kayakers?

kayakers? - 04/05/10 09:37 PM

There's got to be other Kayakers in the Yard. I just bought a SOT one for fishing. I did some kayaking in Hawaii and found it much more enjoyable than canoeing, so I ended up scoring my g/f a used on one craigslist as well.

Mine won't be here for a few weeks, which is just fine as I don't think we'll have nice enough weather for at least another month.

This is the exact model/color I got. Can't wait for the warm weather...this should take me places that will give me a ton of reasons to use my knives.

I use a kayak for fishing. This is my Native Ultimate 14.5 during my last trip out into the Laguna Madre.

I love to Kayak. I have three. One is a tandem so I can drag the runt along.

I have a johnnybar so Ican fish off of it as well. I love my kayaks.

Johnny bar with a small pike.

I mostly do whitewater rafting- but I have used SOTs on many occasions. Very nice indeed

Nice setups guys. I will definitely be doing some fishing on it. I've got a ton of rivers, plus a number of big lakes with in 30 minutes of me that have everything from landlocked Steelhead, to Tiger Muskie to Kokanee.

Re: kayakers? - 04/08/10 03:16 PM

You will love your OK. I currently have two 15' and two 11' Trident Anglers.

A trolling motor mounted to a milk crate can give you a paddle-free ride and hold much fishing gear.

I rarely use a trolling motor, but it is great fun for children.

A milk crate with some homemade PVC rod holders holds all my fishing gear.

You can cover some serious distance on a camping trip in a kayak. Don't forget compass & maps. GPS is a great idea also.

Kayaks? Look at my avatar that was my Wilderness Systems Ride.

Lol, I actually sold that particular boat but I still have a Malibu Mini-X and a Wilderness Systems Tarpon 120. It is a touch cooler here today but I have begun rigging up my gear and have some bait frozen in the fridge.

thanks, BillyJoe...and imaginefj, yeah, you were the one I had in mind when I posted. I remembered the profile pic, but forgot who exactly it belonged to.

Mine is due to be delivered on Tuesday.....I have a small lake 5 minutes from my house..I can already feel a cough coming on. I'm sure I'll have a fever by Wednesday...may have to take the day off

Re: kayakers? - 04/09/10 04:54 AM

Oh, kayaking is addicting. Wear a vest, maybe buy a good so you'll want too. I have the 5 dollar orange variety and don't wear one like I should...I guess.

There is a great kayaking website texaskayakfisherman.com. It has tons of great info.

Re: kayakers? - 04/15/10 08:32 PM

I ran my jugs for the first time last week. Caught one decent cat, we only had a few hooks in the water too so it wasn't bad. It has been awhile since I paddled very far and it was harder than I remembered.

Re: kayakers? - 04/19/10 08:21 PM

not yet, but my yak did arrive.

[Linked Image from i732.photobucket.com]

It was 72 degrees here yesterday and I was dying to take it out on its maiden voyage, but I did the responsible thing (according to the woman) and finished up some work in the yard and gardens....

I'm going to rig it up with a Johnny Bar this week and install a rod holder and maybe eventfully a fishfinder. This weekend is supposed to be nice, so I'll probably take it to this small no engine lake and test it out. I want to get a few sessions under my belt before I venture out on to the bigger lakes and Columbia river.

I'll post up pics of my first trip...

Re: kayakers? - 04/19/10 10:09 PM

Hey Devil,

Can I ask how you rigged your orange safety flag? Ive seen a lot of yahoos on powerboats on our local waterways so I'd feel better in my dark green yak if I upped my visibility some.

thanks

Re: kayakers? - 04/20/10 03:14 AM

I went out to the garage and checked. I bought the flag here in town but here is the company that puts them out. Click here: Firestik flag

Mine is the 4 foot model and came with a mounting base which I secured to the yak with stainless steel hardware. The MSRP is 15.99 on the website.

Also, I rigged up a PVC pipe and secured it to the milk crate as a mount for the aft navigation light. The light is a Tecktite MK III and is an adaptation of the Kayalite. The light fits inside the PVC after slight sanding of the light's plastic body. I topped the PVC with 3M Solas reflective tape and refelective orange tape from Ace Hardware to give me a bit of safety comfort after the sun goes down.

I purchased my milk crates from the Duluth Trading Company so that I would have some that are not stamped with "PROPERTY OF...DAIRY".

Re: kayakers? - 04/20/10 05:22 PM

thanks much for the great info, Devil. Those flags are exactly what I had in mind. Love the way you have your kayak rigged. I have a bunch of milk crates, but they are the older ones which I use to store some of my excess record collection. The newer ones don't seem to fit records too well, so I ended up picking one up from the Container store so I wouldn't have to use one of the old ones.

Devil, really nice setup. That old Honda in the background is too cool!

Re: kayakers? - 04/20/10 07:04 PM

Thanks guys!

Imagine, that old Honda is about 20 years old, has less than 2000 miles on it, and has sat for years. It belonged to my FAL who rode it to work when the weather was nice. There's even a matching fairing for it upstairs.

