SAK questions (kind of)

SAK questions (kind of) - 04/03/08 01:01 AM

I am currently looking for a SAK type knife, with a saw blade.
I seem to remember, years back, Brigade Quartermaster selling a German Army knife, which had a nice size main blade, as well as a saw blade.
What I want is:
-not puny main blade
-saw blade
-awl
-inexpensive.

Any help would be appreciated. It seems there are 234232 versions of the SAK, made by everyone under the sun. Way too much choice for a simple rooikat to comprehend.

maybe your thinking of the GAK (german army knife).

a sweet popular one that fits your every needs is the; OHT (One Hand Trekker);
it is 111mm bigger than the regular ones (91mm), fits nice in your hand bro.

and if you don't like the serrations (I normally don't but on this their not bad, notice their position)
they have a PE version out or just about out.

Check out the selection at www.bladematrix.com

I can't comment on their shipping charges as I live an hour away from their storefront. Pretty decent prices on SAK's, though.

The green handled OHT (#VNS4876) sells for $29.38.
The black handled OHT (#VNS884) sells for $25.00.

camping scrappy or camper? if it's the camper the blade may be to small for him, he wanted something with a bigger main blade, the 91mm may be a tad small for Roo's big godzilla claws/needs!

What about the leatherman surge?
You can replace the saw and choose between wood and metal one. Some small electric saws have the same attachment, so there are a lot of saws to choose ( for length and teeth ).

I have a victorinox, and the saw is stiffer than the leatherman one.But the Surge is more versatile ( and I like the plain and serrated blades )

without more angles I'd guess it's a rucksack, picnicker, or hercules? it is a 111 mm.

Or possibly a "Fireman?"

I have the Fireman (black scales) and it boasts an additional rounded/curved seat-belt cutter with shallow serrations. While I don't cut too many seat- belts, it is handy for fuzz sticks and great for using with a firesteel so as to not screw up the main spear-point (locking) blade.

as for the OHT, i've head that the thumb hole is hard on the hand when using the saw, but I don't own one myself. Mine is, I believe, the "tinker" though it says "officer" on the blade. Perhaps the name was changed. I also have a small one that I bought in Switzerland, so it has funky things that aren't on the american ones haha

Viva the OHT. I have the OHT and a GAK. I like the looks of the GAK better, but the functionality of the OHT better. Not sure why but the OHT feel better built. I have about 40 some SAK's and my all time favorites are the alox Farmer and the Mauser. I am a sucker for alox.

I guess if you were using it all day! and why would you do such a thing?! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif" alt="" />
I used it for a few jobs and had no problem. it fit fine, more pressure was under my thumb because I was pushing slightly down then on my forefinger, which I use more for balance/yaw then pressure.
