New Toy...FN Five-Seven 5.7x28mm

FN Five Seven...20 round capacity with standard magazines (30 round mags available). Adjustable sights with tritium inserts. Polymer construction in pistol and magazines. They even include the test casing and a sign off sheet from the test...hand signed and dated by the individual responsible for test firing the weapon. Mine was test fired on 06/18/2009. Overall, the fit and finish are excellent.

Ammunition is 40 grain Hornady V-Max that is proprietary FN and manufactured by Fiocchi and loaded in the U.S. The price is roughly $31.00/box/50 or .64/round).

I ran 50 rounds through it tonight without any problems. Out of the box, it shot low and to the left but was adusted to the point of center ring at 15 yards consistently. The recoil to me was similar to that of a .38 and it was very easy to keep on target in follow up shots.

It looks like this would be an excellent zombie defense weapon.

Size comparison...Springfield Armory 1911. The FN seems to be about half the weight of the .45 when both are unloaded.


Broken down into components for cleaning. That's all there is...3 groups to clean with no further break down reguired or recommended. No tools needed for disassembly or assembly.

Couple questions, am I seeing right and the complete round looks like a RIFLE round? And from the looks of the lug on the bottm, is it a straight blowback? Enquiring minds and all that ya know. Looks like it might be a pretty good gun. (I still like my .45s though) I got a cousin that says I ain't right.

SH, you're right, it looks like a rife cartridge. Straight blowback is correct.

The round measures out to .224 cal...roughly the same as .22WMR. If you compare ballistic data, it is most similar in performance to the .22 WMR round.

You can get 10 round mag extenders and some really nice ammo from a site called Elite Ammunition. I haven't done either of these yet but its high on the list. A ton of info and a nice user group sponsered by eliteammunitons.com is fivesevenforum.com.

I saw yesterday that Sportman's Guide has the FN ammo about $10.00/box cheaper than what it is here in town and, as luck woudl have it, I just got a $10.00 e-coupon...hmmmm. I hope the mailman doesn't have a hernia...I may have to order a few boxes!

If I am not mistaken, that is the type of weapon used in the recent massacre at Ft Hood. Not that the weapon caused the attack, but it has a lot of firepower and good penetration, apparently.

I'm sure the usual suspects will blame the whole terrorist shooting incident on guns. It does remind me of a mini assault rifle. Those little bottle neck cartridges look like good varmint rounds. Any actual rifles made in 5.7x28?

I've been seeing a lot of posts about the FSN and Ft. Hood but I decided to not mention it unless it came up. It is a lot of firepower in a nice package but if you look at Luby's cafe massacre and the other incidents that have happen in that area of the country then you can probably find more fault water (or something) than guns..

The FSN is a nice gun that shoots a nasty little round. Comparisons of it and the Grendal have been floating around since it was first created. They seem to compare very close on many different points. My interest in the Grendel is due to how fond I am of the FiveSeven. A lot of guys debate stopping power and shot placement but most have never even shot one. Some debate wound channels, over and under penetration, and energy dumping. I think there's some gel shot pictures somewhere out there. They aren't just super impressive (none cut in half or exploded) but I'm comfortable with what I saw and I've been more than comfortable with what I have seen at the range.

Yes, it is Skunk Hunter. I use the same OTIS .223 cleaning kit that I use on my M4 for the 5.7.

I've never had the chance to examine or fire a Grendel.

I looked at the AR57 as well and, as I have a penchant for the odd and unusual, I wanted to get one before they dry up, if, in fact, they do get banned but I have liked the basic premise of the 5.7 since its introduction.

If you remember, this weapon had a bad reputation in the beginning as it was heavily lobbied against by police unions and in 2005, the Five-Seven pistol and 5.7x28mm cartridge were specifically targeted for a U.S. federal ban.

I don't want to get caught up in any rhetorical conversations about right and wrong and I hope I have not offended anyone by posting about the weapon.

It's just a weapon. It looks like a good one. I have a Bushmaster AR-15. The model the beltway snipers used to kill innocent civilians with. It is sobering to think just how much evil one can do with modern weapons. Or how much good. I believe in having adequate firepower to defend my loved ones and my neighborhood against bandits or aggressors if necessary.

Thank you as well Jeep! I'm deeply fond of the SA. I just finished changing out the recoil spring and installing a new SS guiderod and bushing.

What I really like are the G 10 grips I got from VZ Custom Grips . They are the Operator Grips and I asked for a thumb relief at the eject button and it worked out perfectly.

Just to clarify... The 5.7mm ammunition you can buy as a citizen is NOT what this weapon was designed to shoot. The Fiveseven was intended and designed to shoot a lighter, faster, steel cored bullet which gives some limited armor penetration. It was meant to provide a sidearm that can actually wound an enemy on the modern battlefield where body armor is common.

What you can buy on the public market has that plastic tip to promote bullet expansion, and is not considered armor penetrating. It's hilarious that the police were annoyed about this handgun because it would supposedly negate their soft armor; the actual armor penetrating 5.7mm isn't available to the public.