Re: kayakers? - 04/20/10 09:33 PM

That is makes it even cooler and it probably gets 55mpg or better. I had a cb650 with 4 carbs that had to be synchronized just right and it was beyond my skill level. I needed the money anyway.

Hey guys... Firstly just to say, "What a great site, lots of useful tips, advice and insight"... Nice one. I'm an avid Kayak Fisherman/Camper/Survivalist from the East Coast of South Africa. I've been Kayak Fishing for about 15 years now and there's nothing better than leaving really early in the morning while it's still dark and dissapearing for a few days. Paddling out the harbour and as the day goes beach somewhere along the coast and spend the night, of course while enjoying the catch of the day. Unfortuantely having to contend with the pounding surf of the Indian Ocean isn't always pleasure, but that's what it's all about.

Here's my rig and few pics of the days...

Nice pics ZuluX. And, welcome to the yard!

I've rented kayaks before but I don't own one. It is something i have thought about though.

I really don't need another hobby to spend money on.

The thing that comes to mind when paddling out of harbor on the Ease coast of South Africa into the Indian ocean, SHARKS.......

Re: kayakers? - 06/29/11 06:25 AM

I've had my fair share of 'run-ins' or should I say 'bump-ins' with Zambezis, Tigers and the odd GW, it's more out of being inquisitive than actually wanting to eat me... lol. End of the day I'm in his back-yard and like any top predator they just want to see who's messing around in their territory.

What's been happening lately is that as soon as you hook a fish and the fight starts it's a race getting your catch onto the deck and into the hatch before the 'Tax Man' arrives. With all the commotion it sets off the Sharks hunting instinct and of course it's an easy meal for them... lol.

There's a few basic ways to behave if you have a shark that's showing interest in you and if you follow those steps you'll be fine. The only thing is that sometimes the only way you know he's around is that you'll see a big black shadow on your Fish Finder, other than that you won't know he's there. Who knows how many times they've been around and I just didn't know about it... It's actually a good thing... lol.

It's really a choice between sitting inside (water and balance issues) versus sitting on top. My choice came down to a dedicated fishing platform with ample stowage space for camping gear, safety equipment, batteries, bait, etc. I also do lots of surf launching and I needed a platform with scuppers. After the wave has broken over me it takes a few seconds for my deck and seating area to be free of water and it's not long before I'm paddling 'high and dry'. It's also great when it comes to stability when fighting an oversize fish, there's no risk of tipping with all the 'Johnnies' in the water... lol.

Re: kayakers? - 06/29/11 05:19 PM

Great detail on sharing your experience. I suspect its very exciting living in that part of the world and heading out into the surf. My only problem is not seeing what is lurking below me. I was stationed on the island of Okinawa back in the the early 80's and did a fare amount of snorkeling and never really put much thought into sharks until one year they yanked out a GW from Ishikawa bay. It would seem this giant predator had strayed off course. Great pictures and if you have more please share. I'm heading up to Northern NY for a canoe trip with my daughter. I will be doing some trout fishing while canoeing.

I have two SeaEagle 385 Pro's. They are inflatables and we take them out to the local lakes. They are two seaters and quite fun. My dad and I each take a kid. My kids paddle for about 42 seconds and then we paddle the rest of the way. Great fun though.

Re: kayakers? - 06/30/11 08:42 AM

At the moment I’m working in Iraq so my fishing is limited to when I’m on R&R. Of course it’s always a fight between the wife and the fish… lol. The worst part of all is I’m only home for 21 days at a time so the time constraints are fierce to say the least. In the meantime my Kayak is up & out of the way. I have a four berth Kayak trailer but it’s impractical to leave my rig outside while I’m over here.

Here’s a few more pics for you guys…

[Linked Image from i53.tinypic.com]

I’ve done all the rigging & installation myself, each R&R I do a little more.

[Linked Image from i55.tinypic.com]

[Linked Image from i51.tinypic.com]

The separate dry hatch on this Kayak is brilliant, allowing for ample storage of camping gear, safety equipment, survival gear, rods, fish, etc. It really makes a massive difference when launching and landing through the surf.

[Linked Image from i56.tinypic.com]

My last R&R I fished the Mangrove Swamps a few miles paddle from where I launch. The only hassle is that you constantly have to keep your eyes open for Croc’s & Hippo’s but the fishing is excellent. Not to mention it’s literally always an adventure.

Re: kayakers? - 07/18/11 07:42 AM

@ MonekyBomb... There's a few basic differences but besides their jaw shape, their size and colour - Alligators are almost friendly. They'll move off if disturbed whereas Crocodiles are definitely not friendly, they'll attack you if you get too close and are extremely aggresive.

Here's a photograph taken at a local Game Park/Reserve of a Crocodile carrying a full grown Warthog in it's jaws. Just by looking at how much of the road this guy covers it gives a good idea of his size.

That looks very much the same as our river country in Northern Territory Australia?

They take the tourists out on open boats for croc feeding. The problem is that there are so many up there now they are feeding on a lot of the tourists.

They wait on the small aluminum boats with fishermen, fishing for Barramundi and just pluck them out of the boats.
