I'm thinking about a North Face Trilithium Triclimate Jacket. Its a 3 in 1. meaning I can keep both on when its real cold, and I can just keep the shell on during the day around the camp.

This winter is getting real cold early...gonna be a cold one

I've never used anything to fancy, but to me layers are important and when it gets really cold layers are a must. I'd rather wear a sweater and a couple of decent jackets than one good coat.

Wool ,wool and more wool! Natural materials are best but a nice shell is awesome.
Layering is very important it is already [censored] cold here in Saskatchewan.
A silk preferaby or poly underlayer then wool ,then goretex and a shell on top are the most popular but down parkas are also popular.

Whether you use layers or a good parka should depend on what you are doing. If you are spending a lot of time outdoors layers are best but if you live somewhere where it is -50 for months on end and spend your time going from a very warm indoors to very cold outdoors a nice parka you can easily remove and put on is much better. Nothing sucks more than going from freezing to boiling.

I have a Loki hoody on order that has mitts and a face mask built in so i don't have to carry touque and gloves everywhere.

The touque is a must have for cold weather and it should be wool ,not acrylic or other crap synthetics.

The 3-in-1 jackets tend to have a cold spot down the zipper because the inner layer is spaced away from the zipper on both sides. Its just as easy(or a lot easier I think) to just have 2 separate pieces. that way you don't have to mess with zipping them together or taking them apart. I work in an open air environment at night, just a roof, so in the winters it gets pretty cold after being out there all night. When it is cold enough to wear full gear, I usually wear a summer performance-drying shirt against my skin, then something in the range of a sweatshirt over that, then an Arcterx jacket(one of their warmest fleece-type with abrasion pads), then a cheap heavy Columbia shell with the stretch cuffs and hood. I only wear the columbia jacket becuase I found it 80% off and its pretty durable and I wouldn't be that upset if I get grease on it or tear it at work. Any of the shells would be fine, but I definitely prefer to have something that is already wind and waterproof.

Over my legs I wear a base layer, then some pants, then snowboarding pants over that. Its a nice lightweight setup that lets me move pretty freely but still keeps me really warm. They make insulated hiking pants that might have better range of motion but would be pretty similar in performance. My pants make a lot of noise so if that bothers you check and see what it sounds like when they rub together. I walk really fast and people tease me about the *swish*swish*swish*swish* but they always know I'm never far away. That's probably not what you want on the trail.

I don't have any North Face gear but I have a lot of other stuff so if there's anything else you're looking at just throw it out there

The 3 in 1 north face is suppose to connect to each other with snaps not zipper. I don't know if its a better way but from the reviews I've read that seems like the case.

One of the problem with wearing a thick ful sized jacket over here is because there is a huge tempature difference during the day compare to night. Compmor.com have a good selection of jackets on sale. Some at over half the reg. price. That's why I'm thinking about getting one before I actually need it.

Like you guys mention, the key is probably layers. but a shell that is weatherproof is almost a must for any serious winter outdoorsman.

check out sierratradingpost.com too. They have even better deals over there all the time.

If you are going to be moving fast with a lot of weight, that makes a huge difference too becuase you can generate so much heat. The Patagonia R series (R2 I think) is similar to fleece, but like fine fur. Its really warm when you are still or have a windproof layer over it, but it lets the air right through when you are moving. It has a really wide comfort range.

I went and look at the Trilithium Triclimate Jacket. Very well made! It looks like it can probably take some beating too. Not as warm as 550 fill goose down. But then again nothing is, warmest jacket will probably be a 900 fill down. I mean people go up Mt. Fuji on that thing

My friend went and check out the 550 fill greenland jacket which is very warm. Definitely a winter jacket.

I think pretty much all the well known brand make good jackets. The key is to buy last year's model and save 50%

If you like, you might want to check out the Columbia Bugaboo. It's a great two jacket system.

Fleece Mid Layer, similar to the NF Denali Jackets. Outer Layer, water proof jacket.

I'll see if I can get pic of mine up sometime tomorrow.

The Columbia Bugaboo is just like the Trilithium Triclimate Jacket, 3 in 1 system with an outter shell that is weatherproof. it comes down to which one is cheaper/on sale.

I had a bugaboo in college. plenty good enough with a 19 yo metabolism. At our age, you'll notice the cold at the zipper if you have them zipped into each other. Its not nearly as bad if you zip them into themselves like 2 separate jackets. The snaps at the end of the shell sleeves are a little annoying though.

The 3 in 1s that come with a somewhat thin inter layer ain't really meant to be use in extreme cold weather. Some 3 in 1s do come with 600+ fill down inter jacket tho. Now those are good for some serious cold.

I was surfing different brands of jackets and some of them are fill with 800+ down... NOW THAT IS MT. FUJI READY.
