This definitly qualifies for winter survival <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
When you have less than 8 hours of daylight and it is -30 you tend to spend a lot of time indoors. I am really cheap and hate to spend money on things that are not knives and things that lose their value. But I have finally decided to bite the bullet and retire my 21 inch ,100$ RCA and get a decent TV. I am leaning towards a projector as we can write if off as my work often involves doing power point and I had borrowed a buddys and loved it.

I would say about half the TV I watch is on my computer ,usually downloaded with U-Torrent. I already have a excellent HP laptop with the full media centre and a slightly older AMD PC with a very good open source version. The CCCP bundle is so good I use it on the HP instead of the Windows one. I also have an old but quite nice and powerful home theatre amp. It is so old it has Dolby pro logic and Laser disk outputs but it also has tons of S-Video and RCA jacks so can still use it.

I am not going to bother with HD. Just a good quality projector or LCD.
I would love some suggestions and advice as well as hearing what you all have.

I jury rigged a surround sound from a bunch of decent car stereo speakers and the amp. So really all I HVE to get is a TV/Projector and possibly a video card.

So what should I get? am I right about my amp and computer being enough? the car stereo speakers and Pioneer VSX-D901S actually sound pretty good. I wired it so the speakers are getting the proper 4 ohm juice not the 8 that come out of home systems. The wiring looks insane though and we can never have pets.

Help me please!

I was waiting for everyones response as well. I have a nice tv, I am just lacking the sound system. The Bose systems look nice but they are pricy. I can't believe they are as much better as the cost difference would suggest.

I have a 42inch Plasma but if I had it to do again I would go LCD, last alot longer and great quality.
As for the surround sound I use the Energy take five system it outpreforms Bose by a mile and costs alot less, ( had mine for 8 years now) and you need a good prossesor Kenwood or whatever you can get for 3-500.00 ucks can get you a good one .
You wil be amazed with the movie theater feel you get, make sure to get a good sub as well, it makes it all come together.
Hope that helps a little,
I would say for 1500.00 bones you can set yourself up pretty good with entry level LCD tv, surround sound and a amp.

Thanks guys. I do have that old but very good pioneer amp and a 12 inch Phoenix Gold amp from my truck. I used to be really into car stereos so I know what I am doing with the speakers and my jury rigged surround sound works really good.
In order to get around having an unpowered sub I used both sub outs, ran it through something(I forget what it's called)that gets rid of all the highs and mids and to the sub. It actually pounds pretty good. I do still need a good centre speaker. I think a good centre is at least as important as the sub because that is what all the voices and really most of the movie is coming from. I have my gear in the master bedroom which is pretty small so the fact that the car speakers are designed for smaller spaces works well.

All I really need is the projector and a first rate video card for my PC.

Maybe an LCD or even a rear projector TV instead depending on what deals are out there. I like how you can use as projector in both a small or large room though.
