Hikes and Pics - 04/08/11 02:02 PM

Looking through my photobucket album found some pics of an overnight hike I did thought the Yard might enjoy:

Lake I was hiking around

A safer part of the trail. It got more dangerous...

Loaded up.

You can see how narrow the path is here

I was in quite a lot of fear about icicles dropping on me and killing me!

Looking off the edge - probably 50-70ft feet drop

Tent for the night

Drying my clothes on a hap hazard line - I was dog tired at this point but knew I had to dry my clothes and eat:

Gnocchi with homemade dried pasta sauce

The next day I found this sign!
It reads
"Walking path closed due to avalanche risk and falling stone risk"

Time to head back - originally had planned two nights but if it was set to get worse well...quit when you are ahead!

I will post further adventures in this thread

Thank you for the Pics LR. I sure would have had the pucker factor going if It was me hiking that trail. IN THE WINTER! This OLD man is to comfort minded for that! Now if a Helo could have flown me in, to a nice pre-warmed cabin, YooHoo!

Very cool. Nothing like camping in snow to get the juices flowing. Nice pics.

Re: Hikes and Pics - 04/21/11 02:58 AM

Once when we were hiking in Switzerland there was a sign that said something like "you'll be killed by the rushing water" but my French is pretty bad. On top there was a metal ball. We hiked past it and on the way down it started to rain, the ball on top started blinking with red lights, I figured that was a bad sign and we hightailed it out of there.

You are a braver man than I

Re: Hikes and Pics - 04/21/11 12:05 PM

Aimless - yeah good thing you did. Some of those steams are near dam run offs and they will release the water with very little warning! You have signs warning about it at least!

Re: Hikes and Pics - 04/22/11 05:53 AM

Yeah we were in Val D'herens so one time we were downstream from that giant dam. I had to have a talk with my wife about that when she went across one of the streams when there was no need to, although the lights were not going. The one we did have to cross was far above the dam though so I assume it was potential run off from rain since we were towards the top of a snow covered mountain and the warning went off when it started to rain.

We ran across some impressive cattle too. One path took us through a farmer's field and the cattle were some breed I had never seen before with long horns that extended to each side. I worked around cattle plenty as a kid, but just holsteins and herefords, nothing like these beasties. They didn't give us a problem but I kind of wondered whether I took a risk I wasn't aware of there.

We did get charged by a ewe when my wife accidentally came between a ewe and her lamb. She did back down before I got to find out what happens when an american tourist murders a swiss farm animal (I assume nothing good!) but my wife actually jumped behind my back when the ewe started fake charging me. Kind of funny for all the time we have spent in bear country we almost got taken out by a sheep.

A day hike today. Beautiful weather but the snow line is quite low and my companion wasn't up for going quite that high yet!

Instead a walk through smaller foothills!

Very nice trail, I like what i'm seeing. I need to get out and do more camping and hiking. I use to live in Colorado. A buddy and my self would do one 14000 ft. peak every New Years. These pics take me back to those times. Maaaannnn, I miss Colorado. Thanks for sharing.

Awesome pics man! I lived in Germany when I was a kid and we went to the Alps: Germany, Austria and Switzerland, but never off the beaten path. Very nice.
