Sheath Options for Kill Devil

Sheath Options for Kill Devil - 07/18/12 03:40 PM

What are the options you have in selecting a sheath for a Kill Devil Sniper Hawk?
I've came across this option already, but don't care for the snap retention.

Would there be any other options?

I've also seen the type where you slide the handle down through the kydex without any snaps. I'm not really to sure I like this type either. I'm thinking the snap retention sheath just might be the best option as Buy Brown and Mashed Cat are making them this way. If anybody knows anything other than these two types please fill us in.

sumo, is that just a preference or is there a particular reason you would do a leather sheath?

Remove the snap and modify the retention as you like. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

Here's the thing....

I have various kydex sheaths from David, Eric, and Jeff for various big knives and swords. Even though they provide satisfactory retention, I don't carry those off-road upside-down.

Would you carry a Waki or a B(W)M upside down on your belt or the outside of your pack in kydex while tracking a bowshot whitetail through a river bottom oak thicket?

Leather cause I like it. Kydex works but leather is my preference for tradition I guess.

Re: Sheath Options for Kill Devil - 07/22/12 01:51 AM

Hi Everybody,

let me see if I can address the concerns.

The snap on the sheaths I make are a safe guard, that I started/developed on the GG&G battle hawk sheaths that I have made over 6000, yep 6 thousand of. Their hawk is at least twice as heavy as the KD and I have never heard of of or had one of those hawks come out when it was not suppose to.

The hawk will actually stay in the sheath very well with out the strap as I close the bottom of the sheath together at the bottom for retention, something that again I developed with the Battlehawk.

I also place the strap under the head of the hawk on the sheath so that the beard of the hawk will not inadvertently poke out and leave and exposed edge for the user.

I used to make sheaths that would have the hawk drop in from the top. We changed that as the hawks could pop up with running and what not also the soldiers that carried them on their vest would say the popping up would strike them in the jaw. No fun for them.

Hope this helps.

David, I can see where the snap may not be necessary, but I for one would want it, if for nothing else than an option to ensure that the hawk didn't get lost out of the sheath when you're bustin through the brambles.

David, maybe you could replace one of the eyelets on the top part of the sheath with a snap so the strap can be swung up out of the way and fastened so it doesn't flop around, for those that don't want to use it or to store it while it's just laying around camp.
