Whats in your FIRST AID kits? and other First Aid

Whats in your FIRST AID kits? and other First Aid - 05/17/11 05:05 AM

I currently have basic consumer first aid kits in my BOB and vehicle. I'm starting to fill in the gaps in my survival gear and my first aid kits are rather lacking.

I know theres some discussion on this in the BOB thread started by architecht. I'll quote his blurb on first aid in the next post.

1. Did you build your own from scratch? or start with a premade and suppliment?
1a. if you started with premade, which one?

2. what's in your kits?

3. Does your vehicle/home first aid kit vary from your BOB kit or GH bag? How and Why?

4. Where do you buy your first aid gear from?

FIRST AID

Its amazing how fast something can get infected while in the bush! If you don't have First Aid Training - sign up at your local Red Cross this week. I currently have five certifications, and am always looking for something else to add.

Here are the basics of your TRAUMA KIT. This isn't an off the shelf boo-boo kit that goes in your ruck. This is on the outside of your ruck or preferrably on your belt order:

1) HEMOSTATIC!

You have to stop bleeding. Blood loss will result in shock and death. DO NOT BUY THE GRANULATED PRODUCTS! They are difficult to remove from a wound. I like QuikClot's "Combat Sponge".

2) TQ!

The tourniquet will save your life. Have at least one, but two is better. The best made is the C.A.T. (Combat Application Tourinuuet).

3) CHEST SEAL!

Buy an Asherman, and research how to use it. Do not buy a Hyfin.

4) CRAVAT!

This is a simple, but affective item to have.

5) IZZY BANDAGE!

Select one that is large enough to wrap around YOUR chest. The Isreali is a compression bandage.

6) H&H COMPRESSED GAUZE!

Two should suffice.

7) GAUZE!

I like 4x4's because they're big enough to get the job done. Keep them in ziplock bags (in their original packaging).

8) NASAL!

The naso-pharyngeal airway tube gets inserted through the nose and into the throat when a person can't breath through their mouth due to an injury. It can be used on throat injuries too. YOU NEED LUBE to get these inserted. Tape a packet of surgical lube to the Naso packaging.

9) DECOMP NEEDLE!

The ARS DN is a chest decompression needle. I am not trained on one so I do not include them. If your training includes them - add it. OTHERWISE DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE ONE OF THESE!

10) SALINE!

Add a couple of ampules of saline for eye washes.

11) GLOVES!

You need to avoid blood borne pathogens!

12) CLEAN & PROTECT!

Packets of BURN CREAM, ALCOHOL PADS, IODINE PADS, etc. Anti-bacterial First Aid Cream is critical for field cuts.

13) MEDS!

I keep Cipro in my kit for heavy infections. There is also NSAIDs, Aspirin (heart attack), Antihistamines, Lopermide (anti-diarrhea), etc. If you require a prescription - keep some in your kit! I also keep a couple of sting relief pads.

FIRST AID NOTE OF CAUTION: I maintain Red Cross Community First Aid, First Aid, Blood Borne Pathogen, and advanced (outside vendor) trauma training. I also have a very good friend who is an EMT (14 years) and Professional Firefighter (11 years) who has helped my training. YOU MUST SEEK PROFESSIONAL TRAINING! DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE MEDICAL DEVICES AND TECHNIQUES BEYOND YOUR LEVEL OF TRAINING!

I'm still workking on mine. Seems like I am always changing it. Right now it is in an otterbox about 8x4 1/2x1 1/2. Gause, bandaids, antibiotic ointment, burn jel, aspirin/anti inflammatory razor knife, forceps OTC allergy meds, rubber gloves, alcohol wipes, betadine wipes, tape, ace wrap, medical scissors and a few other normal kit odds and ends. I keep changing it around from a soft bag to the otterbox and back. I'll get it the way I want one of these days.

Re: Whats in your FIRST AID kits? and other First Aid - 05/17/11 06:22 AM

Depending on the kit and where it is being carried. I have had a premade kit in the past but soon figured out that I tend to use some things more than others. These days I make my own for the simple fact that I use what I know. The thing to remember is that you need to keep things in it that will keep YOU going if needed. Don't forget the meds and some superglue--I know, but I have used it before to get by.

Best price on components I have found is in the Masune catalog

You buy the kit refill and put the contents in your own pack. Several kits have refills available.

These look pretty good as far as premade kits. I am looking at a couple different ones and then adding my own self made kit to it.

Nooo, I threw some stuff in my cart and mock-checked out. They charge $9.95 shipping, and CA sales tax.

Re: Whats in your FIRST AID kits? and other First Aid - 06/14/11 06:45 AM

Success! I found my tourniquet today! Ok it's an old cotton belt that belonged to my stepson. It is about an inch and a half wide and the "buckle" is two square "rings" you pass the belt through both rings and then back through over the top ring and under the bottom one and pull. simple as that. Now all I gotta do is get some material or a piece of leather I have sewn onto the belt so the "Buckles" won't cut into your flesh as you pull it tight. I think it will work. May try it out, just long enough to cause the "feeling" to go away.

