Yellowstone - 06/05/09 06:42 AM

Im planning on a family trip up to Yellowstone this summer. We are hoping to get there around mid July. I was wondering if any of you Dogs have been there and have any tips or info or anything! I will be getting a guide book, but I trust you guys more than some guidebook. All I know right now is that we will be coming from the South Ent.

Thanks Guys!!!

As you come toward Yellowstone from the South, Make sure to visit Grand Tetons, too.

That is one trip I hope to make soon. I think it is one of the most beautiful places--from the photos that I have seen. I think the sunrise and sunsets might be on of the best things there.

If possible, try to go up to Glacier National Park as well, It's BEAUTIFUL (or at least it was YEARS ago).

I haven't been for years, but we always visited West Yellowstone and seemed to make it to Jackson Hole as well.

Jackson Hole is awesome.

I've never been but my inlaws are about to go...maybe they will have some tips. A buddy of mine went a few years back and he said it was muddy and cold. But muddy and cold are realative. A guy from West Texas might look at it a little different.

It's a wonderful family trip, good luck to you and your family.

Like Mike said make sure to see the Grand Tetons! Most of the sites at Yellowstone are spread out, you need to drive to most of them, special geysers, colored springs, formations, with lots of walking! Be ready to walk tons!

Some geysers only erupt yearly so going to them is a gamble, others like "Old Faithful" are packed but they have someone talking in-between blows.

Your guide book will be very useful for planning out each outing and don't forget to ask the park people for tips on what's hot that day (pun).

Things are expensive around there, towns, lodging etc but very nice. Be ready for the smell of sulfur! mmmm rotten eggs lol

some days the Grand Tetons are so clear!

I went there 2 years ago, to both Grand Teton and Yellowstone. Both parks are awesome (I took 1200 pics on my 2 digital cameras ). It was one of my favorite trips. I recommend hiking the trails and getting off the boarded walkways and away from the crowds. We had some amazing hikes and saw lots of wildlife and scenic views by hiking the trails. My favorite hike was hiking to the top of Mt. Washburn. It is a steep hike and about 3 hours or more each way but well worth it. Plan to spend a half day hiking it if you decide to do it. We also drove all the spokes to see the entrances which made for some nice scenic drives. All of the main sites are nice so I recommend seeing as many as time allows. How long are you staying? We did 5 days in Yellowstone and 2 in Teton and that seemed like enough time.

If you have any questions that are specific, let me know. You will love both parks - they are simply awesome.

Just make sure you do the common sense things if you take the off-the board-walk type hikes. Take food and water, sunscreen (it was mid 90's and very sunny when we were there), chapstick or something for dry lips unless you are accustomed to the dryness, maps or guides if you have them, hats and sunglasses, and most importantly --> Grizzly bear bite salve.

Have fun!

As a Wyoming native, I would recommend that you double the time that you have planned spending in the Yellowstone, Grand Teton Area. There is just too much to see and experience. One of the major joys is just watching a beaver pond for the better part of a day. The otters and beavers are incredible.

ohh yeah, when you see everyone pulling over and crowds for no good reason, and "looking/watching" it's more than likely "animal-watching" like they never seen a deer, moose or any animal! city folk/tourist!

Great family trip but allow much more time if possible. I remember all the family trips and they were great. Now we are just the two of us and hitting really remote places that we planned out when having young children with us. I always have guide books and maps on everything before I go to an area. I have been studying the Grand Canyon for years- made numerous extensive trips ( one month plus) and still can't get enough of it !! Up our way we are seeing a big increase in camping and such as folks are doing less expensive trips due to the economy. Make sure you have reservations. Enjoy

Glacier National park, and seeing the Redwoods is on the list, and camping on Mt Rainier and Crater Lake.
