Re: Hello - 04/16/12 05:16 PM

I did wipe it a bit afterwards...
It was really quick, and only the coating got a bit scratched, no visible impact on blade.
The owners of the cottage didn't leave an axe to do it... But for me it was all the more fun! The wood was well seasoned so with the blade thickness I battoned it a bit in and could hear the wood splitting by itself.

Re: Hello - 04/25/12 05:48 PM

MM
One thing i forgot to mention, and it's a big one is that on a previous hike I used the 7 to cut a live tree for a walking stick. I know live, but it was wet, it was muddy and slippery, the dead one I was using has shattered (I'm not a small man)when I used it to break a nasty slip.
I chopped down a tree, chopped of the branches with the 7 and then used a Ka-Bar large Dozier folder in AUS-8 to finish the ends of the stick and both went back, 7 into the sheath and into the backpack and Dozier into the pocket.
When I got home i took them both out to clean, and 7 has developed some black patina on the bevel, while the Dozier in stainless steel had a bunch of rust spots. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" />
I know stainless is not stain resistant, but SR-101 is supposedly rusting very quickly... So in my experience SR-101: 1, AUS 8A: 0! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

The pond? That's over at the Swamp <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> This is the POUND <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> Sorry n2s, couldn't resist.

Welcome elof! I like what you've done with your blade!

Welcome to the yard Amigo!

Re: Hello - 04/26/12 01:03 PM

Elof, thanks for the information. Don't worry about the tree, it is a renewable resource! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> Seriously, it is more important to safeguard a life than save a sapling. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

Re: Hello - 04/27/12 01:51 AM

And the 7 had to be tested too, so there was a scientific component to my actions.
And she has excelled at the work I threw at her! Makes me even more eager to get a 9 and do some serious chopping...

Re: Hello - 04/27/12 02:00 AM

Thanks for the info about the metal. I was just thinking about how well the sr101 could handle being wet.
Posted By: elof_alv

Re: Hello - 04/29/12 09:09 AM

Well, that was just the edge on a coated blade, and i guess the tree liquids were somewhat different than (un)pure water would. And the exposure was not very long
I will not bow to your curiosity by taking the RMD LE deep sea fishing, she's way too pretty to get all stained and rusty.

Re: Hello - 04/29/12 09:15 AM

agreed

Re: Hello - 04/29/12 09:20 AM

I would just use stainless or titanium (such as the Mission Knives) for saltwater environments. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Re: Hello - 04/29/12 09:32 AM

mission knives???
Posted By: Private Klink

Re: Hello - 04/29/12 09:35 AM

Yes, just Google them or even check on eBay. I have a Mission MPK made of non-magnetic titanium, supposedly favored by many Navy Seals. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
Posted By: elof_alv

Re: Hello - 04/29/12 09:38 AM

I have Benchmade Grip on X15-TN for that. Been in the sea with me on few occasions and no rust problems at all. Also have a Dragonfly in H1, but that is only for small jobs with its size.
S30V wasn't too bad either, just some small surface stains that i cleaned off easily.

Re: Hello - 04/29/12 09:40 AM

The problem I have with Mission knives is that IRC they about 45RC... and titanium is said to be quite a job to sharpen

Whatever works for you! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

Re: Hello - 04/29/12 09:51 AM

And as for the Seals... I've seen 3-4 manufacturers claiming that their knives are preferred by Seals... makes me wander. Would like to hear from a Seal on the matter.

Re: Hello - 04/29/12 10:03 AM

SOG claims their knives are it. but the quality that I have seen from my SOG blades leaves alot to be desired

Re: Hello - 04/29/12 10:15 AM

The SEALs I have worked with carried Gerber tools and Leathermans most of the time. I saw many different fixed blades too. SEALs aren't knife experts or anything.

Re: Hello - 04/29/12 10:33 AM

a good leatherman is a must. the discovery channel had a show about seal team6 on tonight and a exseal had a WAR DOG in a sheath on his hip.
