Ruger Vaquero, Bisley Blackhawk, Bisley Single Six - 08/02/09 02:10 AM

I don't know how it happened but I have ended up with the following single-action revolvers and think this is a complete battery to cover any animal on the North American continent.

Ruger Bisley Single Six, .22 LR an .22 mag cylinder, all steel parts, 5 1/2" brl, adjustable sights. With the dual cylinder it covers small game no problem.

Ruger New Vaquero, .357 mag/.38 spcl, 4 5/8" brl, fixed sights, all steel. With the ability to shoot either the .357 mag or .38 spcl it has most of the game covered in the area I live in.

Ruger Bisley Blackhawk Accusport Version .45 Colt and .45 ACP cylinder, 5 1/2" brl, adjustable sights, stainless steel, all steel. The .45 Colt can be loaded up with some serious ammo. My favorite is the Buffalo Bore 325 gr Keith Lead pushing 1300+ fps. Th at beats the .44 mag without mag pressures--of course it is only safe to shoot in a Redhawk, Blackhawk, or T/C. The .45 Colt is very versatile and can be used on all game in North America and most of the world.

With the combo of above calibers, with the exception of the .45 Colt, they are relative easy to find in about any store. Got to love that when you are away on a trip and realize that you need some more ammo.

Now what about rifles? I got to finish that up too.
.22lr is a Henry GOlden Boy--slickest actioned .22lr rifle I have ever shot.
.357/.38 spcl I am thinking a 92 action lever or a Marlin.
.45 Colt will be a 92 action or Marlin so I can take full advantage of the heavy hitting ammo.

Got to love making since! Oh, and what does this have to Bussekin knives--I have one on the ammo belt no matter what I am carrying.

I used to have a Single Six in .22 Magnum. It had a .22LR cylinder, too, but it wasn't as accurate with those. I carried that revolver for years. I love the feel of a good single action but I don't own any now. If I get another, it will be in 44 Magnum so it can shoot the same shells as my Winchester 94.

You are right about the Henry rifles. I have the plain Jane model and it has a super slick action. It's a squirrel killer.

I almost picked a .44 Super BH, but when I had a chance to get the dual Bisley I jumped on that. I love the .45 Colt rd, I have been shooting for as long as I can remember. I also have a USFA SAA that has the 7 1/2" brl, blued and color case hardened by Doug Turnbull, and ivory grips. I am a SAA lover!

Never got into the cowboy shooting deal for a couple reasons: 1) time, a lack of it, 2) requires a couple revolvers, a rifle, and shotgun when real cowboys rarely was able to afford a cartridge revolver, and 3) stages are not historical correct most of the time--more Hollywood. If I were to do it, the clothing, glasses, guns, etc. would have to be period correct.

I never got into the cowboy shooting but had a couple single action revolvers though.

Ruger Bisley Vaquero .44 Mag.
Ruger Blackhawk 50th Anniversary .357 Mag. (2x)
Ruger Single Six .22LR/.22MAG.
Ruger Bearcat .22LR

Do you see a pattern?

Yeah, I've had quite a few patterns like that over the years. Especially when I use to work at a gun store. Now, I have a SY pattern that's growing.

Can all .45 colt revolvers chamber .45 acp too?
just wondering.

Re: Ruger Vaquero, Bisley Blackhawk, Bisley Single Six - 08/04/09 03:13 AM

No, this Ruger Bisley Blackhawk is what they call a convertible since it has both a .45 Colt and a separate .45 ACP cylinder. From what I understand there are some gunsmiths that will modify the ACP cylinder so it can use the .45 Auto Rim or standard ACP rds.

sumoj275, I had that 45/45acp Ruger Bisley you spoke of...had to send it back and they sent something else. Bad, long story. You are right about the pressure thing. Check out David Linebaughs thoughts on it, great info.

If I was going to do it again I think I would just get a 44 Mag because of the availability of parts(ammo, cases, bullets). Also, a double action Ruger has just as clean of a trigger pull as a single and it can be shot more rapidly if for instance you took it hiking in bear country.

Re: Ruger Vaquero, Bisley Blackhawk, Bisley Single Six - 08/04/09 05:46 AM

Again, those little single actions just have something about them.

IMJ, was yours one of the Accusport models?
I would normally agree with you on the DA thing for most people but I have shot SAA all my life and I am pretty good with it, especially coming out of a cross draw holster. For me, finding components is easier in .45 than .44 since I am set up to reload, and will be casting my own bullets this fall.

On Linbaugh, Clements, and Bowen--I would love one of their creations but I will settle for the .45 Colt pushing .454 Casual zone.

Re: Ruger Vaquero, Bisley Blackhawk, Bisley Single Six - 08/04/09 06:01 AM

I called David one day and talked for hours, nice guy. Yes, it was one of the Accusport models. I found it online someplace and had it shipped to my local FFL.

David thought the best bet was to get a 7.5 inch blued gun and have it cut to 5.5.

I'm sure you know whats best for you. Now you have me looking at GunBroker!

I got the contact info for the dealer I got mine from. I am picking it up tomorrow, unfortunately my dealer did not get to the po in time--doh. Anyway, this production run isn't supposed to have the undersized cylinder and are coming with the laminated black/silver/green laminated grips. Just let e know if you ae interested. Oh yeah, the dealer I ordered it from is in SD and was in OK in two days.

Re: Ruger Vaquero, Bisley Blackhawk, Bisley Single Six - 08/07/09 04:11 AM

imaginefj,

I agree single actions are fun. My favorite single action shooter is a Cimmarron Arms "Evil Roy" 45LC. The action from the factory is incredibly smooth. And the trigger pull is 2 lbs - buttery smooooooth. It's based on the 1st generation Colt Single Action Army (SAA) model so it's a real pretty gun as well.

Re: Ruger Vaquero, Bisley Blackhawk, Bisley Single Six - 08/08/09 12:40 AM

Coltman, I have played with an Evil Roy and it is nice. My favorite revolver in SAA is my USFA blackpowder frame and cylinder, 7 1/2" brl, Doug Turnbull cch and blueing, ivory grips, tuned action. That revolver is like shooting a piece from Heaven!

Re: Ruger Vaquero, Bisley Blackhawk, Bisley Single Six - 08/08/09 01:07 AM

sumoj275,

The USFA guns are in a class by themselves. Probably better quality then Colt SAA's. I don't own any USFA firearms and I have never shot one but I have seen and drooled on them at gun shows.

Is your USFA part custom ? I ask because you mentioned Doug Turnbull God father of Colt restorations or did Doug team up with USFA on a gun ?

Side note: I really like that USFA snub nose.

The pride & joy of my Colt collection is a pair of sequentially numbered 2nd Generation Colts 4 3/4 inch barrell in nickel finish but I am too chicken to shoot them, they are just too pretty and pieces of art

Re: Ruger Vaquero, Bisley Blackhawk, Bisley Single Six - 08/09/09 09:50 AM

Nice set of 2nd Gens. Yes, this is one of the USFA that Turnbull did. I lucked into it as the original owner died, his widow sold it to a gun shop, and the shop had just put it in the case when I walked in. I got it for a little bit more than what the ivory grips would cost today. The card of the grip maker was in the box and the sales receipt. I wish I could have seen all the other stuff that came out of this guys collection but from what I understand the majority of it ended up in the store owners collection.

My Holy Grail SAA is a first gen, black powder frame, ivory grips 7 1/2" brl, engraved and silver plated. Good thing that most of those are in a museum or in private collections otherwise I would sale the house and get a divorce.

Re: Ruger Vaquero, Bisley Blackhawk, Bisley Single Six - 08/13/09 08:37 PM

You guys have mentioned some great gunsmiths above.

I have had Hamilton Bowen tune several Ruger single actions for me, and also have three conversions from him. EXCELLENT!

I have two John Linebaugh conversions (.475 & .500) and three from Dustin (.475, .475, .500). EXCELLENT!

Another person not mentioned yet is Gary Reeder. Reeder has received much ridicule from various internet posters. HOWEVER, in all my dealings with him, he has been very kind and helpful. His work has been excellent also. His Trail Rider and Gunfighter gripframes are great. He also has several wildcat cartridges that are smoking hot. (I like the .356 GNR for 100+ yd revolver shooting.)

A Ruger single action (production or conversion) and a Busse Combat, Scrap Yard, or Swamp Rat knife go well together on the belt in the woods.
