The Fern Swamp Lives! - 03/27/09 07:47 PM

Who ever heard of a dry swamp? Usually around this time of year, I like to walk down my road to this little undeveloped lot that is under water and covered with beautiful lush green ferns. I like to take pictures of it. So down the trail I went.

[Linked Image from i173.photobucket.com]

Huh? Where is all the water? Where are all the ferns?

Today I carried my SMLE and my .22 revolver. This large hollow tree is usually surrounded by water.

These are the dead dry stalks of last year's ferns. It has been too dry.

So back out to the road and home I walked.

At least a few Fiddlehead Ferns are starting to grow in my yard.

I did a little wood splitting and cut some curls with the Scrap Muk.

Rain is supposed to be on the way. That will green things up and bring out the ferns. Maybe I'll carry my new Busse HG55LE next time and get some decent pictures.

Yes, it sure is, and it fits perfectly.

Nice pics and sheath! We could use some rain, too. Next month, maybe.

That Muk is the sweetest knife I ever had from The Yard. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowdown.gif" alt="" />

I use mine for EVERYTHING!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

I only wish I had a sheath for mine too Vic. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

But I NEVER forget ... Good things come to those who wait! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

Jeff... fingers bleeding yet? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Peace.

It is much more beefy and substantial than the pics indicate. I broke a nice knife batoning this maple, and the Muk just breezed right through it. It's a great all-around knife, even if it is a little different looking.

We got a little rain a few days ago.

The BIG rain that the Weather Channel predicted for us was just a little shower. They need to stop all that global warming scare crap and hire some good forecasters!

Re: Scrap Muk in a Dry Swamp - 03/28/09 02:56 AM

Thanks for sharing the pics and your walk-about. I noticed last week when I was out a lot of the little streams and ponds are dry, of course that makes sense here since we are in a drought of sorts.

The MUK does shine nice in the woods, and I got to say I love that little Smitty you got with you.

It rained hard after midnight for a good hour or more. I bet that swamp has water in it this morning. My little yard swamp does.

Our winter storm warning turned into a non-event thank goodness! We only got a little ice and snow overnight, and it melted off as it's near 50 degrees now. Looking like Spring again! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Re: Scrap Muk in a Swamp - 04/06/09 06:33 PM

Now that the rain has finally ended, time to check out my yard and the little fern swamp. My wetlands have returned.

[Linked Image from i173.photobucket.com]

As soon as it dries, I have some mowing to do, but for now, I can enjoy the wildflowers that have sprung up.

[Linked Image from i173.photobucket.com]

My drainage ditch is full. That's a good sign that the swamp may have returned.

[Linked Image from i173.photobucket.com]

Down the old trial I went, so far, so good.

[Linked Image from i173.photobucket.com]

Unless I want to get wet, this is as far as I can go on this trail.

[Linked Image from i173.photobucket.com]

I'll have to hack my way through this thick stuff to get to the fern swamp. If I had my old boots on, I'd just wade the trail. It would be easier going for this fat old man. I used my Busse SAR7 Bowie (not available in stores) as a machete.

[Linked Image from i173.photobucket.com]
[Linked Image from i173.photobucket.com]
[Linked Image from i173.photobucket.com]

At last, I'm at the swamp. The ferns are coming to life. In a week it will be a green lush jungle of them.

The Fern Swamp - 05/20/09 05:59 PM

Took a walk back to the fern swamp today. It's been raining for four days, so I took advantage of a break in the rain to get out and about. Good thing I did the yard last week, too wet now.
[Linked Image from i173.photobucket.com]
[Linked Image from i173.photobucket.com]
Today I used the Urban Mutt as my micro-machete. Keeping limbs off the trails reduces getting ticks and such when I walk them. The swamp is back. No wonder nobody ever built here. I like it just the way it is anyway.
[Linked Image from i173.photobucket.com]
[Linked Image from i173.photobucket.com]
[Linked Image from i173.photobucket.com]
The private drive, known as East-West Blvd. What a dumb name for it. Real estate developers just have a knack for giving roads dumb names. It should be Horn Dog Road.
[Linked Image from i173.photobucket.com]
Back at my own property, I checked the edge on my Mutt. Who says a thick knife won't cut?
[Linked Image from i173.photobucket.com]
The weather has been strange, 58 to 62 degrees, windy and rainy. Sounds more like pitman's weather than coastal Georgia's. Things have greened up. Checked the view out back.
[Linked Image from i173.photobucket.com]
[Linked Image from i173.photobucket.com]
[Linked Image from i173.photobucket.com]
Touched up the edge with my paddle strop. It isn't just for Bark River knives, you know. It works fine on Scrappers, too.

This is one Barkie that is almost as tough as a Scrap Yard knife, the Bravo-1 in CPM 154. Nice knife.

If you touch up your knives after each use, they never get dull.

Neither, lately. I usually carry the Bird Dog. For a while it was the SS4, and the Bravo-1. I try to show all my knives some love, but there are just so many.

A thick knife can cut meaner than hell if HD is doing the sharpening... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
