Thurdays woods wandering - fatwood score! - 11/27/09 02:08 PM

got up at the crack of dawn, made a big plate of beans and bread, and headed off into the woods. Wandered thru the woods, headed off trail and started the fatwood hunt. Right off the bat i found about 4 lbs of premium resin infused douglas fir fatwood, from a tree rotting on the ground.

Used my Sandvick saw to portion the pieces, then my Scrapyard SOD, SY S5 and Emerson A100 to clean up the pieces. I reeked of resin. It was heavenly, I almost felt giddy.

Saw a couple hundred thousand birds in a big cluster, feeding on the fish. They would form a massive 1/2 km long semi circle and splash the water with their wings, then close the circle and push towards the shore, where they would feed. It was noisy and impressive

pushed on and then stopped for a while, to brew a cuppa.

the brew kit, 2 GI cups one modded into a Esbit or alchohol stove, canteen, and 40 year old leather strap from a Swiss army ruck

hahaha, no its just lying for the photo. If the stove was on the ebtire apt buuilding would burn down - that stuff burns like napalm <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Man the burners looked like they were glowing.

Fatwood burns fast and easy. I can't find anything like it locally that seems to burn as well.

I need to go out and find some fatwood.

Last week, before I got sick, I went out to a stand where there
was a lot of pine killed by the beetle. Found some great stumps
to get some, but when I bit into them with the golok, they broke
up like sawdust.

Did that for about 6 or 7 stumps before I ran into the black bear.
Decided to let the fellow have some space and left the area.

A lot of times it is in the roots that you will find the fatwood

Sure like that stove Bushman.

Got a question for you.
The other day I was in the surplus store, and picked up a tin (about the size
of a tuna can) of something called Jellied Cooking Fuel.
Would that fit in the stove I wonder?

Cheers

^ yo Dawg! nope the canned sterno heat will NOT fit under that setup. (you could squeeze out the jelly onto a pile of moss or something and put the cup over it.

Good to know.
Would it be much good to put it in the Kelly Kettle fire pot?
Would it get things hot enough I wonder to boil water in that 1.5L kettle?

Cheers
