sure is my fellow Dawg! look for old rotten stumps and on every one you find do a "cut and sniff" test with a knife.

so when you cut and sniff how deep is the fatwood usually? im guessing the smell is something like pine sap? does fatwood have a certain smell?

Seeing the fatwood hauls got me motivated to go find some fatwood in my area. I managed to get some pretty decent fatwood. Nothing compared to what you have but some of the best I have seen in this area.

I changed my tactics from rotten stumps to weathered stumps and am batting crazy high percentages. I found one that I will have to go back for. It is probably about 125 lbs of pretty good fatwood.

Here is a chunk from the stump.

Thanks for the info on the ceders. I am in an area that has very few pines. I will keep an eye out when I am messing around over spring break.

most of it i section up into smaller pieces, dry it a bit, then grade it and bag it up (stocking away for lean times). I use some when i go hiking, i teach others how to light fires and it makes great gifts to Park rangers, Conservation Officers etc.

I "may" start selling it in the future, but the shipping costs from Canada to the USA are horrendous.......