Re: Whats in your FIRST AID kits? and other First Aid - 06/14/11 05:23 PM

I have narrowed my BOB and first aid kit to a good knife, duct tape and super glue!

Not really, but I have all that in my first aid kit.
Posted By: SkunkHunter

Re: Whats in your FIRST AID kits? and other First Aid - 06/14/11 06:02 PM

A lot of folks are surprised that superglue can be used in place of sutures, sometimes. I was too until we got our little dog and she had to be spayed before they would let us get her.

JJ, are you on the move yet?

Re: Whats in your FIRST AID kits? and other First Aid - 06/14/11 07:43 PM

Duct Tape...Check.

Super Glue...Check.

Bottle of Jack...Double Check!

That's all you need to fix anything!! And no joke, that's all I carry. Lite and simple fix-me-up kit.

Superglue does a great job holding a tooth in too. Don't ask, but take my word for it.

I have this notion that super glue was developed for in-field wound closure.

I have several, the main one I keep in the car. I like pre-made kits that I modify and add stuff too, and I like bigger cases which you can buy anywhere and are pretty inexpensive, then fill em up!

one cool thing I like in my kits is a SAK (swiss army knife) and a new bic lighter and water-proof paper and writing stuff.

my gawd you can spend a lot filling them kits up! doh

The more that I've learned about natural remedies from local plants, the less junk I've needed in my hiking / camping first aid kit. I've got my hiking kit cut down to the bare minimum (gauze, tape, dermabond & a few things that are just plain hard to brew up in the wild like allergy meds & antibiotics) while my vehicle kit still looks like a small hospital, as does my home kit.

Re: Whats in your FIRST AID kits? and other First Aid - 12/08/11 03:40 PM

Not really a first aid item, but...

Repair kit for glasses wearers.
Tonight I lost a screw that holds the frame together, thereby letting the lens fall out! Tape WILL work, but makes you look like a Geek that should be wearing a pocket protector. Yeah yeah, I've been there.

By having this small kit in your FAK or IFAK, you will always have it readily available if you should need it. I'm going to add one to my kit.

Was rummaging around (OK, Pilfering, as Patty calls it) in my gear container and buried in one of the packs I found my Military issue FAK, still in their vacuum sealed packages! One package is your everyday Boo boo kit. The other is a more comprehensive kit. It has scissors, bandages, nasal tube (forget the name of it) and lube, and an assortment of items for MUCH more than an ordinary minor first aid problem. I SHOULD bre able to just read the label of what is inside and duplicate it. THAT will give me my First Aid Kits! Oh I am sure I will supplement it and all and later on I will list in this thread what it includes, just for more ideas for us all.

To think that our Individual First Aid Kit in VietNam consisted of a single thick gauze bandage with three feet long ties, kind of like a Kotex with ties. They were to be used in the event of serious gunshot or related wounds.

Lube (for nasal ... hard to get in dry)
ACE bandage
Duct or 90mph tape (wrap it on a business card)
Germ-X wipes or a small bottle of sanitizer
(1 additional) CAT
(small) Israeli bandage
(1 or 2) H&H compressed gauze
Aspirin (heart attack)
Benadryl (allergic reaction)
Loperamide (diarrhea)

The Survival Medicine Handbook: A Guide for When Help is Not on the Way by Joseph Alton

Re: Whats in your FIRST AID kits? and other First Aid - 05/27/20 10:59 PM

One Item the I have never seen listed in any FAK is a Styptic pencil. Yeah you know, the white kinda hard looking burns like crazy on a cut thingy. For you younger folks (and Ray, the poor soul) it is what USED to be in about every household. When you would cut yourself you would just slightly wet the end of the "Pencil" and then rub it all over the cut and the bleeding would be stopped. I had to use mine once again when I scratched myself pretty good and it would just "seep" blood.

Once again for all you younger folks (and Ray, seeing as how he has never cut himself shaving) this what it is.

The main ingredient in a styptic pencil is anhydrous aluminum sulfate; an agent that restricts blood flow, allowing a cut to close quickly.

Re: Whats in your FIRST AID kits? and other First Aid - 05/28/20 01:09 AM

They are probably most often used after getting a nick while shaving, or at least they used to be used for that purpose.

Re: Whats in your FIRST AID kits? and other First Aid - 05/28/20 01:32 AM

Yup you are correct Tom. But they also work for scraps and scratches as well. Still burns like fire though. For some reason I bleed a lot easier than I used to and don't clot as fast.
Posted By: Ray Settanta

Re: Whats in your FIRST AID kits? and other First Aid - 05/28/20 01:34 AM

Hey Randy, what do you use on a turnip after you’ve squeezed the blood out of it. Oh wait, it shouldn’t bleed anymore after you get done with it.

