Silky...

Silky... - 07/22/09 05:58 AM

My latest blade has arrived. I love it. It went through this piece of hardwood in less than 30 seconds.

Meet the Silky Gomboy 210:

Here it is next to the Mutt.

Compact when folded:

But substantial when opened...

Cuts very smooth for large teeth (7 teeth per 30mm)

In hand:

Second blade position:

Closed:

First impressions:

1. Very well made
2. Very light
3. Cuts like a chain saw
4. Great rubber handle, very comfortable and soft feel
5. Cuts very smooth for aggressive teeth
6. Great for bushcraft, camping, and pruning.
7. Can change blades easily
8. Very strong and secure lock

This one will accompany me into the woods no matter what knife I take with me. I think it's both safer and far less intrusive to use on green and dry wood than an axe or large chopper.

Pairs up nicely with the DMDC doesn't it?

Nice, and I understand that part being a little safer for use on wood.

Thanks! I didn't know that Silky existed. Added to list, very grateful!

Silky saws are awesome little saws. I have a couple of pocket boys and they are really nice. I have a bigboy too and it cuts well too...wished i would have got the course teeth on it though, but they are really nice saws.

I did quite a bit of research and couldn't decide between the Silky and the Kershaw/Bahco Laplander. In the end I chose the Silky because the blade can easily be interchanged with more agressive/finer teeth and the Silky comes in many sizes. I chose the Gomboy after initially wanting a Pocketboy (which is smaller).

It seems the Silky and Laplander are by far the most popular.

I really really like the various folding/compact saw options.

I always see the axe vs chopper argument, and rarely does anyone bring up a good saw.

My personal favorite woods kit is: compact saw, mid-sized brush clearer/batoner, and small belt knife. Much more versatile than an axe or big chopper paired with a belt knife, for about the same weight.

I just read about Silkys and thought they looked good. Glad to have the review and pics.

That's pretty cool! I didn't know it existed either. I'll have to look into it.

Very true. I confess that a saw just does it for me. I’ve worked with both saws and axes from a young age and have never had an accident with a saw. I cannot say the same about an axe, or even a knife. Here are the benefits I have seen of a good folding saw (6”-9”):
  • The folding saw is as quick, or quicker than a chopper or smaller camp axe for cutting through green or hard wood up to 4 inches. This makes it perfect for general woodcraft, constructing shelters and traps or preparing firewood.
It is far lighter than either a large knife or axe when backpacking or hiking.
It is more inconspicuous than an Axe or large chopper
    It is much safer
It consumes less energy to do the same job
It helps keep your knife sharp by taking over much of the work
It’s much quieter than chopping (you can sometimes hear someone chopping from a long distance away)
It cuts much cleaner and therefore requires less finishing
It is less destructive on green wood (more like pruning)
You can saw through materials other than wood like PVC pipe, bone (hunting) etc.
    It’s cheap!
Did I mention it’s safer? This is a very important and much under stressed point. I have heard of many serious axe accidents in the wilderness. An axe is not something you mess with and should not be used when tired, during low light situations, around young children, in tight spaces or by inexperienced operators. It can even cause serious injury by just lying around carelessly in a camp site.

My favorites are a compact saw, a sturdy 4” knife, a multi tool and a small axe. I might leave the axe at home or in the truck for shorter trips.

Did I just see a saw in a sea of knives?

I think I saw a saw!

I concur...the Silky's are great. I have the Big Boy and the Pocket Boy. As said...they cut extremely well are comfortable and VERY light imo. The pocket boy goes in my pack all the time. I bring the big boy along a lot too, especially if I don't bring along a big chopper.

Do you have the fine teeth or large teeth one?
Posted By: digthisbigcrux

Re: Silky... - 07/24/09 08:24 PM

Extra large...

On the Big Boy it's 7 teeth per 30mm (5.92 teeth per inch)

on the Pocket Boy it's 8 teeth per 30mm (6.77 teeth per inch)

On the sheath in the middle, what are holes for? Where do you tie it down? Does it have a loop?

It's my homemade bushcraft sheath. For details check the second part of this post:
