now is to take a roach and put in on a chain and pin it to your lapel. You can bling it with nail polish too! Glue some sequins on the bastards and you might get $10 per bug.

when I was a teen, I found a tree with giant stink beetles (chemical smell) they were beautiful florescent blues, greens, reds and I tied a sewing thread around their armor necks, flew all around my body like a toy plane, the locals thought I was nuts!
