A little 711 let down :(

A little 711 let down :( - 01/20/12 06:40 PM

While viewing some camparrison pics of the 711 and a Camp Tramp on another thread , I saw a couple of measurment photos showing the blade widths . This brought something to my attention that I'm not very happy with on the 711 (as I have one on the way too) . The blade width measurment clearly shows the Camp Tramp at 1 3/4" wide and the 711 at 1 9/16 wide . But on the Scrap Yard site it clearly states the blade width as 1 3/4" and that's one of the reasons I bought the knife . My Busse basic 6 is a little over 1 9/16 wide and I "thought" the 711 would be bigger . I'm pretty dissapointed about this . NOT that this means the knife is any less great and I'm sure it will be one of the most loved Scrap Yard knives . But if it has the same blade width and only 7/8 longer blade it's more similar to my Basic 6 than I had hoped and expected .

Well Mike, I haven't received my 7-11's yet either, but don't jump the gun on the knife. If it's like the prototype I handled at Blade then you should be happy.

Oh I don't expect to be dissapointed in the knife at all . I'm very sure it will be a great knife as Dan and his crew do excellent work and the knife is (I think) a great size . I just feel a little misled on the specs , leading me to buy a knife thats so close to the one I already have . On the site the blade thickness is stated as "Approx 1/4" so if it turns out to be .220 as my basic is , it's no supprise . But the blade width doesn't say "Approx" it says 1 3/4" and 1 9/16 is a considerable difference .

Re: A little 711 let down :( - 01/20/12 07:15 PM

One of the things that I liked about the prototype was the blade shape's point. I always felt that the Camp Tramp had a "bull nose" shape, i.e. not "pointy" enough. I like to be able to pierce objects without making a big cut in the material.

If you're not 100% happy with your Scrap Yard knife then just send it back, no problem.

Re: A little 711 let down :( - 01/20/12 07:40 PM

It was an Ar15, sort of. Seems they kinda modified it a mite. They set it up to accept a conventional scope, a night sight scope, a suppressor and oh yeah, they rechambered it for .458 socom!

One guy was there and I a sure he had a knife, for "Just in Case"!

Oh and there is a guy in Bristol Tennessee the books Hog Hunts with a knife!

I was real tempted to go in for a 711, but then decided since I have a SOD I don't really need the 711 as I still have another two blades in that size range besides the SOD. I will probably regret it though, but it wouldn't be the first time or the last.

I hate it when I get a thought flashing through my head and start posting forgetting what thread I am in and getting completely off track. Sorry Guys.

Thanks for all the input skunk . That really cleared things up for me .

I know what you mean about not wanting more than one knife with nearly identical dimensions, I'm the same way. I don't consider myself a collector, but my collection always seems to keep growing. The other night I began putting a "trim the fat" list together. Time to raise some gun funds.

Hey, maybe think about selling your Basic 6 and keeping the 711. You'd have a good amount of money left over. Just a thought.

Re: A little 711 let down :( - 01/20/12 08:47 PM

Well , along with the knife I had ordered a sheath for a Scrapper 6 (which I suspect will fit my Basic 6) and a couple of T-shirts all to be packaged together (for a bit of postage savings) . I have also already got a sheath here that I bought for the 711 on that auction site , that will now not fit it properly either . I will buy the kinfe just the same and who knows , I MAY end up selling off my Basic 6 and keeping it , or keeping both . More than anything it's just a real buzz kill to now realize that I'm not getting what I thought I was .

I hope it gets resolved to your liking.

Mike let's see if anyone else got theirs and measures out. Hopefully it's a fluke.

Good luck and for what it's worth, the 711 fits perfect in my kydex camp tramp sheath, no play or looseness.

Take care.

my 711 is 7 1/2 in. along the spine. 1 5/8 wide and 1/4 in. thick. hope this helps.

Re: A little 711 let down :( - 01/20/12 10:31 PM

I have seen as much variation as 1/8 (and maybe a touch more) in a few knives, this might take care of the length part for you, but as far as the height from edge to spine I don't have a clue.

Re: A little 711 let down :( - 01/20/12 11:51 PM

I measured mine today. It is dead on at 7 1/2 inches long, .252 inches thick and 1.609 inches wide.

