Price Change For SYKCO 711

Price Change For SYKCO 711 - 02/14/12 11:03 PM

Dogs:

The price of the SYKCO 711 ($119.95) will be increasing by $20.00 to $139.95 on Sunday Feb. 19th at approx. 2:00 pm Eastern.

I had originally calculated the price of the 711 using SR77 steel. I made the decision to offer it in the higher performance and much more expensive SR101 but never adjusted the price accordingly. So, in order to teach myself a valuable lesson, I am giving you an additional 6 days to take advantage of my mistake!

To be clear, All orders placed by Sunday at 2:00 will be honored at $119.95

Thanks! and the performance that you get from the 711 will still be worth every penny of the new price.

Bravo Dan! You COULD have increased the price right now but by giving an extra 6 days you should get a medal.

(Sure you don't want to DECREASE the 311 cost by 20 bucks just to offset the higher price)?

On second thought, don't worry about it. We'll order them anyway, at least I'm going to.

Dan I have an idea ! Put the price up on the 711 by $40 and then knock $20 off the 911 price when you release it

I'll drink to that one with you

Re: Price Change For SYKCO 711 - 02/15/12 05:55 AM

Yet another reason why Dan is THE man, giving a heads-up like this to his biggest supporters. Or then again, is he trying to tempt me into jumping in on a knife offering I had decided to pass on?

However, the most interesting part of this post (to me) was that SR-101 is significantly more expensive than SR-77. Had no idea! Any particular reason why, that you can share with us non-metallurgy hill people?

Makes me glad I dig my SR-101 Waki so much. Finally got over my safe queen phobia the other day and beat on some dead branches with it. (Don't feel bad Dan, I was also under the influence.)

Re: Price Change For SYKCO 711 - 02/15/12 09:52 PM

I agree with you SAR. We are always thanking Dan for his business ethics. HE HAS SOME! That is sort of rare in these cutthroat days.

I personally think Dan gets and keeps his customers as much by his business dealings, actually coming on the forums and talking to us, by admitting his mistakes and STILL giving us time to cash in on his errors as he does by building great knives. I won't hardly look at buying another brand knife any more unless it's a folder. I think Dan's knives are THAT good!

Thanks again Dan!!!

Re: Price Change For SYKCO 711 - 02/19/12 05:37 AM

Dan,

Do you also expect to have to raise the prices of the 311 or 511 since they're also SR101? Or are they pretty locked in at the current price?

Thanks,

Re: Price Change For SYKCO 711 - 02/19/12 05:56 AM

Dan if you are reading this can I ask why you decided to go with SR101 over the SR77 ?

SR101 is one of my very favourite steels but for edge retention not toughness when chopping. For a chopper type knife with a blade upwards of 7" I'd have thought SR77 would be a more obvious choice ?

Re: Price Change For SYKCO 711 - 02/19/12 06:14 AM

Pit,

I was thinking the same thing, I would prefer 77 for a pure chopper. But in this intermediate size I don't really know if it matters so much. Since the 711 seems designed to have less of a chopping profile than say the beefier SOD, SR101 seems like a good choice. For a 911 or larger though I would prefer 77, also to retain a better price to performance ratio.

There have been plenty of excellent mid/larger knives in SR101:

Camp Tramp (SR101-Diff.TempLine) = 14.4 oz; .24" thick; 7.325" blade; 12.5" oal

(SY) 711 (SR101-ThroughHard)..... = 14.6 oz; .25" thick; 7.375" blade; 12.5" oal

Battle Rat (SR101)…………. = 16.5 oz; .24” thick; 9.375” blade; 14.4375” oal

Battle Rat (Satin) (SR101) = 15 oz; .23 thick; 9.375” blade; 14.4375” oal

Battle Guard (SR101)....... = ? oz; .24" thick; 9.375” blade; 14.4375” oal

M9LE (Full Flat - G10) (SR101) = 19.35 oz; .23” thick; 9.125” blade; 14.875” oal

Re: Price Change For SYKCO 711 - 02/19/12 06:56 AM

I agree . I think the SR-101 was the best choise so far for the 11 series because of it's better edge retention . However on the bigger 911 I would like to have the SR-77's toughness as I do not yet own a longer blade knife and I intend to buy the 911 as my chopper .

Re: Price Change For SYKCO 711 - 02/20/12 02:50 AM

If the 9-11 is SR77 I've got no incentive to buy. I've already got the DF in 77. Having a similar blade in 101 would be funtastic!

Re: Price Change For SYKCO 711 - 02/20/12 02:58 AM

Gentlemen (and lurking ladies), I defy anyone to chip the SR101 blades. My Chopweiler has eaten probably more wood than my Dogfather and done so with far less deforming of the edge. When I say "less" I really mean there has been ZZERO deformation of the edge whereas the DF edge has slightly rolled in some spots after some hard abuse. The marginal "toughness" advantage to the SR-77 IMO is more hypothetical than actual in that I seriously doubt any of us will put the blades through the sorts of torture testing that would cause the 101 edge to chip or fail. If hacking through hardened oak, maple, hickory, and other assorted woods and routinely batoning through heavily knotted pine doesn't cause chipping, there ain't nothing I'm gonna ask of this blade that it can't handle. I will probably buy any and all blades Dan decides to make from that magical steel

For what it's worth

Re: Price Change For SYKCO 711 - 02/20/12 03:07 AM

I'll put it this way. SR101 is a superior steel to SR77. It gets sharper and stays sharper longer. Not that there is anything wrong with SR77, but SR101 is even better. I chopped down large trees with my Waki. It's some tough steel. I am not surprised that it costs a bit more. I don't think anyone who buys the new scrappers in SR101 will ever be disappointed. Some of my very favorite knives are Swamp Rats in that steel. My 2 cents.

You miss my point buddy, I admit SR101 is an awesome steel but for a chopper SR77 is very adequate and will lower the cost for those of us who have no more kidneys to sell !
