Recomend me a surefire. - 07/25/08 07:05 AM

Well I have used the Mini-Mag for a long time and have finally dicided to take the step up to surefire.
My requirements...
Not plastic bodies(had one of these and it was ruined when it got wet)
Not to small
At least 15 hours of bat life
Durable

Thanks

The A2 Aviator seems to be real popular with the flashlight guys.

Yeah I looked at that.

I almost bought a executive elite awhile back, didn't know it only had a hour of bat life.

Think the outdoorsman should be good.

You have a surefire right.

Re: Recomend me a surefire. - 07/25/08 12:36 PM

i have a G2,P6 and E2L OUTDOORSMAN.

i really cant say enough good about the E2L.mine is an older one with only one setting of 45 lumens with a 14hr run time.

i just love it.use it constantly.its been banged around a bit and had some pretty good drops on hard surfaces with no problems.

when i get the LED conversions for the G2 and 6P maybe i will use them but until then they collect dust.i usually need between 4-5 hours of light.not the 1 hour they produce and their incandescent bulbs burn out very quickly as well and are more fragile since they contain gasses in the bulb.

if you really want the two settings than you'll need the E2L but if not the newer G2 and 6P LED versions you can get 80 lumens for 12 hours which is pretty good and cheaper than the E2L.

all surefire lights are great but i would highly recomend the LED versions because a one hour run time is a pain, the 123A batts arent cheap and you can still keep the high lumens if needed.

Yeah-6P and a C3 Centurion.
Both Incans though

I would recommend the Surefire 6P LED. Lots of light, great battery life and tough as nails. There are two items that I never leave home without, and the 6P LED is one of them.

I just bought a Fenix TK10 and I love it. It throws tons of light and is more durable and has longer battery life with LEDs.

I also have a tiny single CR123 Ultrafire LED that fits on a keychain and is more powerful than a huge maglight.

more durable than what?

Re: Recomend me a surefire. - 07/26/08 08:08 PM

Macgregor, to me it sounds like the best choices would be the L1 and the E2L. I believe with the new generation of Cree LEDs that surefire now uses ican lights are dead in pocket lights.

The 6PL is another light to consider, although noticeably larger then either of the former mentioned lights. The diameter is going to make a difference in pocket carry, and it also goes not have a clip. My big complaint is that the 6P is not type 3 hard anodized, meaning it will not hold up like the other two lights over time.

Unsub, Ive never seen a fenix more durable then a surefire, and Ive seen dozens of each. It should also be mentioned the fenix over states their run times much more then surefire.

About the Hard anodizing, There was someone on CPF that took a Maglite with the same aluminum body as the Surefire, though it was not hard anodized (the Surefire was), he was able to saw through the maglite body with the Surefire body!

Bingo! I have several Surefires and a bunch of Fenix lights. I really like the Fenix lights, but there has never been a Fenix built that is tougher/more durable than a Surefire, never.

Re: Recomend me a surefire. - 07/27/08 03:45 AM

interesting info guys!

I've been thinking about a Surefire or a Fenix. I've come close to getting one or the other a few times and always wondered if the Surefire was worth the price difference.

I've got a good Pelican and Inova LED as well as several Mag lights, and Photons, but I've always wanted to get something even better. My blade habit usually gets in the way though.

Re: Recomend me a surefire. - 08/01/08 07:44 AM

Another option would be to find a used regular G2 or P6 and put one of Gene Malkoff's LED upgrades in it. They come in various power levels and you can pick the LED internals that are most appropriate for the task at hand. I have an M60L in my P6.

surefire makes a G2 LED and 6P LED now both are really good lights.

Re: Recomend me a surefire. - 08/03/08 01:40 PM

I have a few beamshots sessions over at CPF showcasing the most powerful mods in a SureFire host. Yes, I typically play with the high output, poor runtime incandescents, but am no stranger to LED modules either. Your very best bet for high output and long runtimes in a SureFire w/ a single emitter would require custom fabrication from CPFer Milkyspit member and require:

1. Seoul P7 Tower Module + SureFire M6 (bored reflector) + FM 3x17670 (paralleled contacts) + Pila 600S x 3. In direct drive, think 800-900 lumens for 4500mAh / 2800mA = 1.60h * 60min/h = 96min runtime.

2. Seoul P7 Tower Module + SureFire M4 (bored for 18mm cells & bored reflector) + Pila 600P x 2. In direct drive, think 800-900 lumens for 4400mAh / 2800mA = 1.57h * 60min/h = 94min runtime.

Or you can opt for a Milkyspit multi-Cree (throw), or multi-P4 (flood) solution. A simpler, off-the-shelf option would entail:

1. SureFire C3 (bored for 18mm cells, or not) + Pila 300S x 2 (or Pila 300P x 2) + Malkoff M60 (or M60L, M60LL, or M60F, depending upon desired application)

For superior throw to any of the Malkoff modules, go with the following:

1. SureFire C3 (bored for 18mm cells, or not) + Pila 300S x 2 (or Pila 300P x 2) + Dereelight 1SM-2

Else wait for the SureFire UA2, or UB2, both of which are to be fitted with the P7 .

Great Post Adamlau,

I have my Surefire M4 & M6 setup with Lumens HO-M4A, 12V, 550 lumens and a Lumens HO-M6R, 13V, 700 lumens respectively.

The higher voltages allow for the use of rechargeable CR123A batteries in the flashlights. They work great! Very bright light that has a run time of about 35 minutes with this setup.

Stansbrew,

Great pictures. Can you provide more info on the M6 modifications? I and maybe others, don't understand the data you have posted. I am most interested in lumens produced, batteries used and the necessary modifications to the M6.

Thanks

Re: Recomend me a surefire. - 08/29/08 02:04 PM

The WA1111 lamp will flash if run over 8.5 volts. Three 17670 Li-ion cells fresh off the charger will supply about 12.5 volts, not including closed loop sag and resistance losses. Perhaps stansbrew meant he was running the WA1111 off of two C-sized Li-ions. Anyhow, the WA1111 in an M6 host will output about 800 lumens off of two C-sized Li-ion cells for 3300 mAh / 3800 mA = 0.86 h * 60 min/h = 52 min, or so. Say a conservative 45 minutes. Output will drop as voltage decreases. Dogbert: You can always bore your M4 for Moli 18mm cells and run the Philips 5761 w/ FM bi-pin adapter for the highest output setup available in a standard SureFire host. Only 15 minutes, or so of light can be had, but the output is quite impressive. Throws useable light an easy 300 yards downfield. But if you guys really want a sweet handheld, wait for the upcoming Polarion 30W. About the size of a 2D Maglite, but much, much nastier. The way I see it, Polarion is the Busse of handheld illumination tools, McGizmo is Scrap Yard/Swamp Rat, SureFire is Emerson and Fenix is Kershaw .

On the 3 17670 battery config. 1 of them is a dummy like me, but yes it is BRIGHT.Better life than the 20 minutes from the 6 3 volt battery setup that it comes wth for 500 lumens on the mn21bulb.