Mike did a great job of sharpening it. It needs work on the sharpness of the curve to tip but the flat part of the blade is a sharp as any I have ever recieved from the factory.

I am looking forward to getting out and using it to see what it will do for me in the backcountry.

Well , everyone seems to be lovin it . So I'll see what it's like when it gets here . I haven't got any shipping notice yet , but I paid with Paypal , so I don't know if that makes it any different .

Re: A little 711 let down :( - 01/21/12 12:36 AM

My two are 7.5" long x .258" & .262" thick x 1.610" & 1.645" wide. They both increase .015" & .020" towards the belly of the edge. One blade exhibits a higher grind line on the right side. Tough to tell with the coating. Manufacturing tolerances are to be expected at this price to performance ratio. Very happy with these knives, at this price point.

Re: A little 711 let down :( - 01/21/12 03:52 AM

I don't have my SOD anymore but here are some weights from my notes.

SOD 17.2 oz
711 14.3 oz
scrapper 6 12.5 oz
Camp Tramp 14.4 oz

I like the 711. It feels like a pointy Camp Tramp!

Re: A little 711 let down :( - 01/21/12 08:43 AM

While reading some threads posted by those who have already gotten their 711's and looking at the pics they posted of them , I see that the 1 3/4" width spec is not a mistake . It seems to be the grind back on the blade for some reason . Look at the 2 photos below . The first one is the photo of the 711 from the Scrap Yard site and the second photo is one that Azwelke posted of his 711 that he got today . If you look at the choil on both knives you can clearly see that the knife on the Scrap Yard site does have a much wider blade and the photo of Azwelke's knife shows the blade ground down a good 1/8" more .

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff145/Dream_0n_photos/DSCF8301.jpg

I'm not sure why the blades where ground back so far , maybe for edge strength . Anyway , as so many have said , I'm sure the knife will become a classic . I simply expected it to be as depicted on the site and to those specs . As I said earlier on this thread , this only matters to ME because I have another knife close to the same size and thought there would be more difference between the 2 . If not for that I wouldn't care in the least as I know it's a guality knife and at a fair price .

Re: A little 711 let down :( - 01/22/12 06:25 AM

Got the 711 today. I wasn't thinking I would be overly excited to get it since owning a B6 and previously owning a camp tramp but I bought it because it was a lot of knife for the money. I was wrong. I like it a lot more than the camp tramp I sold and maybe more than my B6. It's size and weight and res-c handle are perfect.

Re: A little 711 let down :( - 01/23/12 06:51 AM

I'm not going as far as calling the 711 a let down but the 711 doesn't seem to be as "beefy" as the CT for some reason. I mean they are about the same size overall. Perhaps you are right, the width have a lot to do with it; But until someone do a chop off test we will never know...

Thank you for making me aware of the site discrepancy. The specs for the 711 should have read 1.65" wide and not 1.75" wide. This is clearly a typo from human error and it will be corrected as soon as possible

If you are dissatisfied with the knife, please return it for a refund

The awesomest customer service out there!

Re: A little 711 let down :( - 01/25/12 05:24 AM

I was never worried about Dan and Scrap Yard knives not making it right if I was unhappy with the knife . One of the main reasons I deal with Scrap Yard and Busse is because aside of making what I think are THE best knives out there , the customer service is next to none . I joined this pack of dogs and I'm staying in the Yard

Ooops...wrong place.

Re: A little 711 let down :( - 01/25/12 03:13 PM

Just got my 711 yesterday, and I dig it!
To me, it is at more thought through design than the B6. At least for my hands. The choil is much more accessible. And the thicker blade makes for a much more heavy duty blade.
But agreed, the width is pretty much the same as the B6.

I would find it hard to let go, once I have had it in hand...

Re: A little 711 let down :( - 01/25/12 03:22 PM

I would think that it will work well for you up there in the Scandinavian area. Maybe you could put a birch wood burl handle on it! Now THAT would be unique!

Re: A little 711 let down :( - 01/25/12 09:29 PM

That would look cool. If I had bought a couple, I might have dared to try that.
I hope to get my self a proper house some day in the near future, where I could set up a workshop for those tasks. My apartment is not really geared for that kind of work.