I have checked Walmart, CVS, Another WELL STOCKED Pharmacy plus a second Walmart store AND Sams Club. Can't find a Styptic pencil anywhere. I have one here a the house I got a few years ago at Wally World but they don't have them any more. I would like to have one for each Med kit I am building back up. Oh well I can probably find them on Amazon. I gotta get some things there anyway so what's another.

Got my ORCA Tactical Gear FAK yesterday and boy do I like it. It is bigger than either one of my Military issue bags with more elastic and pockets inside and upon initial look see, I really like it. I think it will handle everything I need to put in it and I will probably get at lest one more. Oh and the one I got is this one.

And here is another take on an FAK. Just wait for the commercial to end, it's only a few seconds long.

Re: Whats in your FIRST AID kits? and other First Aid - 06/07/20 01:27 PM

Oh, I FINALLY found some styptic pencils (2) at target. Didn't see any then one of the pharmacy workers came by and asked if I needed anything. I told him what I was looking for and he said they didn't carry them anymore, but thought they had some behind the counter. He looked and they did have in an old bag. He gave them to me, Woo Hoo!

Now I am ready to finally put my kit together, but I still need to order a couple "Specialty" Items and It will have the recommended items in it. THEN I can (once I am satisfied) start building another.

Re: Whats in your FIRST AID kits? and other First Aid - 06/08/20 08:31 PM

Boy I really like that Orca FAK bag I bought. it holds a ton of stuff and I could still cram some more into it!

OK, I have (I think)

6 4x4 pads
6 3x2 pads
10 2x2 pads
12 Butterfly band aids
6 3x4 band aids
6 3/4x3 inch band aids
1 roll of that stick to itself stretch bandage material
1 roll of surgical tape, that kind that really sticks
1 pair EMT scissors
1 pair plastic "Hemostats"
1 roll 3.75x 30 inches wire mesh splint
2 Ace bandages (the kind that you don't need the little clips)
2 Styptic pencils (1 will be going in my next kit)
1 sharpie
1 small bottle Zofran
1 small bottle Benadryl
20 "Baby Aspirin"
1 card of 10 anti diarrhea pills
1 card of 12 sinus/headache pills
1 "Dental" repair kit for lost fillings or holes
12 alcohol prep pads (about 1x1 inch)
2 Iodine prep pads (all I had)
8 pair rubber gloves (they came in an 8 pack bag
1 C-A-T tourniquet
1 tube "Chapstick"
1 tube Triple Acting Antibiotic gel
1 tube burn cream

I am sure I am forgetting at least a couple things. Everything did fit in the bag. Yes it did not easily zip shut, but it really wasn't that difficult to get closed either, it surprised me

I still have a few things to add and I am sure I will be removing the AMOUNT of some items I have, but it is an ongoing thing. BUT I feel as If I have a really good start. What say you Dogs?

Re: Whats in your FIRST AID kits? and other First Aid - 06/09/20 04:53 PM

Looks good but I see no super glue, Ranger candy or surgical instruments. You may want to increase your supply of pads and bandaids.

Re: Whats in your FIRST AID kits? and other First Aid - 06/09/20 10:23 PM

Forgot about the superglue, Thanks Ray. I have heard of Ranger candy but can't remember what it is? Surgical instruments I am not sure about, not trained in their use. Can you explain?
Posted By: Ray Settanta

Re: Whats in your FIRST AID kits? and other First Aid - 06/10/20 07:03 PM

Ranger candy is Motrin 800 mg or Ibuprofen. I understand that some people should not take it. My doctor says I can only take Tylenol and no Ibuprofen. A basic surgical kit would allow the performance of fairly common procedures such as a tracheostomy to allow a person to breathe if there is an airway obstruction, correcting ingrown toenails, stitching wounds and other simple procedures. The other use would be for brain surgery but that is something that would be useless for rednecks.

No, but brain surgery is not practical. You would need an extraordinarily large magnifying glass that wouldn’t fit in a backpack.

Posted By: MonkeyBomb

Re: Whats in your FIRST AID kits? and other First Aid - 07/01/21 03:53 PM

IMHO Gauze is better. Qucikclot gauze works well in spots that you can't get a tourniquet. Like a groin injury that's a bad bleed /deep cut. Z pack is even better since in those areas you usually have to pack the wound. Plus gauze is easier for the Dr's to clean out than the granules.

Superglue is all you need 80% of the time smile the other 20 you need a doctor..

This is a great thread ill have to go over mine later and report back i usualy pack a smaller booboo kit as theyre often called too. Not for everyone but i always have some ibuprofin, aspirine and tylenol, TUMS, stimulants like caffeine of ephedrine, super glue, some bandaids etc, paracord , scissors and a foil blanket. Plus a little mens grooming multi tool about the size of a leatherman micra with nail clippers etc.
