Deal spotting

Deal spotting - 03/07/10 06:26 AM

Hi everyone, just wanted to post so everyone gets a heads up regarding the new no deal spotting rule.

There are no issues with reviewing products relating to the outdoors and it is not our intent to stop that. We don't want to stop that! Rather, the advertising of products and deal spotting needs to stop.

If you have questions, feel free to post them or fire a message off to any of the mods! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

Thanks for clearing that up, Chris. I thought deal spotting was against the spirit of rule #4, but I wasn't sure. Now it is spelled out. I have locked those threads that seem to be blatant deal spotting, but left those that are reviews of outdoor products. We all appreciate such reviews, and they are appropriate to this forum. No offense meant to any of he posters. The no deal spotting rule will not affect quality reviews of such outdoor products.

Both opened with where you bought them and what you paid. They are good reviews, though.

Re: Deal spotting - 03/07/10 07:10 AM

so is it price and where i got it the nono or i where i got it the nono, or just the price i got for the nono?

i.e. "hey i just got this from here for this much"

or "hey i just this for xxxx dollars"

or "hey i just got this from xxxxx"

thats the nono

Re: Deal spotting - 03/07/10 07:22 AM

What do you think? Is it deal spotting? I think both were, but were followed by good reviews. If you just left out advertising the price and vendor at the beginning, your reviews are just fine. We just don't want to do free advertizing for any vendors on this or the knife forum.

There, I have edited the prices and vendors and unlocked them. If anyone wants to know where to find them, they can contact you.

Talking about the product is just fine, but whenever you start talking about how great it is and where you got it from it does become advertising.

You'll be fine, bro. Heck, I have broken the rule myself on occasion, I'm sure.

Friggin ridiculous. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif" alt="" />

Busse is the epitome of hypocritical on this issue.

Direct competitors fine and understandable but unrelated products is stupid.

So how about this? "Good deal on xyz here." Not bragging just letting others on this forum know about a good deal. This is the survival forum and the way I see it, discussing gear and makers price is part of the spirit of this forum.

I am not talking about blatant spam or product hussle but genuine eureka moments of deal finding

Stop being paranoid.

Agree SAR, but this is their sandbox and we need to play by their rules. We're only guests here just as on any other forum. C'est la vie.

I appreciate finding out about non-knife camping/survival gear deals, so I'm guessing it is w/in the rules to say something like...

"Hey I just got this great Molle vest that I think you guys would love, so go to <some other forum> or PM me for details."

Does that work?

Understand but it doesn’t mean its any less stupid. Dumb management decisions like this is why I went into business for myself. It’s hard to soar with the eagles.....
Any interest in this site converts to sales, product talk is one of the big reasons people visit.

Re: Deal spotting - 03/09/10 12:33 PM

I read the OP about the molle vest. I thought that it was a good heads up. It seems that something else has been deleted somewhere along the line so I am confused as to what the actual problem is.
I read and participate in forums because I believe that members posts are offered without an ax to grind. They are not pushing an item as a salesman or store owner might because they are overstocked in inventory or because the markup is higher on it that another. I like the it when someone does a review, also for the same reasons. If something is offered by a vendor at a great price then I see no reason that the members of the forum should not be apprised so that they may take advantage of a good deal.

But as JD stated above, "this is their sandbox and we need to play by their rules. We're only guests here just as on any other forum. C'est la vie."

Re: Deal spotting - 03/09/10 05:37 PM

It's pretty standard. BF has a rule against deal spotting, too. This FREE forum is supported only by Dan at Scrap Yard Knife Company. As you may have noticed, there is no advertising of any kind here. Dan allows comparisons of other knives with Scrap Yard Knives and discussion about other Busse-made knives. He even allowed a thread about folding knives. He allows reviews of other outdoor equipment on this forum all the time. Just no deal spotting. We all get excited when we find a bargain on something and want to share it with our friends. We just don't want the forum to degenerate into a bunch of non-SYKCO related bargains posted for free here. The Outdoor and Fieldcraft Forum is not the Outdoor Gear Bargain Announcement Forum. Go ahead and show your latest Maxpedition kit all set up. We like that. Just no deal spotting, guys.

Intelligent discussion and feedback is one thing, being insulting isn't acceptable. You can come back in a week.

No problem, Silverback. I like bargains as much as anyone. And if I see some new gear being reviewed here, I might inquire by Pm or email about where to buy it and how much it costs. Avoiding free adverising for vendors in the posts on the forum is not hard to do. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
